my computer restarts itself everytime after 10 minutes into watching a show using VLC media player. Is there any other media player or some sort that can be use instead of VLC to watch Avi files?

Window's Media Player should be able to play all basic AVI files, but if that isn't an option (or doesn't work) you could always go the codec way.

The CCCP (http://cccp.kickassanime.org/download.php) (Combined Community Codec Pack) should salute to most AVI files out there (including MKV, OGM, XVID, H.236(I think that's what it's called), and all Direct Show files). Don't worry so much on the install, everything is pre-configured nicely (unless you want to control how 'this' works 'that' 'when'). Just keep clicking next.

If VLC doesn't work, this would be the next step. It also includes two media players (MPC- Media Player Classic, Zoom Player) to launch the files. I would suggest using MPC over Zoom Player, just because Zoom is a bit bulky and MPC is a little easier (in my opinion) to operate.

If CCCP doesn't do it for you, you'll have to do some hunting.
