...i think they made the fire element evil because it is quite traditional and since the title says "the last AIRbender", not "the last FIREbender or WATERbender"...

NoooOOo! Water is my favourite element. Its MY element lol. Besides, fire makes a stronger image for the enemy. As much as I'd like water to be more in the scene--it'd seem less formidable.

I'd like to be a firebender! Am I the only one who wants to be a firebender?

I love the show. I'm pretty sure it comes from America, but the animation is really beautiful. Most cartoons I see that try to mimic the Anime style are usually very brightly-colored and cheesy, but this series has a great storyline and great characters.

(This is actually Angelic using Spoon's account)

I've seen parts of the show and it doesn't impress me, to be honest. It might be the horrible Dutch dubbing. Anyway, it's a US production that's trying to be like anime (and in my eyes fails in doing that because it just doesn't work).

Not saying that americans can't use manga/anime style (look at something like Megatokyo) but Avatar just doesn't cut it for me.

Sepharite
August 20th, 2006, 04:31 pm
Lol. Maybe they were trying to have a western/japanese style cartoon? Not like it matters. It's the story, the characters that really matters. And the animation is f*cking awesome anyways, have you seen the action sequences? =D

Aaaand I changed my opinion about this show after seeing several episodes in the hospital (this time in the correct order) and it's not bad at all. In fact I think it's one of the better Nickelodeon toons, along with Fairly Odd Parents, Kappa Mikey (just cos it's so wrong) and my favourite, Danny Phantom.

November 19th, 2006, 05:22 pm
Sokka shouldn't die; he's the comedy relief person. Zuko (as much as I hate to think so) will most likely die, because he is a sad and depressing character. Aang will be killed in the last episode, or go missing, because that's just the kind of cliche they always do.
Avatar is awesome.

i think that aang will go missing and kitara will realise her hidden love for him, therefore there has to be a happy ending for those two. Uncle will be killed by azula and zuko joins aang to get his revenge on his father. as for saka i think he will go back to the northern water kingdom and marry the princess. tai will continue to follow aang and let him master earth bending. buts thats only my opinion

When is book three going to come out? Im so anxious for it, that I can't stand it. Btw I do think this is a really good show from what I have seen in book one and book two. Although yeah its not anime, its still a great show that I watch daily, no matter if it is a re-run. But still if it were a regular cartoon then this would of happend:

**Warning, if you have not seen the end of book two don't read this!**

In the last battle in book two, Zuko would have sided with the Anng and his uncle. And then the earth kingdom would not have fallen to the fire nation.

So yeah its not an every day, run of the mill, cartoon. At the very least you can say that, because if you look at other cartoons made by the U.S. then you can say well yeah there really aren't many other cartoons that are like this in this form made by the U.S. Well anyways I just wanted to say what I thought of the show. And even if most of the stuff I've posted has been in earlier posts, I just wanted to what I thought of it anyways. Please no criticisms!

pianocrazy90
December 17th, 2006, 05:41 am
Yeah, your right. All I mean is that Avatar is not like most cartoons made in the U.S. is all. And I also mean as in America cartoons you see have mainly happy endings to each and every episode, but Japan is different considering it doesn't really do that when it comes to Anime. Because they want to develop a storyline that takes up few to many episodes untill it gets to the end with a either a climatic ending or anti-climatic. And even when it gets to the end of the show it doesn't mean they are going to be happy endings. They might be sad ones. But as you see now a days quite a few of America's cartoons are very abrupt and don't have climatic endings, they just stop making the show all together when they feel they have made a good amount of episodes for the show. Anyway thats all I was trying to get across.
And yes, I know the director has a reason for what he does.

M
December 17th, 2006, 01:17 pm
Actually the difference between Japanese and American anime (other than art style) is how they focus on story. America tends to focus more on Action and overall story. Japan focuses more on character development and relations.

Shinji Mimura
December 18th, 2006, 05:53 pm

It probably has to do with the fact that american cartoons are generally aimed at a much younger audience than most anime. Little kids don't like sad endings.

RD
December 19th, 2006, 05:13 am
Angelic is right; take Fox and the Hound as an example. Very sad Disney movie, very well made but its reception from children wasn't was good as other movies, probably because its full of melancholy moments.

Shinji Mimura
December 19th, 2006, 06:59 pm
heehee well i still feel like a child at 15 :P

pianocrazy90
December 19th, 2006, 10:08 pm
@ Angelic- Yeah your right about that American cartoons are meant for children more then they are shot at adolescence and adults. Because in America, do you really think many teens ( well some might) and adults will want to watch some cartoon? The answer to this question is going to probably be no, because when an American person wants to watch tv they usually want to see some action ( as M said) or suspenseful show. Most Americans don't really realize the gift of anime, and even if they heard of it, chances are they are not going to watch it. While a Japanese person might know of it and may want to watch it because its something they would like and maybe even something they wish they could apply to everyday life (probably not). But yeah to sum it up as both M and Angelic have said, American cartoons are aimed at children because thats who'd watch them the most, therefore they have to have a happy ending otherwise they would not get good ratings and/or feedback ( as R.D has said). But anime is sometimes aimed at either teens, adults, or both. There are some anime made for the kiddies as well, but not as much.

Whoops, sorry people it looks like we've gotten off-topic. Well I guess it is my fault, my appologies to everybody that has posted and will post in this thread.

Actually, the kanji is Mandarin. But there are a few variations of a few chinese beliefs, like the elements. Originally, there were five, Fire, Water, Earth, Wind, and Metal. They pretty much grouped Earth and Metal together. And the fighting styles were based off of real fighting styles, like Northern Xiaolin (Fire benders) and Taichi (Kinda obvious..... I don't even need to say it..... >_>). So, it was based off beliefs and fighting styles from China, but there were a few variations in it.
