Okay, heres the computer situation I am at. (Note that I am typing on my gaming computer *ahem*spoiled*ahem*.)

My work computer was infected with a virus, and I got rid of it (I believe so, deleting registry keys, programs, etc from the system32 folder. Dont worry, I know wich file I deleted, but for the registry kets, ehh I went with the ones that were very suspicious with no key value.)

Here's the problem. Once I restarted my computer, the taskbar no longer appears, the loading of windows has slown down incredibly, I can no longer drag any files or view any details from the events in the event viewer from the administrative tools. (The reason why I wanted to use the event viewer was because after the virus striked, I saw alot of alerts in the event viewer, but cant click on them to view details.)

To open up windows explorer I had to use task manager since I do not have a taskbar, and etc. I booted in safe mode when I removed the virus, and deleted SVCHOSTS.EXE in system32 folder (known virus, original windows file is SVCHOST.EXE) And also in the task manager I see one instance of SVCHOST.EXE using the cpu of 99%, so I decided that something went terrible wrong with the computer. Either I deleted a registry key that was critical, or the virus screwed my computer up.

Now here's my options;

A) Reinstall my computer from scratch
Find another way

So far I am trying to avoid the A option as much as possible since it contains MANY gigabytes of ANIME, MUSIC, and GAMES (Some of which are terribly rare and cant be replaced and I do not have the CDS for them anymore.) I've used alot of options from B but it all failed. I only have a few tries left before I give up and move to option A.

Now I want to backup all of my anime, games, and music, but remember that I cannot drag files. I cannot set them to share for some reason, yet I might be able to put them on CD (Which I dont know if it will work.)

Can you help me with my situaton? (Remember I am trying to avoid option A, so please help me with opinions, suggestions, and maybe programs that help me with the battle against my errornous computer.)

Specifications:

WINDOWS XP
2.8 GHZ 512 MB RAM
80 GB hard drive
Internet - CABLE.

yah that's a pain.

how many accounts do you have that computer? it may have moved from one user account to another if the cleaning isn't done in safemode.

the registry key that you deleted is pretty important. if you google the file you can download a clean copy of it and put it back/replace in the system32 folder

i had a similar situation a whiles back. maybe some other fellow ichigos will have some more advice

Ichigos is not the place to ask for computer help lol. Get over to the Neowin forums, they'll help you A LOT. www.neowin.net

haha dont know if you noticed hiei but angelic has given some leeway with the rules otherwise he would of deleted that link the moment he found it with a possible ban to the user

Not unless you really need to go to that forum, and for a good reason (My computer problem, as an example.)

Ah, you have a point! But banning is just too harsh.

is your computer still not running? if so:
(1) if drag-n-drop is the only thing not working, try Edit-copy/paste instead (sounds stupid, but if you delete 1 registry key, you may have disabled drag-n-drop, but not copy/paste)
(2) since you have 2 computers (hopefully both have Windows XP), try using Remote Assistance to take control of your dysfunctional computer remotely (MAKE SURE that your clean computer has proper virus protection) and copy the files over that way.
(3) try copy/paste to a new drive using DOS (get an external hard drive, or open up your computer and put in the internal hard drive from your working computer, and MAKE SURE that you do this in safe mode command prompt or boot up from a floppy)
(4) Pay money, get a professional to help you :P

nah, I dont need to pay. I think I can solve the problem, by just removing the hard drive , putting the hard drive into another computer as a SLAVE hard drive, and copy the files from that harddrive, and put it back and reformat so I can just back it up (music, images, that stuff) and there we have it.
