The guy's tie in the first one does not look like a tie. the thingie by the neck is supposed to look this way: \/. Not /\. Unless the guy's a moron and doesn't know how to put on a tie. XD

I prefer the one with the ball because this skeleton horse looks like a circus horse, and the ball just adds more to its character. :)

XD It's funny how you were kept updating then all of a sudden, two years go by and you update again. Other than that, your drawings are amazing :). I like the softness in your pictures. The lines are nice and curved and it fives a nice feel to them :D. And I don't know it's because you took pictures of your drawings instead of scanning or it was the paper(previous drawings), but the non colored in areas are kinda sepia-ish...:heh: I don't know if it's because of my lack of sleep or something, but it's very "soft"...oh, and how did you get the dotted effect?

Nyu001
July 17th, 2009, 12:21 am
The dotted effect is a technique with pen. The darker the area the closer are the dots and the quantity is bigger than areas with light.

The Pokemon looks quite nice! The only thing that seem weird is the front left leg.

pixiepieberry
July 17th, 2009, 03:42 am
haha senior year and first year of college take away my time to draw nice big pictures all i've been doing are little ones like the charmander and squirtle one. Plus i only draw when i get that *feeling* or motivation/inspiration/idea to draw. XD I haven't felt that in awhile. The paper looks sepia because i only have that orangey colored light in my room (not a big fan of white light) hehe i also like the *old paper* look.

The dotting, as Nyu001 said is a technique with pen. It is called stippling(the dotting) and crosshatching (the lines; this can be seen more on the skeleton horse's feather or the griffin's wings). I do this usually a fine-tipped Sharpie. dots close together=shading. dots spread more apart=lighting. This technique is quite tedious and takes a lot of patience and time but it is worth it in the end. Just dot away!

here's another stipple this time with a dry erase marker on my teacher's board

 Yay!!

Lolz, for the first pic...in my opinion, you put a lot of detail into the eyes...and they kind of pop out compared to the rest of the pic. I like your shading style though. I usually can't do that kind of style...or rather, it just never seems to match up with the rest of my pic....Oh, and I don't know if it's because she's sitting down or what, but she looks just a bit disproportional. Like...really skinny up top, and huge hips down...

For the second pic....something about the face is bothering me, but I can't put my finger on it....and the hands. XD But almost everyone has trouble with hands and feet so I don't blame you there.

And I know what you mean about having to want to draw for it to usually come out good. :/....XD or sometimes you want to draw, but have no clue what to draw and end up just scribbling, lolz. Anyways, but you have to sometimes just put in the effort and pick up a pencil and get started, you know what I mean? Sometimes you get inspiration from just holding a pencil and having a clean piece of paper in front of you. :P I know I do.

XD They're both really good. The tower on the first one is a bit....crooked? But it's not too big of a deal. As for the second one.....is it supposed to be an illusion? Because it looks....really....the perspective is off, and the telephone pole seems a bit random right being that it's right by the water XD.

the effect of the sun on the trees on the first one look really awesome. Overall, I think your first one is better than your second, just cause you blend different, simple colours, instead of just one solid one.

HopelessComposer

I like your girl sitting down, pixie. She's cute. =)
Her lower body is a little disconnected from her upper, but I like how you did her hair and the shading and stuff. It's pretty pleasing to the eye in general, for lack of a better way to describe it. She reminds me a little of Sawako from Kimi ni Todoke, which is an amazingly cute anime by the way. Go google it, because I'm sure you'll love it.

So yeah, good work!
Also, I notice that your hands could use a little work (like everybody else's, hahah). My advice to you would to be to just buckle down and fill up a few sketchbooks with realistic hands. It sucks really bad, but when you're done, you'll notice a good improvement. I filled up one sketchbook...I'm still not great at them, but I'm definitely a lot better now, and my anime-ish hands are a lot easier to draw now, and look ten times better. I'm gonna buy another sketchbook soon, and go at it again.

Next I'm gonna work on the neck/head area, I think. Really, if you're having a problem with anything, just practice it like crazy in a realistic style for awhile, and come back to the anime later. You'll notice it's suddenly a thousand times easier to get your ideas across.

And yeah, I know the advice I just gave you is so simple it borders on insulting, but I figured I'd remind you, hahah. I forgot that practicing was necessary for awhile, and I was extremely happy when I finally remembered again. X3

December 13th, 2009, 06:26 am
to HopelessComposer: i googled the anime, it looks really good i'm gonna read it once im done with my physics final T_T.

About the girl sitting down, that exact picture is from an manga i can't find anymore (can't remember the title since it was in japanese). I know the hands are messed up XD not easy to fix permanent marker mistakes. Anyways on to the body, i know it looks disconnected but try sitting down in the position she's in, she is leaning towards her knee. The way i shaded her probably caused a different illusion or something, since the real one was in regular shading.

