Do you guys, when first reading the sheet for a new song, number the notes in regards to your fingers?

Like zairamik, I recently started playing the piano again (finally saved up enough $ for a PX110). I started easy with Black Cat's "Konoyo no Uta" and am currently trying to play "Fields of Hope" (GSD).

Basically, I'm having trouble finding an "efficient" way for my fingers to travel in regards to the bass cleff. I was wondering if you guys had some sort of "strategy" when tackling these things, or do you just keep playing until you get used to it?

Also, the 3rd page of that piece... How do you travel the octave, hold it for 4 beats, and still play the rest of the bass cleff? Maybe my hands just aren't as flexible as they were when I was playing in my prime

I suppose my question wasn't very clear, sorry :P

I'm trying to play the ones Josh transcribed, but for Fields of Hope, my left hand is having trouble playing those octaves "fast enough". I don't have trouble syncing left and right hand, but I'm having trouble finding "the best way" to travel the notes with my left hand.

Also, for the latter half of the piece, the right hand plays a full octave and includes 2 extra notes in it. How the heck do I stretch my hand far enough for that? x_x

Hope that clears it up

For the left hand, are you referring to the jumps that start in measure 41? If so, play the octave whole notes as if they were staccato, immediately lifting your hand up and repositioning it so that your pinky is on the next note. The pedal will hold that octave for you. So the fingering for measures 41-42 should go like
(51) * 5 (21) 5 (21) 5 (21) 5 * (51) * 5 (21) 5 * (51) 2 (51) 2
where a * indicates that you'll need to jump.

As for the right hand, most of the chords should be played with (125). The B-flat in measure 85 should be played with a 3 (and held through the measure if possible, but feel free to let go and let the pedal hold it for you), and the first chord in measure 87 should be played with (1245). It may feel a little bit uncomfortable at first, especially if you haven't played in a while, but it'll get better :) it should be reachable by most adult-sized hands provided that they work a little bit on flexibility...

Above all, don't be afraid to detach notes that are too hard to connect. That's what the pedal is for ;)
