View Full Version : My very first composition

Yesterday I read the tips about composing on the home-page.
I decided to try it myself, as this is the first time I did a composition, it isn't very good, but I'd like to have some tips, so I can get better at composing. :D
Thanks in advance.
(By the way, this file contains a Midi, a PDF file and a MUS file)
Edit: there are some parts in this composition, which just don't sound right, someone I know who has been playing/arranging/composing(?) piano longer than me, is going to help me on this.

You have a pretty good melody (I can't say that it's memorable, but it still makes sense), but your accompaniment is where you lack. I suggest changing things up a bit by not using the same two chords over and over. There is some points where the indirect clash between the melody and accompaniment works well. (as in the 2nd measure), but then there's points where it sounds empty-- like it needs more embellishment. Try experimenting by putting different chords beneath the melody and find something that sounds good. Overall, it's good for a first attempt. ^_^

Ok thanks,
Then I'm going to do something about the chords. :D
Right now I have like loads of C chords, with varying, do you mean taking simply other chords, such as a Bflat chord or, just make the C a C7 or something?

Today I decided to try some other kind of music, I got something what sounded a little bit like rag (I think :P). I hope I varied enough with the chords this time, and sorry about it being so short, I'm still trying new things, so I don't feel like making 5 page sheets and not liking the music style I used at the end.
Comments please, thanks :D.
P.S. I only have a .MUS this time.

Farewell didn't work for me. Windows Media Player said it was an unsupported file type.

I'm working on a new song called 'Pub Piano'.
I made the into so far, any comments on this?
-Does it sound happy enough?
-Is it too slow?
-Are there 'empty spaces' in the music which I should fill in?
Please let the truth be known about my intro, give me comments on everything I could do better, so I can edit it. :D
Thanks in advance. :)
EDIT: I have the downloaded version of Finale NotePad 2005, and I was wondering how I can add more bars... The reason my rag and the 'Farewell' were short was because I didn't know how to add new bars.
Can anyone help me with this? Thanks. ^_^

I can't find anything that looks like an empty bar :(
Do you know what it's called?
And btw, I wanted to do the same intro (with a starting melody) orchestrated, well it isn't orchestrated, but still. :D
Comments?

Heh, going through a rag stage PFK?
I know I'm going through a Nocturne, Etude and Sonata stage/phase.

Sounds like a fun romp, though I'm not too familiar with rag music; the melody so far feels like a plantation hymn, but maybe that was intended. Instrumentation is pretty good so far as well - keep it up and the end result should be quite solid.

Thanks for the comments. :D
I've got more of the melody but I can't think chords right now. :(
It goes like E G-A C (High)G-F E D-C D(<-- 2/4th note)
(Those - mean it are 1/8th notes, the others are 1/4th notes)
I really can't think of chords for the E D-C D part. :(
