Hey, just joined and hoping you could give some feedback on my compositions.
This is an old piece of mine... I think it's alright. :heh:
And as stated: http://www.boyhowdy.org/game/pie.gif
Enjoy!
Btw, there are quite a lot of composers here. I think I'm going to have some fun =D

Are you that dude from Gamingforce by any chance?
Milchh
February 18th, 2006, 11:51 pm
Hmm... No. It seemed very, very random. The Rythum in the backgroud didn't even fit in with the melody.. which wasn't music of a "pleasant" melody.
But just very random, and seemed like no though was put into it either.

February 19th, 2006, 01:26 am
Yup, I'm that dude! =D I'm sorry, I don't recognize you... do you go by another name?
And heh, thanks Maestro for the honesty. Is there any specific area that is random or is it generally the entire piece? And do you have any suggestions on how I could fix it?
Uploaded another one of my oldies.

PS. It's spelled Rhythm ;)

First off, the Honesty compliment was accepted. :P
Second... off, I liked the "Hero's Might" compostition very nicely. Seemed very well organized actually!
Third...... off, Some parts that were random on the "Ending Theme" was everything past the the first part where the piano plays into the song (it's first time the piano solo is introduced) and then that theme really is kind of choppy. The violins seemed to do anything but beauty or life. Just try to work on that part at least. And the ending was a little "too soon." As in, it came unexpectededely.
I don't know how to mainly improve that, but other than to go over it and give it some "flowing" and beautiful or prideful melody that would fit that criteria naturally and lovely-like also.
Yea, I like that Hero's Might piece a lot actually; I'd like to see you write more pieces like Hero's Might. :heh:
EDIT : Tomato, Tomata. Rythum is fine, you know what it means, correct?
Sepharite
February 19th, 2006, 04:26 am
Cools. I'll see what I can do with it. Thanks for the suggestions.
And thanks for liking Might... got me worried there. =P
Another oldie and another weird one when I was bored.
Tomato, Tomata. Rythum is fine, you know what it means, correct?
You know that's not english, correct?

you´ve got some nice stuff going in here...
thanks for the pie!
Milchh
February 19th, 2006, 03:45 pm
Yea, those last two I loved. That second song was kind of Polish/Russian Dissonants in it too. I LOVE DISSONANTS THAT SOUND GOOD!
Sepharite
February 19th, 2006, 05:26 pm
Thanks you two.
I know! I LOVE DISCONNANCE! And I'm glad I made it work... have you heard of Prokofiev? I was trying to promote that composer's character which I think was okay. If you've never heard of him, I'll post an MP3.
Milchh
February 19th, 2006, 06:16 pm
"I never heard of him"
Which is weird, because I heard of a lot of Composers.
Sepharite
February 19th, 2006, 11:52 pm
Really? Never heard of him? I'll post some MP3s a little later.
Here is another old piece... the 2nd/3rd piece I composed, if I can remember.
Milchh
February 20th, 2006, 01:00 am
Heh I like it. It had more of a "feeling" of the melody, than an actual "melody" to the piece.
I liked it. I like how to add your own rhythms in your compositions, which i can tell it is a little trandemark of yours.
Nice job, again.
Sepharite
February 20th, 2006, 01:17 am
Thanks. Man, it was ages when I composed that piece. Probably when I was 14-16, I think. And thanks again..
And currently uploading some Prokofiev for ya.
And here's another one of my oldies/odd one.

I like "Coming of the dragons"! But, please, take out that shrill whistle near the end. I don't think it fits... (Or keep it if you really like it, but it hurts my ears... ;) ).
I like the others, too.
Ending theme, is nice. I don't think it sounds too random, but the volumes of the instruments could be handled better; as it is something that should have been background is too loud (at least I think that may be the problem).
"Heroes Might" is my favourite! It's beautiful! (Is it "Heroes Might" as in "Heroes power", or as in "Heroes might, but I won't" ;) ).
***
Prokofiev. Hmm... Is that the guy who wrote "Peter and the Wolf"?
Dam Dam daDamdiDam daDamdiDam daDamdiDam da Dam (da Dam)

Thanks Dawn, and yeah, that's him =D
Experimenting with strings and flute... and randomly composed this tune. Not done, of course. Requires a lot of tuning in the chords, but how is it so far?

