i'm trying out for a magnet school in febuary, but i'm not sure how many octaves these scales can be played in on cello:

F major,A major,and Bb major.

it says you have to do all the scales in 2-3 octaves each, but i know for positive that D major and C major can only be played in 2 octaves on cello. any help on this is appreciated.

also,i dunno the fingering for the 2nd octave on the A major scale........can anyone help me on this? :heh: because i almost never reach the high G#,and that is starting to make me mad. <_<

What are you talking about, that C major can only be played up to 2 octaves on the cello?! That's true, but only if you don't switch positions from first.

This is the full cello range; from 2 octaves below middle C to about 2 Octaves above middle C (if you're damn good); So, one could supposedly do 4 octaves for C major; everything else would have to be 2 or 3 octaves unless the player is extremely skilled; then they could possibly go even higher. But that high C is "normal" for proffesionals, apparently.

Again, only if you don't shift positions. You can get up to D with your 4th finger on the A-String in first position; if you shift your 1st finger to D, then you can get D, D#/Eb, E, and F; switch your 1st finger up to the F and you get F, F#/Gb, G, and G#. From there you can keep going up to A, B, C (around an octave above middle C it gets kinda tricky), and then keep going up; the high A is exactly halfway up from the open A string. You can go as high as you want to, as long as you've got some fingerboard under you.

hmm.......i was pretty sure you couldnt go above the high A,but i guess i'll give it a shot. ^^ thanks. :gba: i guess i'll have to make sure to ask questions about the requirments on the tour of the school in a few weeks........

the college that you get into probably has more effect than the high school you get into...

i know that, but my dad always said any better form of education is better. :heh:

oh,and i dont really need help on the fingerings for the high octave scales anymore......i got private lessons and bought a scale book with all the fingerings in it. :heh:

The thing is that you don't really know what's "better" until you've already gone through it. I went to a really small high school with a mediocre academic program, but a really nice community, and enjoyed every minute there. I'm now at a good college, perhaps even better than where I may have ended up had I gone to the really good magnet school in the area.

So, I guess my point is: enjoy high school :heh: You only get to do it once...
