Hi, ive noticed that most of the compositions on here are in a classical-ish style.... then again, most music from games and anime has that style too. I was wondering if anyone else here ever listens to or composes jazz music. I'm a sax player, so I LOVE IT :D . I'll post a few of my jazz compositions if people are interested. Many of my composition friends on AIM dont like jazz and dont want to hear :( ...

If anyone else listens to jazz, who are your favorite players? I love Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Joshua Redman.. i could go on and on!

I like Jazz every now and then. But I think it would be too hard for me to learn how to play or analyze it.

I only know Oscar Peterson . . . I hope he's a jazz player. :heh:

I've played Trombone in a big-band for 5 years, so yes I enjoy jazz :)

I'm not listening to particuliar artists. I like old jazz pianist (Basie, Ellington), big band, female singers (Ella Fitzgerald, Dee Dee Bridgewater, or younger one..Dawn Tyler Watson). I like bluesy jazz too. Or more experimental/techno.. jaga jazzist.

I'll be please to hear your compositions !

I'm fairly big into jazz. I even played in a combo doing gigs for a year (I play tenor sax). I'd love to hear any compositions you have. I'll even see if I can dig out a few of mine.

I listen mostly to the local jazz scene but my favourite famouus jazz player would be Wayne Shorter. Also can't forget Miles Davis, the only thing that compares to his album "Kind of Blue" is Coltrane's "A Love Supreme".

Oscar Peterson is a Canadian Jazz Pianist. Before his stroke he was probably one of the top five pianists worldwide.

Some of my stuff sounds a little like the metropolis soundtrack (http://forums.ichigos.com/index.php?act=ST&f=8&t=917). Has anyone else listened to it?

Are you talking about Metropolis the anime, or Metropolis by Fritz Lang (the 1927 movie) ?

I like Jazz but I find it pretty hard to learn too. ^_^ I'm interested in learning Scott Joplin's ragtime, The Entertainer.

As for other jazz, I'm interested as well. Any nice one to recommend?

Have no choice. I have to listen to it, simply because you cannot play jazz without hearing it from another person.

As for the lack of jazz compostions, well it's JUST PLAIN' HARD TO MIDI-fy JAZZ!!!!! sorry for the out-burst.

Yeah, without the nice acoustic sound, jazz just isn't... jazz. On the upside, Finale really does have an excellent Acoustic bass sample and a fairly good trumpet and clarinet sample. So, as long as you're willing to take the time to change the volume on the seperate notes for proper inflexions it can work.

@saiyuki_gaiden

If you want to learn jazz, you should start with the early stuff if for no other reason than it's really hard to like modern jazz right away. Ellington is extremely accessible. I'd also suggest Thelonius Monk and Louis Armstrong (pre-"Hello Dolly"). If you're going to be playing jazz there is one album you need to buy: "Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis. You'll here every main musician of the time and really get a feel for what jazz is.

sorry about the three replies, ive been away from the forum for a while. Yeah.. i find the best way to record jazz is with audio recordings, not MIDI. Programs like cakewalk or apple's garageband will let you record each track live on the keyboard.

Has anyone here done any actual live recordings with a Jazz group? I've done a few with my band and one with my combo. I've always found this is the only way to record jazz properly, it retains the spontaneity of it.

the only live recording i've done for jazz is with my jazz band at school so we can send it to a festival and hope to get accepted. We have an awesome jazz band this year. We had a pianist and guitarist who won scholarships for best solos in a festival. And we have a solid drum player too. I like jazz but not really into it. I only know names of songs (Sing Sing Sing, Green Onion, the Chicken, In the Mood...etc) but not the guys who wrote it... :( i'm bad with names. but yeah, love to play jazz as well as soloing.... i play vibes (for those who don't know what a vibe is, it's basically a larger version of the xylophone but has a pedal like on a piano to make the sounds echo). Yes, vibes. I'm known as Vibe boy (or Bell boy, but that makes me sound like i work at a hotel...)...
