Has anyone heard the songs from M. Mussorgsky's masterpiece, "Pictures at an Exhibition"? "The Old Castle" is my favorite movement of it... along with the "Promenade", of course...

I've tried making full orchestral pieces and seem to get overwhelmed with all the parts so I just resort to small ensemble/solo pieces instead. But this composition doesn't fail at all on the harmony or feeling of greatness you get just from listening to this... It makes me think of someone just arriving at the peak of Everest, or a queen making her arrival at a... well, promenade. :P

By the way... I bet you couldn't tell that the first few measures of the promenade alternate between 5/4 timing and 6/4 timing? Isn't that weird? :P Although at some parts it does sound like a beat is missing, to me.

Anyone have comments on this masterpiece?

Attached is an MP3 of the "Promenade"... enjoy! :D

The only time I've heard of old Modest is in Monty Python's "Decomposing Composers." Sorry.

I'm partial to "The great gate of Kiev" but that's mainly because I've played it. Really, my favourite Mussorgsky piece would have to be "Night on Bald Mountain".
