View Full Version : 'legal' mp3 downloading?

I'm considering buying quite a bit of music in the near future (moving out), and was wondering what legal online downloading companies everyone uses/might reccomend. I *don't* mean.... illegal ones (don't even want to mention), I'm just trying to get an idea of what's good, what's bad, and what's there.

So far, my very short list includes:
Rhapsody
Napster
iTunes
eMusic

but I don't know much about any of 'em.

..No, it costs money after a while, it just lets you listen for free to tracks for a few times.. more like 'sampling'.

and I'm not really looking for free, I'm looking for a less costly and hopefully more artist-supportive way of getting music...

all those you mentioned are pay to use... they're all media players but to get songs (new songs) (that you dont have... baiscally buying) it will cost money....

so... if you want to do the morrally right way... buy it...

otherwise just get it.... (actually its not that bad according to some people on some other fourms that i know... after all their just after your money.. .)_ and no... you dont get get caught....

i thought it was totally free. i guess it is more like sampling but its good sampling atleast its good quality. also when it comes to various types of music players i consider napster the cheapest (much more songs per dollar) and its also very legal. (they pay royalties)

Yeah, that's what I mean - I'm *intending* to *buy* songs that I like, I'm just trying to figure out which site is best for cost/artist profit/convenience, etc.

I just don't want to deal with CDs because I live in an environment where they get easily broken.

i mean if youre not that considered about morals then downloading it *cough * *cough* isnt that bad... after all they're just after your money.... not giving them money is all....
although it is somewhat bad.... this is VERY VERY common online....

not saying that its a virtue

and me being a christian i like to set good examples... but some prices are just ridiculous!!!

You could buy a CD, then transfer the songs onto your computer. That is perfectly legal, since it's for your own personal use. However, you're probably going for the online subscription so that you don't have to spend $15 on an album with only one or two good songs...

You might want to consider Yahoo! Music Unlimited...I personally have no experience with online music subscriptions; I'm merely listing this because my school cut a deal with them to give free subscriptions for every single student :D

Oh, and for those of you proposing illegal downloads, the law is the law, whether or not you like it. Unless you see something morally/ethically wrong with the law, you are supposed to follow it, regardless of whether you could get away with going around it.

Here is another way to look at it: Until you make your own CD that is good enough to be sold, who are you to judge how much someone should make off of the CD that they created? Only when you've gone through the process of creation yourself do you truly understand its value and its cost. Same thing goes for software. People tend to grossly underestimate the amount of work that goes into a program...this is an extreme case, but one person deduced that since a game took them a half an hour to beat, it must have taken half an hour to program o_O

I think he said he doesn't even want to *mention* illegal downloading, so let's get off that subject. I haven't really liked any of the downloading sites I've used so far, but I think iTunes is probably most convenient (I personally haven't used it, but what little experience I have gained with it through other people and stuff it seems a lot more convenient than some other products). There are TONS of other ones, but I think iTunes is probably the best one I've experienced.

Hm. And yes, you're correct that I don't want to deal with illegal downloading. I've heard bad things about Yahoo!, (convenience, mainly), and want to stray away from iTunes because I had some bad experienced with ipods breaking and apple not being willing to send me a replacement until much later.

And yet ... napster also has its troubles. eMusic looks nice, but too little song selection, Rhapsody looks okay, but it also suffers from selection.

Ehhh. I do like the napsterlinks feature though. Makes getting across to people what music I'm takling about easier. Overall, though, I tend to actually buy in CD's and not worry about 'bad tracks' - because I deal mainly with music from anime or music that my parents played while I was young (i.e. music that has specific meaning or memories to me)

:P

then i think you can only go with downloading FREE songs (some or most are not very good...)....
unless you pay....

online is good if your only going for a few songs......
or u can buy USED cds from EBAY or AMAZON for very cheap prices...

HE SAID HE DOESN'T WANT TO *TALK* ABOUT ILLEGAL DOWNLOADING, so let's not! I think maybe you should give up your grudge against apple, though, because I find the selection on iTunes to be very good. They have a lot of extra stuff along with the normal stuff.

Yeah, I think Apples is stupid, but their selection in iTunes, and their iPod, are great. I just hate their computers, that's all. Infact, when I get another job, I'm probably only going to buy off of iTunes. So, yeah. Choose iTunes. Pretty much every song it 99 cents. ^0^

Yes. If a friend stops by, you must immediately turn off your CD player until your friend purchases a license via an unfriendly automated phone system. ;)

OK, seriously, you can let your friends hear it as often as they want (such as via streaming audio), and you can let them borrow your CD. But a hard copy cannot exist in the hands of multiple people at the same time. Think of it this way: you can do with a music file what you can reasonably do with a book. You can read it, lend it to a friend, read it with a friend while you're together, or copy out some quotes to give to your friend or decorate some personal work. But you obviously are not allowed to photocopy every page of a book, staple it, and then give it to a friend.

Back on topic:

I think you should make a list of (possibly obscure) tracks that you would like to be able to find (perhaps including ones you have already but would want if you didn't have it). Then give this list to people with each of the services you're considering and ask them to check the availability of the songs on that list. Then you can choose based on which one has the most matches on the songs that you'd most want to have.

Some very good suggestions. I like the one about finding specific tracks and looking through each service to see if they have them.

And yeah, I'm thinking I really should stop being irritated at apple... From what I've heard they've been doing much better now... <sigh>

Ah well. Thanks for all your help!

You could try Morpheus. It's a completely legal program - it depends on what you download that would make it illegal or not. So... I guess the only foolproof way would be to check for copyright on everything you wanted b4 downloading -.-

So if you find that tedious and risky, and you don't mind paying a little... I would stick with itunes :)

the program is legal but what u download isn't thats the type of thing that the music industry will sue you for..

Morpheus sounsd good. And checking copyrights is something I can do. However one of things I am looking for is a way to download copyrighted stuff legally - not necessarily 'free'.

So ... another mark for iTunes, then. K.

Are there any songs (or programs tat let you download songs) that let you download songs cheaper than 99 cents each?

( i know that if you buy and album on itunes you save a bit)....