I like this piece. ^_^ Very nice.

Emotions is a nice song though there is some low notes that sound out of place...
Sepharite
February 27th, 2006, 01:36 am
Thanks, I'm thinking of scraping the first half.. seems too random, until the strings are alone.
And yeah, I suck at chord progressions/inversions. I'll see what I can do. Thanks again!
Milchh
February 28th, 2006, 12:18 am
I think it's very good so far actually. I love the off-melody that it has.
Although you say the chords need to be "tuned," it is very interesing how you already have them. Their like a loving dissonant I guess.
Keep goin' with it.
Sepharite
February 28th, 2006, 02:11 am
Off-melody? You mean counter-point? Yeah, I'm trying to strengthen in that area. I'm not very good at bass so I just create another melody under it >.> I'm cheap. Thanks for the comment!
And here's an edited version of it. Changed it here and there... took away some notes. Emphasized on a few places. Hopefully, you can tell the difference and please suggest anything.
PS. About those chords, if you didn't notice... (I'm extremely cheap)... it repeats over and over and over XD

Heh, thanks. It was pretty much an improvisation of Mozart and me slamming my face against the wall. I hope it didn't sound random to you. =S
Yeah, I wonder if I should finish it. Probably not.

Another one of my clownesque pieces. Not even close to done - too tired to think/continue (for tonight) -- tell me if I should continue this experiment. =) Thanks!

April 2nd, 2006, 08:10 am
I really liked the introduction. It seemed to lose force after that though. Maybe if you didn't try to keep it at that intensity the whole time it would work better. I think it would sound great if you dropped into a more quiet melody and then jumped out with those chords. it would also add to the playful/"pissed" clown feel.

April 4th, 2006, 12:24 am
ok...
hmmm
heroes might and emotions.. the second one sounded cleaner..
well i thought it did.. and it didnt feel right..
cause emotions should be all confused...
wait thats just me ?:-P

i love heroes might and emotions.. those struck out to me as great, others good

Yeah, I see what you mean! Except I love making crashing and weird sounding notes. >.<;; But if it'll make it more effective, that tis what I will have to do. Thanks! (If I can only get my Finale dynamics to work)
And
Thanks
Santa...
And added a few bars of notes. Haven't edited anything yet though.
edit: edited a few bars of randomness.

April 13th, 2006, 11:20 pm
Orange Monkeys was longer and much more prgressive. And dont worry about the timpani, they gave you an illusion of it hitting the ground but it was sort of. instant. And the ending should have either a resolve like everything is ok, or have another last thunderstrike. I dont know about the resolve because it sounds like your still in the storm. But cool effects and very emotional with the woodwinds.
Marlon
April 13th, 2006, 11:53 pm
Ooh, can't wait to hear it finished! It's coming along pretty well. :)

April 30th, 2006, 09:35 pm
Boss Theme for a game. That's what that piece is for-well sounds like it'd be in there.
Marlon
April 30th, 2006, 10:57 pm
Ooh, that's nice. I agree with Maestro on the Boss Theme idea. It'd be great. ^_^
Sepharite
April 30th, 2006, 11:34 pm
Hmm.. you're exactly right although I was trying to avoid from a RPG-ish genre and into a more modern-classical. But I guess I have no choice =P

