umm guys, can you give some tips on how to improve improvisations? mine sounds very dry :heh: it really feels good if you suddenly made a mistake in your piece and just covered it up by improvising ^_^ or playing music w/out sheets :)

you got to know what chord you're in at the time of the mistake. If you want to become good at improvisation you have to learn your scales inside out. It's just a case of knowing what notes fit both that chord and the key of the whole piece. If you want to be good at improvisation by itself without anything, then you just got to feel the music and let it flow from your hands.

I know what all the keys sound like in my head so Its like playing in my head and then letting fingers catch up. I cant read sheet music but if theres one thing i can do its improvise.

you do know that's not helpful to the guy whatsoever? but i've got a question, do you have to stop in the middle and play what comes from your head?

@elden - do you just want to improvise right hand tunes or do you actually want to be able to improvise both hands?

Im just saying how i do it which can help, sometimes your hands will play without you thinking and it would sound good, another thing is practice. Make sure you know the key your playing well enough to know how it sounds.
Vary the timing of your notes, and peole hate being told this but listen to songs, they give you ideas.

I dont stop halfway through i play as it comes to me (while im playing) Thats why they call it improvising.

yeah was just checking, actually reading sheet music gives you ideas as well to help you. You get more complicated stuff that way.

Learn the pentatonic scales.

Or something.

If it is a solo you are improvising, try to write you own solo out before hand and practice it. Once you feel comfortable with it and know it by heart, start changing up the rhythms and such.

All you need is the scale if it's a solo. Now... when you're accompanying a chorus like I do... and you mess up... you can't stop... x_x

Know your scales, know your chords, know the chord progression... and over all, feel it.

You're probably missing the "feel it" bit as Nicolas has said. If you can't do that, it's hard to make a good tune.

Dont make it boring by moving up and down. Move on different parts of the piano. Use loud and quiet sounds. Vary rythm. And PRACTICE. You cant just make good solos from the start. it comes with time.
