Can some one explain what was the hole theme of evangelion and the movies also. Was Shinji Ikari in love with Asuka Langley Sohryu, Rei Ayanami, or Misato Katsuragi? What happened at the end of "End of Evangelion"? Is Shinji and Asuka the only ones alive? Is Asuka in love with Shinji? What is Rei? What is the S2 organ? I could go on and on so just touch up on the ending.

PLEASE I BEG OF YOU TO HELP ME

One of the most horrible and best things Evangelion did was the ending. The last two episodes have the ability to completely destroy whatever you have gained through watching the series, and make it into a phycological warfare. I'll try my best to explain how I interprated things in spoilers. (In no way are these right or wrong. The entire ending of Evangelion can either be extremely straightforward or complex to the point of insanty. I'm merely presenting what I see and feel the series was about) I have not seen Death and Rebirth nor End of Evangelion. I will in the future, but for now I can only base my responses from the series.

A funny thing that I found out about Evangelion was it's title. Neon Genisis Evangelion. Neon Genisis means a new beginning. Evangelion can be translated two different ways. One, being Greek, means the rewards of good tidings; the other, latin, meaing gospel. So the actual English title would be a New Beginning Gospel. Even though that's not the japanese title, the two are very similar in meaning. Just one of those intresting facts.

Oh yeah... Wiki has a good article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evangellion) that explains just about everything. And if they don't they have a link that'll explain it for you.

I'll try my luck at the emotional affects, though.

Was Shinji in love with Asuka, Rei, or Misato?
Intresting situation there.

Asuka: He clearly showed some intrest in the series, but I'm not quite certain if that was his "love". It could be that he was physically attracted to her, but it also could be because he's at that age when men are curious about women.

Rei: this is more of a sibling relationship, I think. Shinji respected Rei because she could be close to his father, while he couldn't. He also seems to be phycologically connected to her. Yet I don't know about being in love.

Misato: Just like she said in the series, she wanted to be Shinji's guardian, and that she was. I don't think of the relationship any more than that.

Now in the series, Shinji was pretty attached to the final angel Kaoru and clearly says that he "loved" him after he killed the Angel. That gave me the affect that Shinji is homosexual and threw everything of kilter. What about all the scenes that he was with Asuka and Rei?! That also presents the situation that he might be Bi-Sexual, but to tell you which one he is in love with.... Is up to you to decide.

Is Asuka in love with Shinji?
Well... Just like above, there are some definate tendencies. While she does love Kaji, she also presents the fact that she's in love with Shinji. Take, for example, the entertainment kiss in one of the last episodes. She showed intrest, yet she immediately withdrew her feelings with a clincher comment. What confuses me is that Asuka shifts between that love and a hate for Shinji (due to his better sync ratios). Can this be a bittersweet realtionship? She constiantly flirts between the two of them (Shinji and Kaji), but Kaji takes the No. 1 position. Whenever his name comes up she feels strongly; love or hate. So I have confidance that she is in love with Kaji, but it's also clear that she knows that love is unrequited. Again, it's really up to the watcher to decided these things. Part of the fun with the series is the fact that it can be taken many different ways.

What is Rei?
There were a couple of references to her being a clone of Shinji's mother (hence why I say there relationship is more of a sibling form). She always gets along with Commander Ikari and has that mental connection with Shinji, so I'm pretty confidant in that statement. The reason why I say she's a clone is the fact that she was always saying that she was expendible. I cannot go any further on this question

The Ending...
Good topic to bring up, because I don't understand it all to well myself. The Human Instrumentality Project's goal was to unite the minds of everyone in the world so that all suffering would end, but an object protects our minds. AT fields exist in every human and is emitted from the brain, creating a barrior between every individual on the planet. The purpose of the project was to disolve that barrior and unite all the minds of the world into one superior being. Don't really ask me what that means, but I think it basically states that every human on the globe somehow become mentally connected to one another and there is no more difference. The reasion why they kept the Lance of Longinus in such spirits was that it could destroy AT fields. That object could bring about the Instrumentality project a little quicker.

I don't understand it that well, but I do know it's very complicated according to many fans. Take your time and formulate your own explnations. Watch, rewatch, and watch it a third time. Do a little research on real things (Like the Dead Sea Scrolls, Tree of Life, the Book of Revelations and Genisis, and try to find the symbolism. Then watch it again. Eventually you'll form some sort of theory from all that.

Clear facts zhood? a tall order with as many conflicting opinions on a lot of Evangelion floating around as there are but I shall also attempt to give some views on it that hopefully will turn out helpfull, & hopefully not just add to the confusion, along with any comments on other views note that some of this will be my opinion after watching it so treat opinions as just that.

That also presents the situation that he might be Bi-Sexual, but to tell you which one he is in love with.... Is up to you to decide. His reaction in the film showed that he at least has interest in girls but overall I'd say Shinji is probably more confused than bi at that point in his life as Kwarou (depending on which spelling you see used, I've seen both quite commonly) could well have been the first person other than his mother to say 'I love you' to him in any way, this could well affect a young mind still forming its sexuality.
As for Asuka well the whole thing did smack heavily of little kids punching each other in the arm to show they like each other really didnt it? the 'incident' at the start of the film may as mentioned above just have been a reaction to the situation but its reveleaed later that he's been thinking of her in 'that' way before so theres definatly lust there at least if not love.
Rei is seen more as a mother/sister figure as shown by Shinjis comment that she'd make a good mother someday based on wringing a cloth like a mother, let snot forget the views her as a little scary & aloof so theres not likely to be much interest going on there.

