How much can a composer get as a starting wage. I know they can become millionaires if they're world famous but for the ones who doesn't make it as far, how much do they get paid average annually, anyone know?

most composers don't become world famous until they die... then they have no need for all the money

What would make me poorer: being an astronomist or a composer?

Composing is usually a side job of musicians, most composers are either: orchestrators, music teachers, music adjudicators, and etc... as their main job. Although film composer is a different story, but it's hard to get into this career unless you have some experience in music or unless you're lucky and someone notices your talent.

what about small commercial companies? Do they pay you on an hourly base or per music base?

Music base of course (duh), a composer can compose pieces for years and you think the company will pay them that much? Unless there's a deadline, but it's more likely music base, at least from what I know.

probably astronomer because it is probably not very good pay in the first place, then out of that payment take everything you need for the job- i.e. training funds etc you wont be left with that much.

@Original Question -

Mainly, a "compoer" doesn't make much, but being hired for popular movies, games, shows, dramas, commericals (etc.) I think you can make a pretty decent wage.

Just as a high-class musician you can make an AVERAGE of $70k a year, depending on where and what you play too. x_x
