I think the accompaniment is very nice. The melody has lots of potential, but you haven't quite pulled out all it can be. By the way, D minor is my all-time favorite key.

Yes, it's one of my favorites, except I love raised 7ths on minor keys.

Left hand sounds kinda funky. :\ But once you get used to that, it's a pretty nice piece.

Alright, I love to keep on editing these five unique songs that Koji Konjo composed for a video game. So I am trying to make them as real as possible (as the game's orchestra, which is a MIDI lol) and so it's realistic to play.
So here's my second edition on them.
http://www.supload.com/sound_confirm.php?get=1388907150.wma
EDIT:
Here's what I edited on the songs...
1. Minuet of Forest: I gave the dynamics a little more of a better taste that I had had it before. I made the left hand make the song more of a waltz (which it's really a waltz, not a minuet). Tweaked the ending again. Oh! And almost forgot, raised the key a whole step (CM --> DM).
2. Belero of Fire: Made the left hand come in more like in the real version. Gave the song retards and cresendos/decresendos in it also. Made the "harp run" at the end pop out a little more.
3. Serenade of Water: Didn't change a whole lot with this one. Just when the development comes, I made the left hand a little more sturdy. Again, like the Minuet of Forest, tweaked the ending a little bit.
4. Nocturne of Shadow: Yes!! I have found the correct left hand octaves to use, so it doesn't sound so dissonant (I had the pattern: C - C# - D - C# and now changed it to Bb - B - C - B. That seemed to work out a whole lot better). Also, I made left hand have a cleaner part before the end, and the chord at the end. - Mainly, I change the left hand through the whole piece. And forgot to add, gave it tempo changes (for feeling).
5. Requiem of Spirit: As you can see, I lowered the right hand melody part entirely down one octave. I was listening to it, and seemed the melody was way to high up for it's original, then made it what it was now. I made the left hand pop-out a lot more by giving it more force like how I usually play it, and gave the piece retards and dynamics twoards the end. I hated how I did the ending chord last time, so I changed it a lot more by making the chord base be with G not C-that gave it a more "requiem" feeling to it I think.
A lot, but not a lot I did to these. :heh:

These are huge improvements! I especially like the serenade of water. Yeah, that switch to major at the end of the Requiem does make it sound like a Baroque/early Classical cadence. I can hear the "A-------men," with the "men" switching to major. (I love Requiems because they're so emotionally complicated. Fauré's and Mozart's are excellent examples of that complexity.)

Ok. Just wanted to get these three short songs out of the way. I have been thinking them out for about a couple weeks (not just them alone) and wanted to make them "finished."

Well, since I have been looking into the style of composing like Koji Konjo, this prelude just seemed to sound a lot like his style. Don't worry, it's no rip off, just how it does the minor sound right to a major is the only thing close to it.
Hope you all like it,
http://www.supload.com/sound_confirm.php?get=1034598479.wma
EDIT:
By the way, the part that makes you get this stuck in your head is the ending... you'll see why when you hear it. :P