May 1st, 2006, 08:27 pm
Sounds very nice, maybe you could add like a flute, or a violin, and make those strings and stuff flow into like an orchestra, using the same chord progression, but in another way. I think that'd sound cool ^^
Marlon
May 2nd, 2006, 09:29 pm
At times, this song gets a little boring (not to mention the ending that I didn't enjoy at all), but overall it's a nice song. I think you should add more instruments or something. I think it has potential. Good job! :)
Sepharite
May 2nd, 2006, 10:27 pm
Haha... boring eh? Hmm... which part is boring (or just overall in general =( ) But thanks for the comments. =P
Anywho, I edited the ending.
Marlon
May 7th, 2006, 01:19 am
That's awesome! For some reason, it doesn't sound boring anymore. Maybe I was just having a boring day... XD Keep it up. :)
EDIT: Why don't you make the ending fade out? I think it'd sound nice.
Sepharite
May 7th, 2006, 03:53 am
Or maybe today, you're having a good day? Whatever it is, thank you for it ><
And I'm not actually done with it... I want to continue it (I just added the last note for effect reason), consider it is left than a minute and a half. I want to expand it to at least 2 minutes. Ideas?
Marlon
May 7th, 2006, 05:30 am
I think right after the last note, you should like... Bam!
Timpani and all the instruments strike a chord. Then maybe build the song up. Perhaps you can later slow it down and finish the piece. ^_^
Sepharite
May 27th, 2006, 01:54 pm
Thanks for the suggestion, although it's quite cliche - but cliche works =D
Here's another piece I edited (once known as Orange Monkeys). Added some random rhythmic parts. It was fun >_>

May 27th, 2006, 08:12 pm
I like almost all of yours. The thing bothering me is that they are very common... Well common is not the good word to explain what I feel. In fact, when I listen, I can't keep it in my mind. I can't keep a main melody or theme. Your songs are more figurative, and it's not the kind of songs someone will just listen it. However, I agree with the other, your songs are perfect for a RPG! And another good point (it's a good point for me): I can feel a kind of unity in all (I say all but I think I missed somes) your compositions, and for me it shows you found your own way, I can say that compositions are yours as I can say if they belong to Mozart or Bethov ones... Well I can't explain my feelings very well since english is not my language, but if you understand a bit what I wanted to mean I'm glad...^^
Sepharite
May 28th, 2006, 02:35 am
Lol. Thanks for the comment.. although I think I get what you're saying. I have my own unique style, but it's not a very good style XD And thanks again, for the comment! =D
Lolive
May 28th, 2006, 08:35 am
No no it's not really what I meant!!! yes you've your own style but I never said it was not a good one! I said I like your compositions! I truly like it!
Marlon
May 28th, 2006, 11:35 pm
Finish it! I like it very much. :)
I think what Lolive means is that the songs don't really have a theme that gets stuck in your head (by the way, a theme does NOT make a song boring if you use it correctly, in case you think it does ;) ); it has nothing do with style.
Sepharite
June 2nd, 2006, 03:27 am
When he mentioned famous composers, I'm pretty sure he was talking about how their style for each song was unique, and the same... and brilliant (unlike mine ;)) But thanks so much for commenting! Love ya! =P

Hm... Nice tensions you build... But the orchestration is quite messy, the strings are louder than the winds, and the winds are all clustered, and the clusteredness clashes into the strings.... x_x Make each instrument spread out from each other more.

Yeah, that's what I thought. LOL. Thanks for the tip... I think I should just combien two instruments into one.
And thanks for the comments, you guys. =D

Here's my attempt at a recording of Chopin's Revolutionary Etude at Richter's tempo. ><

And I fail horribly.... haha, but I think it's amusing. =S

Muahaha, some things to work on there. :bleh:
Anyway, good job overall. Gotta Record the IIIrd movment of the Pathetique (referring to me) and I think the same way as you, and it doesn't suck from your input! Muahaha :)

Here are some new recordings (Horay!... not)
This is my exam study... it's pretty easy notation wise, but to manage it's velocity was pretty difficult. :heh: I think I did an okay job.
http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=1916928C43F20151
And here's an improv I made. I was in the mood so I made up stupid/random chords... And I wanted to Jazz it up at the end but only one note got up. -_-

PS. If anyone wants the sheet to the study, ask anytime.

Meh, ignore the above. I just realised how crappy it is ><
Here's a very very old piece. Made two-three years ago... feel like posting it. XD

Created 4 bars of block chords and variated the rhythm/notes during every modulation. I could continue but it's started to get bland, imo. What do you guys think of it?