I should be able to get more practice in since i FINALLY got into the art class so now i can double major! but yea thanks for the advice, i haven't been practicing as you can clearly see ^_^''''

to Mushyrulez: thanks!

That's why it's better to draw from life instead of drawing from other drawings, though. We all make mistakes, and by copying other people's work instead of copying from life, you're basically teaching yourself how to make the same mistakes the person you're referencing from makes. Believe me, her anatomy is definitely off. I'll do a quick paintover tomorrow if you want, to show you what I mean, but basically, her hips should be right where her elbows are - in this picture, they'd have to be about two feet lower than they should be to allow her to sit the way she is. I know it's hard to see, but that's because the artist you referenced has a very pleasant style, and it's hard to notice mistakes when your reference is so cute, hahah! XD

:/...Is it okay to draw from camera pics?...XD Honestly, I find it extremely hard to try to draw still life when everything is constantly changing. Especially when you're focusing on shading a landscape pic....

pixiepieberry
December 13th, 2009, 09:55 pm
well you don't have to learn from everything, you could just draw it because it looks pretty. I tried sitting in her position in front of a mirror i guess i see what you mean, can you guys try it and tell me what you think?

Drawing from a camera pic is fine. Its a good way to practice shading. you could always do it the old fashion way and come back everyday at the same time until you finish, but that takes ages.
However there are drawbacks on camera photos, like how there are things that your eyes see but the camera cannot capture.

HopelessComposer

well you don't have to learn from everything, you could just draw it because it looks pretty.
Of course drawing should be fun. =D
I use anime as reference too, when I'm trying to learn anime or when I'm just having fun, and that's fine. I was just saying not to expect perfect anatomy from all of your anime reference pictures, since even pros make mistakes. Because of that, drawing for life usually helps you learn faster is all. It's a cute drawing either way, heheh. =)

XD thanks RainingSilver.

:/...She could've drawn it in pencil then done it in marker...but more skilled artists, with careful mental planning, can draw with just marker. I'm practicing it in art right now....T_T It's not fun...

@pixiepieberry... If you don't mind, what's your ethnic background?
I could be wrong, but I'm going to guess pixie didn't grow up with kanji. It is indeed very neat, but it doesn't look like the work of someone who's been doing it their whole lives. Then again, I could be wrong. My roman-alphabet-handwriting completely sucks, after all. XD

Mushyrulez
February 4th, 2010, 11:21 pm
Actually, it looks like very normal chinese writing to me... the thing is, most people who write in chinese for a long time (e.g. my dad)'s writing becomes /extremely/ messy. Like, noone can understand it... so.. yeah -_-

pixiepieberry
February 5th, 2010, 08:15 am
I'm an ABC and if you don't know what that is then...i'll tell you. It's true that i did not grow up learning it that's why the characters look so stiff (then again i did want it to match the style of the phoenix). i could have done it without drawing it in pencil but i didn't wanna screw up its position next to the phoenix. Mushy's right about the messy/beautiful writing all the olds/pros can do it.

Anyways here is a rough draft of my first project for class =) its a cut out.

Mushyrulez
February 5th, 2010, 10:32 pm
Woah... what's the theme for that? For some reason, it looks like the bus is belching out a lot of smoke...

pixiepieberry
February 6th, 2010, 08:17 pm
hey Mushy have you ever been to the Voltage store? (^_^ i wanted to ask since you live in Vancouver)

the theme is about self aspect. so this is about me being a commuting student =)

Here is the final one its about 10in in diameter.

RainingSilver64
February 8th, 2010, 10:37 pm
:O...I see...a train...lighthouse...smoke(?)...a building(the college you attend?)...an American flag in the background...and...something to the right...

XD It's really cool.

And I don't know what ABC means...:\

(PS!!! XD Sometime this week or the next, I should have some new pics up...just need to find the time and get the effort to move my laptop to my bro's room to scan the pics...)

Mushyrulez

...If you were referring to something...I don't see the reference...

pixiepieberry
February 10th, 2010, 06:57 am
XD ok ok lets clear up some stuff here.

1) ABC = American born Chinese.
2) Train and bus are just a train and bus.
3) the building is the carillon bell tower at my school, it is also seen in an earlier drawing of mine.
4) There's no flag just stripes from the sun and place for stars to sit XD.
5) numbers represent time (clock)
6) circle shape means i do this every day like a cycle.

just really straight forward stuff no hidden messages.

i can't wait to see your new drawings Rainingsilver! =)

:O...Not what you see is what you get?...well...idk if that applies to this situation...XD

pixiepieberry

Took me far too long to realize that the second word is England. If you're going to tag words to be read, you should always choose a non-cross San-serif font. Otherwise, it looses meaning. Old English is hard enough to read as is, let alone overlapping and arching it.

