canīt we have a composition-competition of some kind?

like, we pick a specific theme or instrument, a starting date and an end date, you post your composition and then we vote for the one we think should win... or something.

Good idea, bad idea?

We do have these, we had one with the theme of "The Night" or a i believe, and then we also had one for Christmas. I haven't checked lately if we have had any more for I am a performer, not a composer.

We have those, there just haven't been any recently. Ask Noir7 about it. He's the one who organizes them.

Yeah, we even had a nifty little abbreviation: CMA (Composition of the Month Awards).

Not to be confused with the Country Music Awards.

LoL.

Last time you'd have to make a song with someone else. ;)

So let's pick a theme. Throw out some suggestions folks!

Don't ask me where this came from; I have no clue; it *might* be something I came up with, but most likely it's from something that I heard somewhere and completely forgot when, where, and how...here's my theme submission, though it's more of a phrase than a whole theme...

Hey, since Spring has just "sprung" its little head, how about something to kick off the last season of school? (If you have school, or anything else, you get the picture)

@tan eh, it sounds-OK.

It's just been stuck in my head for the past couple of days, and since I can't find the source, I needed to stick it somewhere before I went crazy <_< Of course, that's not the way I actually hear it; it's just that if people were to use it as a motif, they'd want to embellish it on their own...

How about some kind of a short but sweet brass fanfare?

One_Winged
March 22nd, 2006, 10:20 am
something sweet and petit, maybe?

something sweet and petit, maybe?

With our own kind of "big" styles in it too, right? I am up for a sweet, and possibly petit.. not petit, something that sounds sweet, in the many ways of the word.

I don't know. In the past we've always done small-scale themes. I remember ones that were like: solo piano, piano and an instrument, no more than three instruments, etc. Eventually, I'd like to see one that's for full orchestra. But I'm feeling the Spring thing. I'd be willing to do some more small-scale stuff.

Maestrosetti

How about the theme would be to write a fanfare dedicated to spring?

i'd be up for a full orchestra composition...

didn't we have arrangement contests too? or was that just an idea that never went through?

Al

I think the arrangement contest never did go through, I don't remember . .

But I feel that it's better to choose a theme (like spring), and then limit the restrictions and allow the composer to write for as many instruments as s/he desires.

So . . any objections to spring? If not, we can make it official, and I can start setting something up =)

Yay! So many people like my spring idea. =D

I would really go for a solo or duet maybe to a trio, but arrangement I am not up for, but if we must I will...

Maestrosetti

So are we making this official? It's a fine idea.

But didn't we do a spring one last year already? :/

Yeh... Fall/Spring, depending on which side of the hemisphere you lived on :P.

Maestrosetti
March 24th, 2006, 12:28 pm
Well, well. That makes things different. In case that idea doesn't pull through, why don't we just have an orchestral theme? I know it's quite broad, but people seem to want to do that (as would I).

I like spring; it bears repeating. Especially since I'm surrounded by FREAKING SNOW! It makes me sad.

hmmmmmmmmmm. orchestral music ? XD I'll like to join that. ^^

Al
March 25th, 2006, 02:22 am
So the general consensus is a spring theme for orchestra?

Constaneum
March 25th, 2006, 02:33 am
Spring theme ? hmmm......... i think what that dude meant is why not having an orchestral theme, not spring theme for orchestra.

You and me both, I am so depressed. It should be grassy, 65, blue sky some clouds and sunlight, not this depressing Polish weather... anyway yea orchestral is fine.

EDIT - Can it be a mini-concerto ?

Constaneum
March 25th, 2006, 10:00 am
why not making it a free theme ? :D The composers will be judged on their orchestral skill, arrangement and melody as well as whether the title fits in with their music or not. What do u reckon ? :D

Sepharite
March 25th, 2006, 07:05 pm
Free theme is boring! It's completely random, I don't like that idea =P
Why not be judged on orchestral skill, arrangement, melody, and the ability to convey the emotion of that particular theme. More the better...

I like the Spring idea... it's very "now". If not, someone can choose an image of Spring and compose a piece of music as pictures are a thousands words.

I particularly like this image. =)

It is important to choose a theme, otherwise it becomes difficult to judge songs. It's easier to compare "Happy Birthday" to "I'm a little teacup" than to a love ballad.

By orchestral, I meant, non-chamber music (more than . . 7 instruments?). A mini-concerto should be fine. But to confirm, is that what you guys want? A large work for spring? Let's get this competition started!

Constaneum
March 25th, 2006, 08:12 pm
so we're still making an orchestral music for spring right ?

Sepharite
March 25th, 2006, 08:28 pm
I don't think we should restrict the type of music it should be. How about more than 2/3 instruments?

Noir7
March 25th, 2006, 10:59 pm
I agree with Sepharite somewhat. IMO the composer should be able to decide how many, and which instruments s/he wants to use. The idea about spring sounds good though, and it *is* what we all are waiting for right now (except you lucky non-scandinavian ppl I guess..)

If we're going for the spring theme, I already have one finished since way back :D

I like the the idea of composing a song based on a picture, maybe for a competition (after this one for spring, since everyone seems to like that idea atm) we could have a picture for everyone to compose a song on. Kinda reminds me of our field show last year in marching band, the music was "The World of M.C. Escher" and the movements were based off three of his pictures.

So there won't be a limit on instrumentation for this one?

Milchh
March 26th, 2006, 04:38 am
Sure, no limit.

Al

Awesome. Can someone set up the thread? Preferably Noir7? If not, I'll do it, hehe.

I'll also vote for the idea of composing music base on a pic. Most movie music are composed to fit in with the movie (base on screenshots, actions, storyline and etc). This is definitely an important element in music composition for composers. Therefore, I'll say this is a very good idea. Thumbs up. :D
