Was wondering what you guys think. (I bet since most of you love anime and manga you'll all vote no. :P)

Never heard the term "fads" before, but looking at your options, I would say that anime is something that will always be popular among people, just as it is now.

What, you mean spiked hair was only a fad?

Seriously, it may diminish in popularity and lose some mainstram appeal but there will still be a hardcore fans who will watch. There's a lot of stuff in anime that you just don't find in American animation (coherent storylines, adult themes, real storytelling).

No. It may seem like a "fad" now because it's only become popular here in the states recently, but the popularity seems to be increasing instead of fading out. Different animes shown might be a "fad" thing, but I see it as being more integrated into the US then just a passing thing. Besides, the real fans will still watch/read anime/manga regardless of whether it's still in the mainstream or not.

>< No, it's not a fad! I get really annoyed by this sort of thing because all my friends in England (except one) said that; "It's just a stupid phase they're into at the moment! They'll come back to their senses soon!"

No, because those people who love it will hold on to it for a long time. Some people may treat it as a fad, but most of those people are shallow. Another reason is that anime/manga art, principles, etc. is also used in some video games. The gaming industry is a big industry and growing rapidly.

I guess I see what you all mean. I must admit, I still pick up my Pokemon Blue cartridge on road trips and play it a bit. :) Remember Pokemon? There's an example of an anime (mostly VG/TCG) fad.

I'm not sure you can count pokemon as a complete fad. The games are all quite good and the new ones are still selling in the millions. The anime and trading cards were a fad but the things of good quality usually stick around.

I guess. :) I think that everyone is voting "No" because they either don't want to admit they might be part of a fad, or because they aren't looking wondering what it'll be like 20 years looking back @ anime in retrospect. :) Maybe it will still be around. It does seem like a fad to me, though. Not trying to offend anyone, but I honestly think it is. Yes, I like some anime, but I still think it's a fad.

I think crappy imitation animes done by western society are a fad but Anime has been around in Japan for a long time. I've even heard of a few from the 70's. I don't know when or how anime started but it's kept on going and it's a normal form of entertainment in Japan. I think it will become less popular to adapt the animes for western TV but I can definitely see people still importing anime 20 years from now.

How can anime be a fad. It's been around for decades. it's like saying.....cars are a fad...or somethin... :/

Since anime is a genre of video... I would say no, that it is not a fad or current trend. People even now watch and enjoy both old and new video of old genres.

Also, manga are just Japanese comics. If you think those are fading out... you're horribly mistaken.

I never said they were fading out. :P

anime is something that's been in for ages.. and it'll stay that way, as a form of visual entertainment, just like the movies

I'd like to say 'no', but I'm thinking that because I'm such a fan it would be a biased opion. But I don't really believe the answer is 'Yes' either....

It has been around for a very long time, and i believe it still will...not as sure about anime though, that is the only aspect that may be a fad, but aslong as fans introduce new younger fans were fine

Good points. :D

But you all say it's been around for ages... Well, it has... in Japan. It's only been around in the U.S. as something popular for a few years now. (Probably nearing 10 years or more?)

In America, yes, it is a fad. I mean, to us it means a whole lot more, but other people who like it will probably forget about it.

That's a confusing statement right there. Do you mind elaborating on it?

I think Hayama means that the mainstream audience will probably stop caring much about anime, but to the hardcore fans of anime on this forum, it won't be going anywhere, They'll continue to buy anime and download unlicenensed anime as long as it's available because they recognise it's just another form of art.

like Kou said, anime has been around for quite some times, there are even anime/manga classes at college. I don't think it's a fad at all. Anime isn't like a stupid cartoon, it conveys some of the same feelings that normal TV shows do. Comedy, sadness, etc. Alot of animes aren't for children at all. Take Serial Experiments Lain for example...weird/kinda bloody sometimes >.>

The people who will start calling it a "fad" in a few years are the ones who were just watching the kiddy anime on "Toonami" on CN, I think. Most people who watch *real* anime will probably continue to be fans for a long time. Like me! :P I know serveral people in their mid 20's or early 30's who have been watching anime for years!

I don't think so, really. It's really only the 'fad' anime that dies out, like Pokemon. Even though I like YuGiOh, it's KIND OF a fad anime, but not really if you watch it till the Egypt Arc.

Besides, anime storytelling is what keeps it going. American cartoons only last so long, but if anime was just a 'fad', then DBZ and Sailor Moon and Kenshin would most certainly not have lived as long as they did.

Then again, I'm just a rabid otaku who doesn't want the anime fandom to die out anytime soon. ^.^

Anime can't be a fad... the world of anime is still constantly evolving... think of all the "old" anime classics, as well as all those new ones that are coming in... new styles of drawing... etc... this can't be a fad. *haha, I sound like someone in denial? ^^''*

Well, some anime is like a fad. I remember Pokemon used to be a big hit, but now, I don't know many people that follow it.

But to say that anime is a 'fad' isn't really right. It's too widespread, and is a viable alternative for popular cinema and stuff. The day may come when anime dies out, but I think that's a long way off yet.

But that said, it does seem to be focused mainly on people aged 13-23. If it is but a passing fad, it has a whole generation captivated.