RainingSilver64
April 2nd, 2010, 08:19 pm
I would've never known it said England unless M pointed it out...

XD But it's cool.

pixiepieberry
April 3rd, 2010, 02:32 am
Thanks for the tip, but most graffiti are quite difficult to read and the forms they take are far more complex than mine. Most people in the class were able to figure it out rather quickly but everyone is different since a couple couldn't figure it out at all. The letters form the shape country (if you turn it 90 degrees counterclockwise) that is why there are overlaps. Same goes for California (just turn it the opposite direction)

Oi, oi. There are a lot of bad drawings out there, too. Excuses like that aren't worth much; what's the point of having it say something if nobody can read it? Are you saying it isn't possible to make "England" more legible while retaining the shape of the country? The use of white highlights on England over a white background doesn't help matters, and the letter overlaps really confuse things, especially on the Ns. It might've helped things if you gave each letter a bolder outline, or maybe pure black shadows where the letters overlap? (So you can keep the font thin, while separating the letters.) Up to you, of course. For me, though, "England" is pretty hard to read.

Most people in the class were able to figure it out rather quickly but everyone is different since a couple couldn't figure it out at all.

but everyone is different since a couple couldn't figure it out at all.

a couple couldn't figure it out at all.
Doesn't that set off any alarms in your head?
Whenever someone asks me what one of my drawings is supposed to be, I want to shoot myself in the face.
For me, there's nothing I dread hearing more than "what is that?" Then again, maybe that's why you pulled out the "lots of graffiti is like that" card. :heh:

Anyway, keep working. It's not bad (love the dinosaurs), "England" could just stand to be a bit easier to read.

pixiepieberry
April 4th, 2010, 05:22 am
M, I apologize if I sounded mean or hostile. I did not intend it to be taken like that.

OI to you too HC, are you saying my England is ugly? just playin' haha. It is not an excuse, it is just a fact that I saw from not all, but many graffiti works. How is it an excuse if it is a fact? I looked through tons of graffiti and could not make out the majority of them. Even if it's not readable you can still use its other characteristics to identify it. If I uploaded a bigger picture where you can see all the little ones maybe it would have been easier. I never said it was impossible, I just chose to overlap them.

Thank you for the tips, I'll keep them in mind too when I do more. But hey you guys did manage to figure it out.
I understand there are many flaws with the whole thing but all I can do now is practice and get better. I'm glad you like the dinosaurs! During the critique in class, everyone kept fussing about the dinosaurs because they could not understand what they meant or what they were for. =\

HopelessComposer

It is not an excuse, it is just a fact that I saw from not all, but many graffiti works. How is it an excuse if it is a fact?
Because, like I said, you could just as easily pump out terrible drawings (you don't; I like most of your stuff) all day long and say "well, 90% of drawings out there are total crap!" Sure, it's a fact, but it doesn't really have anything to do with anything...basically, saying other people do the same thing as you isn't really a good reason to do what you're doing, since most people suck. That's why I called it an excuse. XP

I never said it was impossible, I just chose to overlap them.
And my critique is that overlapping them was a bad choice, because it makes it very hard to read without adding much flair to it - I think it would have looked just as good (and much more legible) without being overlapped.

But hey you guys did manage to figure it out.
Aye, we did, but again, I prefer to not have people scratching their heads when I show them a piece of my art. Art is supposed to say something; having a confusing looking drawing is analogous to speaking with a stutter. Sure, people will figure out what you're saying, but they'll be more inclined to be receptive to what you're trying to tell them if you speak in a clear, strong voice, right? =D

I understand there are many flaws with the whole thing but all I can do now is practice and get better.
Well, obviously you know that. You've gotten this far in drawing, so you must be doing something right. Good on you for that. =)

I'm glad you like the dinosaurs! During the critique in class, everyone kept fussing about the dinosaurs because they could not understand what they meant or what they were for. =\
What? I thought the dinosaurs were there to look awesome. They seem to be doing their job to me. XD

i personally had no problem reading (making it out) the word ENGLAND. i don't know what everyone is so... googa over this, but i do agree that most, if not all, graffiti is not easily legible (and some find that enjoyable). however... i never said i don't share the same frustration as the others' when i can't read it. like i said though, personally i had no trouble reading it (england). i don't quite know why you had to choose california and england.

are you gonna add more color to this project or is that it?

pixiepieberry
April 8th, 2010, 03:40 am
i'm glad you could read it! i find it fun trying to decipher what the words say like a big puzzle.

Just a personal reason why i chose california and england. I added colored arrows with dates on them to get the meaning across but i'm not going to upload a pic of it.