It started out good, but it got old very fast after that I'm afraid.

Lol. I see. Thanks for the comment! I'll just take the first 4 bars... and delete the rest! =D

Here's something I came up with in a few minutes. Really simplistic chords. :heh: But I like the melody. :)

I like that peice. Its so.. nice.

August 23rd, 2006, 02:53 am
Lol. Thank you. I think it needs a lot of work in the base... it's too simple. =/
RD
August 23rd, 2006, 05:35 am
Maybe turn the notes of the base up (like 8th to 16th, so on). and have a chord like it already is and then the next just one note an so on.
Just an idea... but I like the chords in the base.

can you play it?
It doesn't seem that hard, he can play harder than that-so I put my money on he CAN play that.
Anyways, I like that song-A lot! Keep it goin'.

Here's an intro to... a very dark dark piece. I'm in a very dark dark mood, as can probably tell. :heh:

September 10th, 2006, 07:22 pm
@_@ Weird weird chords, sounds like cheap atonal chords, no offence... I don't really like it, and it's not really dark... It's more like... Um... Very annoyed and you're about to blow up. Although, instead of using a normal flute for the melody, I'd suggest a bass flute/alto flute, as it gives a more hollow sense, and your violin high notes should be touch fourth harmonics, to give a more eerie and glass effect. I don't really like it, but work on it, I want to see how it turns out. ;)
Sepharite
September 10th, 2006, 07:26 pm
LOL! Thanks for the fast reply :P What are "touch fourth harmonics"? Interverals of 4th?
I'll work on it anyways, I'm bored. Thanks again.

Is that even possible with MIDI or Finale (2003)? How would I do that? =)
And here's something I was editing... it's kinda atonal. =P
Sir_Dotdotdot
September 10th, 2006, 07:36 pm
XD It's not quite atonal, just semi-chromatistic (or something like that). It's pretty nice... But I think you can do more stuff to the strings, it's a little to bland and dull. But finish it or something, it's pretty nice.
Marlon
September 10th, 2006, 07:58 pm
Well, given that Sir thought it was nice, then I guess this simply doesn't appeal to my taste then? Honestly, it sounds rather random to me. :heh:
Milchh
September 10th, 2006, 08:30 pm
Doesn't sound random to me, it's that cool "out-of-place" feeling that some notes do with that chromatic or atonal feeling, but it isn't random-very hard to explain.
I do some improvations like that on piano, so I can see it isn't random. But I like the strings playing on the off-beat.
Good job, keep it up.

I liked it. The strings came in ok but then it got wierd for me. The distorted sound makes for an excellent earie atmosphere.

I have a feeling I posted this before though. =/

Thats cool you´ve got some scary stuff going on in the begining but at about 00:55 I lost that eerie feeling. the thing with the music in lost is that its mostly strings and brass making rythm and hits rather than melodie.
great job until 55 though.

I get the impression that there's a lot of intended humor in your compositions XD
Your clown pieces are the best IMO, and Ouabi was really cool too. Do you not like finishing pieces, or do you just prefer short ones? Or do you just not like most of your ideas that you randomly end them? A lot of your compoositions have bits and pieces that can be built upon (I think, anyway)

Lol, thanks for the comment!
My friend really likes the clown pieces too. She was listening to it all day - and got it stuck in her head. Poor girl. It reminds her of marching elephants btw. X/
And I don't finish them because I don't have inspiration to continue them. And I can't think of anything... I always question what I'm doing and delete it immediately. Bad habit. ;_;

Many of your compositions are crazy sounding (which is good) and some sound random in a good way. I especially like your clown (it made me laugh for some reason) and your summer's day songs. Good work.

Woah. I haven't been here in so long :heh: (I missed you guys)
Anyways, I've been working on Joe Hisaishi's View of Silence, adding some strings.. and some other random instruments. It needs quite a lot of work but any criticism is accepted =)
