Nintendo goes 'Wii' ... (not a typo).

Read the story here -

Nintendo Revolution to be renamed Wii. (http://money.cnn.com/2006/04/27/commentary/game_over/nintendo/?cnn=yes)

I thought Revolution was just the codename for it. Yeah, they're not renaming it, they're just revealing the real name.

It's a pretty interesting name. I don't know whether I like it or not. Time to give this some deep thought...yeah, I guess I like it. It's fun. Wii!

At least they come up with original names, rather that that than the Gamebube 2 or something lame like that.

Maestrosetti

Wow. The Gamebube. Now that would have been a funny name for their new console.

Lamepube sounds funnier. Remember calling it that when I used to disike Nintnendo. Yeah, Wii will rule, most definitely. Red Steel looks awesome.

It's name doesn't really matter to me. In my opinion, it's just how great the console performs.

Im not getting it anymore. Ps3 first then revolution now.

Why wii? Does it mean something in japanese?:\

Paradox

if you read the article, it's because it sounds like "we" and the 2 ii's represent the 2 controllers and some other stuff.

You're not getting it because of the name?

Introducing... Wii.

As in "we."

While the code-name Revolution expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer. Wii will break down that wall that seperates videogame players from everybody else. Wii will put people more in touch with their games... and each other. But you're probably asking: What does the name mean?

Wii sounds like "we," which emphasizes the console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.

Wii has a distinctive "ii" spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people playing it. And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of videogames that sets it apart from the crowd.

So that's Wii. But now Nintendo needs you. Because it's really not about you or me. It's about Wii. And together, Wii will change everything.

^^ i really cant tell right now. (i at first hated the name, but now im more indifferent) i think its kinda smart to do what nintendo is doing. since both the 360 and ps3 are offering essentially the same thing (mind blowing graphics never seen before), maybe it is a smart move just to be "different". besides, the graphics on the "wii" arent going to be horrible either. fact is, this is an upgrade from the last system, so its bound to be better. i also just read on howstuffworks.org that its going to be made backwards compatible, all the way to the original nintendo. so that's going to be interesting to see how they do that. as of now though, i really cant tell if its going to raise or drop buisness. myself, im not decided yet as to which system of the next generation im going to buy (i can pretty much say that i wont be doing the 360. yeah, its got power, but im probably going to go between the ps3 and wii because those systems carry a bunch of my childhood memories with them)

This is the most stupidest thing Nintendo has ever done. "Hey MOM! I'm going to play with my Wii now!!" Mothers are going to be worried if this becomes a norm. "So, you wanna go play with my Wii?"

Revolution was a great name.... I couldn't care less if it was a "Codename" KIDS NEXT DOOOR IS A CODE NAME!!!!!!!!!!!! And they still are known as it. Revolution "has a certain force to it".

I think no matter how lame the name could considered to be, it shows that Nintendo's daring with their names. In fact, the only nintendo systems that ever had the name of its predecessor were the SNES (from NES) and the gameboy line of handhelds. All the other consoles had a new name, something Sony is afraid to do (OMG BUT PLAYSTATION IS LIEK TEH THING THAT MAKES PPL BUY IT) and same for M$, although they are a bit more original than Sony for skipping the numbers 2 to 359 directly towards 360.

M$ has an idea with their name, and so does Nintendo. Sony doesn't. It's just the playstation (OMG NOW THATS COOL) with the number 3 (OMG ITS LEIK TEH THIRD IN LINE SO ORIGINAL). Microsoft figured that 360 degrees creates a circle, which they somehow incorporated in the Xbox (OMG ITS A BOX WITH AN X) 360. As you can see by the way, all consoles have lame names. Live with it or buy a PC (OMG PERSONAL COMPUTER).

Basically no computer ever had a cool name.

The Apple 1 is the COOLEST name and the best PC EVER made.

It's not a PC though, it's an Apple. PC is the term used for IBM compatible computers, nowadays anything that could run Windows.

Mega Drive is by far the best name for anything, ever.

Neko Koneko
May 8th, 2006, 06:19 pm
Not quite. I liked the American name (Genesis) way better. Same with Saturn. Dreamcast was so-so but still better than Playstation.

Sega knew how to name a product. Too bad they didn't know how to marketise it.

Playstation is a pitiful name if you REALLY think about it.

I have seen a few people on the board say they're not going to buy this because of it's name

And where the hell is Elite666? He had great gaming insight

Neko Koneko
May 14th, 2006, 11:53 am
I don't know where he disappeared to x_x

People who don't buy a console because of its name are just shallow idiots and they would never enjoy something unconventional like Wii. They should just stick to conventional systems like the PS3 or XBox 360, that offer nothing refreshing but just more of the same.

I can understand freshness, but Wii? I mean Nintendo has just opened a can of worms for Wii jokes. Don't matter to me though. I'm hardcore Sony fan...

(FF, MGS, God of War, they're just great games)

Are you all really that superficial? I think you're just afraid of change. You want the same old thing over and over again with nothing but improved graphics. And I do not think in any way that the Wii will ruin Nintendo. I'm sure it's huge in Japan, but if it is going to have trouble selling anywhere, it's America, because that country is unquestionably the shallowest when it comes to things like that.

You don't actually move around and stuff, that was just to make it look flashy. The only thing you move is the controller.

You got to realize one thing though, Nintendo is not really in the same market age group as the 360 or the PS3. Nintendo has taken the course to be the console for the younger kids, like 8-16ish. The 360 and the PS3 are for a more mature/adult audience. Wii just seems to be something little kids may find funny because younger kids find things to be cool that more mature people find to be annoying/stupid.

Also the Wii has less buttons. LESS. Other then going out and buying your 64 games and controllers all over again, the buying games through the back catalouge idea isn't going to work so well. As well as that, the FPS that they have been showing off (buggered if I know what its called right now...) is just a light gun game. Think people before you buy. Or try it out. Whichever comes first

How many light gun games have been made so you can manuvre in a completely 3D environment? The new Metroid game is going to incorporate this.

And the controller issue for the back catalogue, Nintendo have a different, more conventional looking controller designed for that very reason.

Didnt they say we could use a gamecube controller with it?

mystery_editor
May 30th, 2006, 01:46 am
Well, all the new ones do. and its kinda irrelivent whether or not you can actually move around. Then its just a FPS without a mouse.

You can use a GC controller i do believe, but you have to buy the new version thats built for the Wii if i remember correctly

Sigh but you DO get to take advantage of the controller's sensing mechanism thing to shoot and aim.

A normal light gun game = Time Crisis

You're given a set screen in which to shoot all the baddies. I haven't seen an FPS where you can move freely in a 3D environment and use a light gun type peripheral to shoot shit up with.

Get out.

Since this looks to be the Wii thread, let's discuss the launch games.

Zelda and Metroid, with Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bros not too far behind. Looking good.

Yay xenophobia >.>

Anyhow, I'm seriously looking forward to what the Wii can do to the puzzle genre. Meteos was an awesome employment of the stylus...now can Nintendo pull off something with four people frantically scribbling on one single playing field? :D

And I still want a voice-controlled Pokemon RPG...

younger kids find things to be cool that more mature people find to be annoying/stupid.

Because shooting the stuffing out of everything that moves is mature, and raising a farm and a family is annoying/stupid.[/sarcasm] Speaking of which, I want to try Harvest Moon sometime...I wonder how that will show up on the Wii?
