I guess I wasn't suprised to see there wasn't a thread on this anime. It's very underrated, but I love it.

"Henrietta" was an innocent little girl when her entire family was massacred and she was left for dead. She was rescued by a privately-owned social welfare organization and given cybernetic components over her battered body. Brainwashed by the organization, she and four other girls now work as cold-blooded assassins, doing the dirty work for the Italian government.

Has anyone else come across this anime or the manga? The story is great, the music is awesome. It gives me the chills.

Discuss, please.

I saw the anime quite a while ago... I must say that I wasn't very impressed. First off, there is basically no storyline. The whole series is dedicated to depressing the viewers with the depressing lives the girls have. There are some good parts in the series ofcourse, such as the animation and the soundtrack. The opening theme is very nice. Ending theme sounds great too even though I don't understand a word :heh: . There are plenty of much better anime than this out there though

I, too, agree with Hell_xtremedawg(wow that's one long name!). It was very unmotavated. I literally had to force myself to watch each and every episode of the series 'til I reached the end. And what happens in the end... Was just pointless. I didn't find anything too outstanding in the animation. Sure, it was clean and smooth (oooohhhhh.... casings falling from the shaft of the gun and bouncing off the ground), but nothing that catched the eye. Sound was approprate; a classical approch on the anime with sophisticated government mafias; it suits it well, in my opinion. I watched it once, and then did it the usual honor of rewatching it again, just to catch anything that I might have missed, but, to be honest, I wouldn't watch it again anytime soon.

It entertained me mildly... No more no less. It did attempt to pull out the meaning of living in the abstract plot, but it fails miserably; discontinuing the idea before it could develop.

My final word: Average.

It has now been confirmed that Gunslinger Girl will be having a second season that /should/ fill in the blanks that the first season left; that is, the Pinocchio arc of the manga.

The projected launch date is in the First Quarter of 2008.

Second season seems disappointing. It's nowhere near the caliber of the first season on all different levels.

Technical aspects aside, it completely lost its classy touch. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/ZeroIchigo/emot-smith.gif

agreed with both of you. It is an anime more for those people who a.) love guns b.) love action and c.) like cute loli girls who have cyborg boadies and are trained for killing. It lacks a storyline. I am pretty disappointed with the second story as well. The action isn't as good as the first. The characters do look better but their guns look awful. Henrietta is more feminine and Rico seems to be more childish.

I always hate it when people criticise something I love... Okay, I see your points, to the 3 of you, and you are entitled to your opinion, but I wholeheartedly disagree with you.

Simply put: Best. Anime. Ever.

I live in the UK though, so I haven't seen any of the 2nd series :(

I have the boxset and the first two volumes of the manga. I'm gonna get the rest when I can (I'll buy the last two in french if I can't get them in english by the time I get to them). Yep. I'm obsessed :D :P

I'm sad to hear these disappointing reviews; I saw an episode of it about a year ago(?) and it looked like it might be a pretty deep series. Ah well.

Actually, the first season is a top quality production.

???

Don't know what you mean by iterate, as I don't know the word myself and dictionary.com just says to repeat (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/iterate)... Don't think that fits.

Basically, I want reasons. Anyone can say something is good, but few can explain why it's good.

(Iterate, in this form, means to go through in entirety.)

Ah, ok.

Well basically because it is so moving. When you think about it, the girls really have no idea what is going on, they know it only as fact and not what it means. Or rather, they don't know how they should react to what it means.

It has little storyline, ok, but nonetheless it does a great job of conveying ideas and emotions to the reader/viewer that can't be put into words. It doesn't need a storyline beyond what it already has.

There isn't really much else I can say, that was all it needed for me. I value thought-provoking stuff quite highly...

sorry. meant that the second series was worst than the first one like Zero said. I thought that the first season was ok to watch but it wasn't that great for the same reasons that M listed.

I'm currently watching the first season right now, and it does seem to be grim... I'm not truly satisfied at how they just really jumped right into action as they did in the first episode... and they didn't really do a good job at explain what was going on later on... Though, I too would agree that it is an average anime... I would say this is equivalent to Gundam Seed the second series where it is very depressing and lots of people die and so on and so on... Though, it does give an insight to what it is like through the eyes of a broken assasin.

I thought the first one wasn't too bad at all - technically it was pretty good, but the main part that I thought were interesting was the storyline. Yes, it wasn't exactly a story which progresses in the typical sense - it was more about exploring the sociological/psychological and philosophical/moralistic conflicts that a present because of this curious setting (though one which certainly can be mirrored in some sense in the real world). Of course, it was presented in a somewhat understated manner, but I thought that added to the charm of the piece - any more and it would've been straight up depressing throughout. It was really short, too, so I'm glad they took that route rather than trying to present an epic struggle with what time they had.

That having been said, the second season certainly looks like it took a hit in the production values department, but who knows, it still might deliver storywise (I feel like it might start to move into actual plot development this time). The original creator seems to be quite involved in this production, so it might end up being pretty good...
