which instrument should be donned ' best-instrument-ever '?
and why?

may sound a bit obvious, but the piano for me is best. it allows you a world of opportunites and can stand strong on its own. the sound emitted is beautiful and concise, straight to the point.

another thing important to me is that it leaves the mouth free, so you can sing also.

only problem is mobility, like with a guitar you could pretty much take it anywhere.

what do you reckon?

I don't think there is such a thing as The best instrument ever. However, my favorite are piano, cello, percussion (yeah, I like to play percussions !) and "contrebasse" (don't know the english word for this...well the big accoustic bass that looks like a cello :P).

These are mostly classical instrument but I like them outside this context... Just like a singer from Quebec called Jorane (doubt someone here knows her). She's playing cello, but in a rock sort of way.. :) hard to explain, but wonderful to hear.

Although i like piano, and i believe piano is ONE of the best instrument due to the fact that it can probably play a quartet piece, if it's been arranged properly. Piano can play up to 4 to 5 different "voices"(correct me if i'm wrong)

but sound wise i still think violin is the best instrument. There is no pitch limit.
You can smoothly travel from note to note without listener realizing it, on piano that's a very difficult thing to do...that's why there's a pedal.

just my opinion ^_^

I think that the piano is the best instrument for all the previously stated reasons.

However, I believe that the organ is actually called "the king of all instruments", or something like that. Probably because its sound can be so loud and massive.

well duh. The flute is the king of all instruments ^_^

why, you ask? because flutes always have the tune

this emoticon is playing the flute

This is like the movie "Drumline".

I feel that it is the piano, mainly because it was one of the firsts and it can play almost every emotion that a piece of music asks for.

Yeah, I love the grand piano, nothing beats it. You can play almost any songs on the piano, both melody and accompment, and that's one of the reasons why it's the king of all intruments.

Oh yes, grand piano. I meant to include that when I mentioned the piano.

i think the piano because it gives the basics of all instruments. it uses both treble and bass clefs. has all the notes every other intrument play (except percussion like drums). It is also the best way to tune an instrument. i like the baby grand piano... dunno why.... hehe... but grand piano is aight too!

Actually, if you think about it, the flute is a piece of crap.

It uses way more air than most other wind instruments, and it goes out of tune if you go high, low, loud or quiet

it's a cheap piece of shit (but it always has the tune  )

First off... The flute is one of the hardest instruments because of that reason... Therefore it gets it's counts from that

Clarinet is awesome but it just can't compare with the likes of the Bass Clarinet. (Maybe I'm just a little biased)

Seriously, Clarinet is the most versatile (huge range that covers just about everything outside of the bass range) of the woodwind instruments and sounds best overall. If it wasn't for that blasted oboe sounding so perfect in some places it would be a shoe in for king of the woodwinds.

i played clarinet for about 4 years...and i didnt like it o_O then i moved to saxaphone which i had been wanting to play since i was little...and after only 1 year my friend let me play her flute and i thought it was waaAy cooler than the saxaphone so i quit sax lol....its funny cuz i always avoided playing the flute because...i hated the idea of having it off to the side where i couldnt see what i was doing lol

I like that about the flute. you CAN'T see what you are doing, so you focus on the music, instead of looking at your hands.

mostly because the piano is so unflexible.......

and if ur really talented... i guess u could.. just maybe play more that one part at a time?

The Organ is the Lord of All Instruments. And yes, that term "King of Instruments," came from Mozart talking about said Organ. Even the piano is woefully inarticulate in comparison. You have control over so much, it's unbelievable. But, it's an absolute pain to learn how to play, so it's highly underated. And people don't like it because they've only heard old women attack it in local churches with nasally stops with a perpetual tremult on all the solo stops. So beautiful. So misunderstood.

Piano wins, if only because you can play melody and harmony at once.

Personally though, the cello and accoustic guitar are the most beautiful.

Gnomish
July 25th, 2004, 09:14 pm
You can play melody and harmony on violin along with other string orchestra instruments. All you need is a German Baroque bow and you can play up to 4 notes at the same time. :D

Maybe so, but most violin music is not meant to be played by itself, unlike most piano music. There are string pieces out there just for one instrument, but you usually need another instrument accompaniment (sp is wrong, I know).