Alright people. Finally I got a good piece that I've made that's an orchestration. I love how it turned out, and I am not saying how long it took to make either.
Anyway, comments are allowed.
http://www.supload.com/sound_confirm.php?get=59416158.wma
EDIT:
Ok, mainly the feel that I wanted from this piece was..
A ship thats large, and many sailors weathering through a storm in the Atlantic Ocean, near the bottom tip of Africa (Very horrible storm weather near there). Anyway, the voyage kind of would "sound" like this. I made the Timpani sound more like a war drum in this than a normal timpani.
Although the opening theme of the piano has the Polish/Chopin style to it, it was not my "true" intention of it.
Anyway, this is what I thought of, you can make it anything of your own also. :heh:
Kind of sound's RPGish eh? Just thought of that now.
~~~~~
I just notived that when I said in the post for my Egyptian Etude/Prelude, "...it has to stick with a little song, without many melodies..."
Well, that's sort of wrong. One of Debussy's Pieces that's something like Prelude to an Afternoon Faun or something, is around 9 mins. long.
Well, this one's about 5 mins. x_x
Well, this one's from Majora's Mask-like the Song of Time Songs were.
Anyway, simple transposition for such a simple and fun song. :heh:
your ship voyage is good but the part in the middle drags out for too long and made me want to skip the song but I listened to it all... its not RPG-music, atleast in my opinion there are moore stuff going on in such pieces.
its a nice song though believe you can do better, jam some surprises in there.
Hmmm... Like the name is, "Prelude" It's kind of background music in my taste.. almost just made for me listening to it and things.
Also, thanks for the opinion-mainly, this is my "first" orchestration..
for a first it was nice, remember crossing voices always works, if one voice moves up have another go down, its more fun to listen to than everything making a move up or vice versa. (hope im making sense)
hey ive got a request for ya. the windmill song from oracle of seasons (I think). a simple song but one of the best ever writen, do something with that.... please....=)
Milchh
February 15th, 2006, 07:48 pm
Sure, gonna find it on vgmusic and try to figure it out from there. EDIT - Not, there just find a midi or a recording of it, it might be the same song that's on the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Song would also be called "The Song of Storms" - it plays in the windmill place
I dont like the Zelda's for GB. Just the Platforms... other than the Windwaker.. but hey-the music's the same..
EDIT : Yea I know what you mean about voices. I tried to have the Timpani, Strings and Brass as the main "Orchestrak" instruments.. just some of the samples of the Clarinet,Oboe and Flute all sound a little of the same (Well the Clar. and the Fl.)
Kind of a Modern-like Sounding piece, with some of the Classical and Romantic era's into it as well.
Anyway, kind of different style I have developed with the little composition of mine.
Interesting prelude although it is quite repetitive and lacks variety. But the chord progression is colourful but again could use at least a noticable melody/variety to emphasize on the colour. Also, I didn't like how your finished the suspended note -- it was held too long. Not bad. I'd like to see how it develops.
Milchh
February 19th, 2006, 03:54 am
Huh? You DO know what a Prelude is correct? It does not have to have a bunch of themes or has one big melody, either.
I do not know if this is what you 'distinctively' meant, but it is your own liking-as well as my own, which I think is perfect to my taste.
Sepharite
February 19th, 2006, 04:16 am
Indeed. I am familiar with preludes - mostly famous preludes. But famous composers break the rules all the time so, you could say 'no', I am not. :heh:
Listening to your Voyage. The beginning is great but the middle section really dragged on and on... You should have kept that 1:05 craziness for the middle section and afterwards, repeated the beginning theme.
Btw, fo a 14 year old. You have a lot of potential and talent, keep composing!
Milchh
February 19th, 2006, 04:27 am
Hey, thanks for the compliments.. I think. Anyway, my Prelude for Piano & Orchestra wasn't also for a 'performance piece' but more of a 'backgound' music kind of song.
I know others have said that it dragged on, but if you listen to it like while just sitting down to eat or something, or on an MP3 player walking, it doesn't seem to bother as much.
(I have the Ship Voyage on my MP3 player. Hah!)
Sepharite
February 19th, 2006, 04:39 am
You have your own music on your MP3? Do you show it off... or do you actual listen to your music?
Obviously, if you're walking, eating, whatever... you're not paying attention to the music. I don't really call that "listening" to music, just "hearing" music. (If that makes any sense).
Milchh
February 19th, 2006, 01:11 pm
I guess that it's different twoards my perspective. I have some weird music talents that my parts, music teachers, other say and that kind of thing. So for me, it's like I am double tasking. I can always hear the music perfectly, even if I am not pay attention to it-which is almost impossible for me.
Music is my drug.
Hey, some of you may remember my first "Petit Etude" - Meant for a student pianist, that is challenging but quite short - and this is another one that is recently wrote.
I know it ends quite oddly, but I liked how it ended-quick and to the point.
Well, another nice little prelude that I have composed again. It's mainly and 4measure melody that repeats, but is introduced in introduction.
It's called "Morning" just for its meaning. I imagined someone waking up with a nice little sunrise in the morning, and then this music behind it.
Just a little piece. Hope ya' like it.
This is one of my favorite compositions so far. It is called the "Stamina Etude" because it sounds like stamina, and it takes stamina to play it as well.
Anyway, it's preety neat I think, it might be repeditive, but it is a very exciting piece- f I do say so myself
I assume that your comment on my thread was a bit of a hint. ^_~
Anyway, I listened to all of your Z:OoT arrangements. What you've done to them is interesting, but I really think that you should at least keep the melodies and original chord progressions in tact. Yes, that will take away significantly from the creative possibilities, but "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."
Ohh.. I like your Stamina. Very nice chord progressions. The other two aren't as good.
The petit etude's bass didn't quite match the melody at some sections... causing unnessary dissonance.
Morning was cute but a little boring. =/
Alright, this one lays down most of my entire emotion and feeling into this piece. It was a song that I started making a couple months ago, and never got to tweaking it and finishing it either. Well, revised it over the last week and came out with the ending.
Bah! you´re no koji konjo yourself!
I didn't mean for my last comment to sound like an insult, though I do admit that it wasn't exactly constructive criticism. >>; If you PM me, I can scan off the Ocarina transcriptions and let you use them to revise your arrangements. ^^
Anyway... I just listened to the rest of your compositions on this thread, and I have one word: boring. Your melodies are so blatantly elementary that it's almost insulting to the ears of kindergärtners, and your chord progressions are overly predictable and somewhat annoying. Add some color; take a few risks! You're NEVER going to make a truly great composition unless you step out of the bubble of commonplace boredom and into the world of risqué raunchiness! 8D OK... That was random.
That probably doesn't sound like constructive criticism, either, but I really did try! :D
That last song that you posted up was okay but I also think it's alittle too predictable. You should take some risks and try some new things. Not saying your song was bad. There was one part I liked but you seemed to stay in some kind of comfort zone. Get out of it! XD (wierd because I do the same.)
Hm... I wonder if that song would sound better in a minor scale. Do you think?
It has to be preformed by a person with emotion, not a computer.
Think of the song as if you were playng it-if you could.
It has to be preformed by a person with emotion, not a computer.
Think of the song as if you were playng it-if you could.
Ummm... can't you slow down the tempo and maybe use some dynamics, or simply make a song so great it doesn't even need to be played by a person?
In other words, challenge yourself, or like Demonic said, "take some risks and try some new things". ;)
I know you can do it. You have enough musical knowledge for it, now I think you should not just compose with your brain (though of course that doesnt' mean to punch in random notes :heh: ).
Milchh
February 28th, 2006, 12:12 am
Umm.. Marlon, you have not obviously head all of my compositions then. You say to use dynamics and slow the tempo (or rit.) in my songs. Listen to most of them, you can hear the rit. and chromatics.
So mainly, you didn't know what you were saying.
You are right, but I still don't feel it has emotion; I'm just telling you factors that might help.
Please try to stop being as stubborn as you are being right now; the point is, there's still lots of room for improvement, and I'm trying to help you. ^_^
I'm not too fond of that ostinato...then again, only extremely good pianists are able to play impromptus without making them sound annoying (my late piano teacher was one of them), so that may just be a computer-generated problem...
It's a good main theme--simple and somewhat memorable. Its main flaw is that what would be a powerful theme is played with such repetition that it loses its force. With music as much as anything, existence lies in individuality. If you highlight everything, nothing is highlighted.
