Okaay so I've decided that jazz is a good idea. I like it and jazz chord progressions come naturally to me. And no one besides Maestro pays any attention to my page anymore. So thanks to you, bud. But so far I only have 2 jazz compositions, hopefully with more on the way. Hope you like (or at least appreciate) the songs!

Like I said from your old thread, you are Jazz-Talented mainly.
I'd love to hear other drafts and songs from you Trumpet.

Try something else? Dude this guy has the perfect tech. for this type of style. Now, it's just to your distaste of jazz that's leading you.. to unleading you to liking this.

Pretty good songs You should extend them with open solo sections specially when writing funk.

Not bad if you ask me, though I don't know much jazz.

I didn't quite enjoy the first one; but I think the second was pretty damn good. ;)

I don't know a lot about music, but I'll comment anyway, being a jazz fan.
Liquid Rhythem: if only we could hear the real trumpet! I love the melody. It reminds me of a relaxed day at the beach.
Turn Signal: It's one of those "stacked" songs! It is varied when the trumpet comes in. But you knew that :P The interchanging melody between the trumpet and piano is awesome! Nice percussion, but it just doesn't seem enough, like it's missing the beat while you're tuned into the trumpet. Once I am paying attention to the melody I quit worrying about the percussion. So, maybe you can try unifying the instruments?
I hope I helped somehow! :)

Whow. Good first impression I guess. And One_Winged, I was ACTUALLY going to think of trying something like that soon. But I'm not sure. It's a lot tougher, doing big band jazz than it is combo jazz. Of course once my technique with jazz chord progressions improves, I could probably put together something for a full jazz band. But thank you all for the comments and criticism. I MUST start composing another one.

Yeh, definitely - the second piece actually sounds like it really is meant to be for big band to me :P. I enjoyed the interplay between the leads, though it would be nice to have some brass stabs here and there for some extra flair ;). The first one was alright, but feels more static - some more action from the piano (the player's only using one hand right now it seems), bass (you've neglected this guy in both of your pieces :(), or drums (emphasize the changes more so) would've been nice. But nice to see more from you - keep them coming.

Okay. So I finished my first big band piece. I swear there is not a thing in this world as hard as writing one of those and making it sound good. So yeah. Give me some input on how you like it. Or don't like it. But please make the criticism constructive. This IS my first after all. So yeah. Don't trash me TOO bad. And if you say ANYTHING about shoes I will personally shank you. Thanks! Btw... it's called "Bristles"

Hey not too shabby.
I liked the head on this one, it was pretty catchy.
I also like how it kind of switched into and out of a latin theme.
The body seemed a little miss placed though, I feel a better transition could have been made.
Its also nothing like the Big Bands of Glenn Miller. They play swing music while this seemed close to being a funk piece.
The song as a whole was catchy though, Good Job!

Dang! Hey, that's a great to almost a perfect piece you've made there Trumpet! I love how the middle section has that off-beat.. beat, sounds very cool-like the jazz... :shifty:
I would like to hear a neat piano in there as well, expecially backing up the brass chords, and also have its own improv solo, prior to the trumpet. Anyway, that's just my opinion.
Greeaatt Job! Still a cool jazz cat... ;)

ahahaahahah! It's funny you should mention that Maestro. See... I wanted to write a big band piece. And I'm a piano player. But... I don't have a piano part scored for this piece. The ONLY part not scored. kinda sad ain't it?

Okay. So it's not TRULY one of my own compositions, but it's my first arrangement of ANYTHING before. It's a really popular motown blues song called Money! Listen and tell me what I need to fix. Thanks!

Hey I've heard this one before. It was performed by a band at our school not too long ago.
Good song

Ooh! I like the first one...Very...Smooth. I like some of the off-beat piano, it adds a really nice touch. Nice enjoyable progression. Nice fade at the end. :)
I just started and already I'm lovin' the bass! Wow, the percussion is nice too, but I like the way you did the piano. Great off-beat rythms (sp?) again and a great progression you've got going on. I like the piano at 1:20 and 1:36. It's cool how you switch between the piano and the trumpet like that, it's really cool IMO! Awesome job!
Bristles...I'm liking this one too a lot. I'm liking what you did at :34 with the drums and bass. Very off-beat and...Abstract I guess...It's a little interesting how you keep adding intruments there, but I like how you got back on track switching the percussion at 1:30 and the trumpet fade out. That was a cool effect. :P Overall I'm liking this piece a lot. It's not the best, but at the same time it's not bad. It's really good though is what it is! Nice job for your first Big Band song. :)
Money, this was arranged nicely. I'd have to hear the original to compare but I'm liking this a lot.I don't think it is as original as some of your other stuff but it is definetely a fine arrangement.
Your a natural when it comes to Jazz! You have a good sense of Jazz chord progressions, chording and piano improv. A lot of original ideas thrown in and you've got yourself a nice mix going on. Great job! :D

Hey nice job with money. You picked a real evil key signature for the trumpet @_@ .
Was this arranged for Concert Band or Marching Band?

Thank you for your kind comments everyone. Jazz is a rather new field to me, and since there aren't too many people in THIS set of forums to build off of in that area (most others stick to RPG or classical approaches to music), it's much more difficult to become fluent in that kind of music. I guess I've developed a kind of Herbie Hancock-ish feel to my jazz stuff, and sometimes I think it's good, other times I think I could expand more. Speaking of which, I have a new chord progression just waiting to be written. See all my (not-really-adoring) fans later ;)
Edit: Money isn't in a bad key. I just haven't transposed it into Bb. And it's written for Pep Band. If you play at basketball or football games, that's one of the songs that would be played.

Its not a bad key, its just 5 sharps for trumpet can become not fun very fast if you know what I mean.
Also for a band like a pep band or a marching band, brass is your go to section. I'd suggest less woodwind and more brass with a big, powerful, and fat sound.

why thanks for that, Porsche. I imagined that the balance would be slightly different in an actual band, because my program is crappy at making balance. So oh well. But hey, if there's ever a recording made, I'll definitely put it on here to show you guys. BUT! That's enough about that! I have a new song! I've loved this chord progression for a while now, and I hadn't actually written a song about it. It's another combo tune, I'm afraid, so those of you that only liked bristles will not be as pleased with it. But I beg you to listen to it! So all my hard work and effort will not be TOTALLY in vain. I give you: "The Last Blossom in Winter."
