But behind all the gore is a pretty decent story. A dark story, but a story none-the-less. I recommend it if you: a) don't mind watching someone throw a pen threw another person's skull with all the graphic detail, b) Don't mind watching naked women kill people, and c) like 2004 anime horrors (You know... The ones that are kinda like horror, yet they don't quite make the punch line.)

BTW, I want a set of Vectors. Does anyone know where I could buy some?

An awesome series, definitely one of my favorites.

I watched it a while ago, and i'm watching it again XD haha.
Tis' very gory, but the base story line, to me, is quite innocent. Oh and i'm really confused about the ending where...
Kouta comes out of the house, and sees a Nyu/Lucy look-a-like shadow on the door. Is it really Nyu/Lucy? because they don't explain, as the eps end there.
Theres only 13 eps right?

Well, there's an OVA (In the Passing Rain - Regenschauer) that falls in line with the story. Quite a nice add to it, if I might add.

I checked with the official website, and the website looks all innocent and pink. I can't believe they would hide so much horror from it, that if you actually went to watch the anime thinking its some cute drama, you end up seeing body parts and blood flying everywhere.

I actually grabbed a bowl just in case it was too much when I first saw it.

It wasnt that disgusting for me..just a lil blood and stuff.

only part I didnt like was when Lucy ripped up the soldier on the beach and her fight against...whatshername (the other good dyclonian)...made me cringe

@Siul: That would be Nana.

Moonlight_stalker
July 5th, 2006, 01:19 pm
Nana's story is so sad.

in the first ep you see her.. :'( she's like 'papa!' oo when she asks for his tie.. so sad.

Luis

I found Mayu's to be alot sadder...maybe cause stuff like that happens.

Oh yeah.. that was worse. i couldn't even begin to think how it would be like to go through that.

I watched the series thinking it was really incredible.. like a lot of people said. In the end, it was a great story and all (kinda gory too) but it just wasn't as good as I expected. I'd recommend it to anyone though..

Just watched the first episode. Pretty wierd, but in a good way. I really like the music too. And the artwork, like in the beginning showing seens around that house or wherever they're staying. I'm probably going to watch more later.

The art in Elfen Lied is superb, especially the OP. The story itself comprises of the manga up to chapter... 68 I think. It's pretty condesned so the manga has the story panned out more.

Starwind
July 27th, 2006, 06:16 pm
Is there more after chapter 68?

M
July 27th, 2006, 06:22 pm
It's 107 chapters spanning over 12 Tankoubon (volumes). So yes, there is a lot more...

Lol! exact same thing for me. I didn't mind it after awhile. I have to admit though, the first 10 minutes shook me pretty hard. The theme song is just amazingg!

Well, EL is a pretty good story, and the violence isn't that bad - maybe I'm too used to it because I used to play Unreal Tournament and stuff all day, lol.

There are way worse ones with violence level 10x higher than EL, and that's just lame and stupid. (Like shooting someone in the head with a bazooka and then blow his corpse up with a grenade that sort of shyt...)

Anyway, there is 1 thing that's very true shown in the series - technology is getting us nowhere, because in the end we lose our humanity to it...

Luis
September 11th, 2006, 03:23 pm
I disagree on the humanity thing, but thats better left to the denate thread.

Well, that's what EL is about, basically... technology getting out of control.

What I liked the first time I saw it: Lilium. I still love that song I'll love it until I finish Elfen Lied. There's about 5 OST songs that are Lilium variations... I like'em all!

... I'm on chpt. 9 now.

I thought it was more about humans need of power, and the destruction of anything they couldnt control.

the "girls" were change.
and the humans tried to keep them under wraps, hidden and only used them for their own purpose, partialy because they were afraid.

Maybe I should watch it again....

Agree. It's another way to look at it.

I absolutely adored the series. I haven't come across the manga yet but if I ever do I'll be buying it.

Gore and "It's not what it looks like!" moments aside, I loved Elfen Lied because it was so in-depth. A nice touch was learning the background of almost every character; in horrific detail such as the abuse Mayu endured and the way Lucy was treated in her childhood. I think a lot of the violence isn't just there as eye-candy though, I think it's supposed to be more of a psychological thing - such as the amount of expression in young Lucy's face as she's forced to watch her puppy being gradually clubbed to death or the screams of fear from a diclonius test subject followed by a sickening crunch as the humans scientists discover just *how* much kinetic force a diclonius body can withstand. Such things are meant to provoke feelings of disgust and sympathy; and therefore I believe a lot of Elfen Lied's appeal lies in its underlying themes and messages and questioning of humanity. In the anime (I don't know if they do in the manga but I would assume so) diclonius are often called monsters or heartless killers; but shown some of the things that humans have done such as Mayu's stepfather, the scientists or the brat boy from the orphanage, it makes you wonder just who the REAL monsters are.

University-grade analytical aside, I adored this series. I also especially love Nana Lucy and Mariko; and Chief Kurama just utterly rocks; particularly with the beautiful thing he did for Mariko at the very end of the series. And Wanta is just cute ^^; however I thought Kohta was a jerk up until he invited Nana to stay with them... he seemed a bit narrowminded. And Nana was just adorable! ^^; watching her reaction the first time she tasted ice cream was an utter heartwarmer.

I love my friends *sighs happily* they bought me the box set for Christmas ^_^

Did you catch lucy humming lilium at the beginning? A nice little tidbit, but it's very deep after you've watched the series.

And I LOVED the ending...ends the same way it started, with a gothic church bell, and the black, silent credits...

Luis

kuroneko...I totaly agree :)

BTW some of the info in there should be spoilered (is that a word?)

Kuroneko
September 28th, 2006, 04:01 am
Yeah, I caught that part at the beginning. In fact, I replayed the entire opening sequence of Lucy escaping-slash-slaughtering her way out of the facility with the opening theme of WeiB Kreuz playing in the background. That was just nuts :D And you've gotta love how eerie Lucy sounds as she's humming Lilium while she splatters those armed guards and Kurama's clumsy secretary across four timezones.

Spoilered isn't a word but may be argued as popular slang, I guess. And yeah, pretty much my whole post is a spoiler. However, given that this is an Elfen Lied discussion thread, anybody who hasn't seen the series and comes in here does so at their own risk. If they don't want spoilers then they shouldn't read the thread in the first place; especially given the philosophical nature of the anime in question. But in a moment of half-asleep compassion I did make sure not to say exactly what it was Chief Kurama did that was so touching. Personally I thought THAT was the biggest spoiler of them all so I simply didn't mention it.

Sigh.... as soon as I get a DVD drive I'm making a pair of AMVs for Elfen Lied; one to show the psychological side of it and another just to watch Lucy and the other diclonius kill things :D

I just finished watching it and I have to say that it is defanitly my favorite anime ever. Its so sad and has such a great story line, I've heard that the anime is different from the manga, the manga accualy has and ending, so im going to have to try to get that.

I thought Elfen Lied was pretty good. It could have done with the out-of-place sexual humor, and "Nyu's" horrendous and constant nyuing. If it weren't for those two things, it would've been a much better show I think.

Yeah but even more than that. I think it's about human nature as well. Even though Lucy ain't "human" but basically it's like if humans had those vector thingies I think they'd turn out the same way.

I haven't read the manga, but I might do that sometime since I really liked the anime a lot. Kinda gory but very good storyline.

I read 10+ chapters of the manga, I'm not sure about watching the anime~
Watching the opening made me crap myself in fear, so I dont think I can tank the rest XD