The reason why I say she's a clone is the fact that she was always saying that she was expendible. I cannot go any further on this questionSpot on a clone of Yui, Shinji's mother, mixed with a bit of Lillith (usefull for control during third impact & instrumentality) they have a room full of spares in the basement at Nerv HQ so you can get one Rei blown up in the morning & have a fresh one by the afternoon (a rather lighthearted look at it there but they get used this way a couple of times) they also form the core of the dummy plug system Nerv develops

The reasion why they kept the Lance of Longinus in such spirits was that it could destroy AT fields. That object could bring about the Instrumentality project a little quicker. That was Seele's goal for it, Gendo however had a differant motive he wanted to be reunited with Yui, unsurprisingly Seele didnt like him hijacking the plan which led to the big fight in End of Evangelion. with all AT fields dissolved mankind falls back into LCL & their souls float up into Lillith's black egg/moon, everyone is part of everyone else basically as mentioned above, though Seele were keen on using unit 1 as an ark for themselves so they werent quite as behind the plan as they'd like most to think it seems. Of course the endings differ a bit between the series & the film & with the manga still ebing made its likely there'll be a third version of it in time. As it stands we have one sad ending & one happy one to put them into clear terms, though which ones which is up to the viewer really, I see the film as the happier one as it contains more hope I feel

Eventually you'll form some sort of theory from all that.Something everyone can agree on there, first time through you'll have opinions which with repeat viewings become solid theories which become the source of lively debates in some places possibly. I'm of the opinion that its probably hard to find two people who have the exact same views on things in the series but thats what makes it entertaining to discuss I suppose. Hope I made sense in there somewhere if not just say.

Addendum: There's a Neon Genesis Evangelion game for the N64. Learn Japanese. Get the game.

Not too sure about the PS2 one, but if you are a loyal acolyte to our cause, your will submit.

The Rei clones compels you . . .

EDIT: The ending of NGE 64 should give you a reason to live.

EDIT EDIT: Or be happy.

The N64 NGE game is the slowest and most boring game I ever played. I'd rather play a 24 hour tetris marathon than to play that game again.

My views:

-Was Shinji Ikari in love with Asuka Langley Sohryu, Rei Ayanami, or Misato Katsuragi?

He's just a kid, and a pervert on top of that. He doesn't love any of them in a true love way, he's just a little perv jacking off on top of Asuka. Come on, we're talking Gainax here people, except for FLCL and Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou I have yet to see something decent of them ;) But seriously, I don't think he's in love with anyone, just hormones and a teenage mind confusing him.

- What happened at the end of "End of Evangelion"?

From what I gather everyone died and returned to nothing and only Shinji and Asuka remain as the new Adam and Eve.

- Is Shinji and Asuka the only ones alive?

See above statement.

- Is Asuka in love with Shinji?

Na, just a teenager who's in heavy doubt about herself and therefor does weird things to prove herself to herself.

- What is Rei?

A monster. Well, she is. Or at least a clone of a monster (Lilith) and Shinji's mum.

- What is the S2 organ?

The N64 NGE game is the slowest and most boring game I ever played. I'd rather play a 24 hour tetris marathon than to play that game again.I've not played the game, only watched the ending. :P This is one funny case of 'the end justifying the means'. Hahaha. Yes, try to get someone to record the ending for you. On the other hand, you just might be one of the 'lucky ones' that might enjoy the arduous process of getting to it. gg hf

Was Shinji Ikari in love with Asuka Langley Sohryu, Rei Ayanami, or Misato Katsuragi? How old were you when you were watching NGE? Were you a boy to boot? Now, if you were Shinji, I daresay that you would 'love' the aforementioned females in one way or another. Embrace your sexuality! Throw off the shackles that the femme-Nazis have emprisoned your masculinity within!

What happened at the end of "End of Evangelion"?
Ignore that and go read some fanfiction instead.

Is Shinji and Asuka the only ones alive?
See above statement.

Is Asuka in love with Shinji?
If you're into that weird Self-Insert thingy, why not? But beware the love of a psychopathic maiden.

What is Rei?
The product of some deranged mind designed to cater to the fantasies of - I'll stop here. Alternative Explanation: Everything and Anything with Blue Hair (Red Eyes not necessary) is a Rei. If you dye your puppy blue, than yes, it is a Rei.

What is the S2 organ?
It's a battery that never runs out of juice.

Disclaimer: If you can't seperate 'fact' from 'fiction', go Google for the NGE Bible if you haven't already.

The N64 NGE game is the slowest and most boring game I ever played. I'd rather play a 24 hour tetris marathon than to play that game again.Did you not go beyond the first one or two angel fights? I'll admit I found the sachiel fight a little offputting at first, till my sync rate went up anyway, now I go back to it to try & get it just as in the episode or at least end it the same way, its gotta be doable as the animations in there. The 5 series fight near the end is rather nice as well. And I just noticed I missed the S2 bit before but thats one of the few things we can have concrete facts on so its well covered anyway, not so well covered is did any Eva's have them to start with but thats another argument entirely.

I completed the game (for whatever reason) and it was slow x_x

Although it did give me a very nice picture of eva-01 to edit, so it was holding a coke bottle. But that on a sidenote

To come back at the "what is Rei" question:

Rei is the Japanese word for zero, so she's a nobody.

Also, Rei's a plod: :rei:

Scary huh?

not 100% sure about this, but I heard a rumor that the creator of Evangelion had gone off his depression medication a few weeks before he scripted the movie (perhaps even during his creation of the series, no one seems to know for sure). If it's true, it would explain some of the massive weirdess that was that movie.

I heard he had a nervous breakdown during the series, hence the lousy ending. End of Evangelion was there to put things straight (and of course to deliver more cash for Gainax)

I've heard that as well. Then again, I've heard a lot of rumors surrounding Hideaki Anno. I heard that he escaped from a mental institution and I've even heard he was a member of Aum Shinrikyou (sp?).