:) Indeed, ahobbitinside. But Bach's Suites and Partitas for solo violin, along with the Locatelli Caprices and Paganini Caprices, they do make for a good solo violin repetroire. (sp) :D

I think the electronic synthesizer. It has midi formats of several different instruments and you can imput more instruments via floppy diskette. very versatile.

synthesizer isn't really good for an instrument as it is good for a mixer..

The King of All instruments is the Pipe Organ (not only cuz i play it but its an awesome instrument). It can have anywhere from 3 to over 1000 different sounds INCLUDING grand piano (if u really wanted for a Theater Organ), flutes, trumpets, etc. So u can pretty much cover all the bases.

Alfonso de Sabio
August 16th, 2004, 01:31 am
Yes, the organ wins. It woops the piano in terms of how many lines of melody/harmony you can play at once since you play with your feet. And its infinite tonal range makes it the most articulate. Easily the most articulate. It's the composer's instrument. They're just hard to come by in terms of home use.

Sondagger

Believe me I'm very serious about this. I think that your hands is the king.

1)It was the first instrument ever "made"
2)anyone can play it

Alfonso de Sabio
August 16th, 2004, 01:56 am
But your hands don't make notes. They make bangies. If you're going for the naturalist approach to instrument worship, I'd say the voice outweighs the hands.

B) ahh! the piano is the best! But i like a lot of instruments:

1. Piano
2. Harp
3. Flute

i've played the piano and flute, but i want to learn the harp!

Here I go again with the French Horn, but I personally think, out of the brass, that the French Horn would rule. I mean, if you've ever heard it, it has a rather good range, and sounds extremely beautiful when played well. Plus, it's a rather difficult instrument to play, considering the damn trigger being a pain. >.>

Now overall, I would definatly say the harp. It's just....magnificent ^-^

 ...I something similar to this on a different site...but I think that no instrument rules another, they all have different voices, so maybe once or twice I kinda mistakened my own instrument, the clarinet for an oboe and oboe for clarinet. Unwise indeed---but either way---instruments help a band each of them do...so there is no instrument that rules over another
but..........if my weirdness has gone haywire right this moment you'd see me screaming clarinet all the way! XD!

I think of the primarily monophonic instruments, the cello is the most expressive. I also love the harmonies you can play on it. Go listen to the Sarabandes from Bach's 6 suites and you'll see what I mean.

Piano. Because it can play jazz, and jazz piano is like the king of cool. Funk it up! Also classical sounds good. It's probably got the most songs written for it. think thats about it.

By the way violin does have a pitch limit. But you can play it in so many ways. I've had to bang it once and paly with the back of my bow

A mixer is simply something used to 'mix' multiple tracks of instruments together to a desireable configuration. A synthesizer is something that 'synthesizes' sounds given a bunch of specifications(attack/decay time, function combinations, filters, etc), and in effect is probably the most versatile instrument to date. I'd probably prefer the sampler, though, as it gives you the power to accurately reproduce and manipulate many of the existing instruments. Lots of the 'realistic' sounding orchestral music your hear on TV/games/movies are actually produced using professional level sample libraries such as those from Vienna Symphonic Library (http://www.vsl.co.at/) and East West/Quantum Labs (http://www.soundsonline.com/).

being able to play multiple parts doesn't make something the best instrument. by that argument, the organ is the best instrument, but it's rarely used.

^ Popularity doesn't make an instrument great either. You have to have a pure soul to play the organ tastefully and not try to show off, which is why it sounds awful so often.

FireIsFun888

All insturments have their own fans.. so there's really no best instrument like everyone has said.

But in terms of my own preference, I like the orchestra best... A violin (or cello, viola, flute, oboe, ect.) by itself can be alright, but when combined with all the other voices, it sounds much better. Or quartets, i like quartets.

For a solo instrument, i like the piano best, for all the reasons that everyone else said. But (for me) a piano cant compare to the grandeur of a full symphony orchestra.

Tho piano's not my fav, I would say it is the king. It can play the harmony and melody at same time w/o another accompanying instrument. And the sound is quite nice, and its loud enof for a big audience to hear. But still.. if piano was king, flute sounds b queen =P Flute's the best, sound so nice =D
