"What if roller skates had high power engines that enabled the skaters to do stunning new tricks that defy gravity? What if you saw a beautiful girl effortlessly glide through the air with them? To Ikki, this is reason enough to secretly borrow a pair of Air Treck skates, and step into an underground world filled with gang fights and strange customs. Enamored with high-flying stunts and the flirtatious Simca, Ikki forms an Air Treck gang of his own and starts a life of fighting rival gangs and flying over the rooftops, chasing the girl always one kick ahead of him."

What do you think? I think it's awesome, I'm on episode 5 already!

It's more than cool, it's awesome!

My favorite character so far is Agito/Akito... I mean a guy that wears a straightjacket just has to be cool, no? ^_^

oooh there's a thread on this! I've watched the first series (it stops at episode 25 right?) Yeah it's well cool! I like Agito/akito too! Love the way he says "f*ck". He actually sounds cool when he does it unlike in real life.

haha. They could have done without the ecchi stuff, but it adds to the humour. what really surprised me was the..

mini-yaoi scene

it was ok, exept for the total disregard for the laws of physics, and sometimes cheezy scenes.

i think you have to assume that the skates are going at really high speeds. Enough run up speed to give enough inertia to scale a vertical wall.

it was stated that the average speed of the skates is 80 km/h. thats 22.2222222 meters/second. mass in kg (assuming he weighs 160 pounds = 72.5747792 kilograms). times speed in meters per second (if my memory serves me right) = inertial force. 22.2222222 x 72.5747792 =

1 612.77287 Kgs of inertial force. thats the weight of a good car. the skater would be subjected to 1.6 tons of inertial force, or 22.22 Gs. if he was to want to climb a wall. (the average breaking point of the human shin (the shin is what would be subjected to the most force) is 4-5 Gs, or an impact force of 360 kilos.)

if the skater was going slower, lets say something that inflics a humanly possible impact to withstand (say 5 Gs), he wouls only have 360 kilos of inertia to help him climb the wall (if his shins hold, i give a 50/50 chance of that) now he needs upward force, produced by the rotary effect of the weels, to overcome his weight, so he can go upwards. he can only push back on the wall to create enough contact friction so that the weels can actually push him up the wall. seeing as hes gotta use the portion of the inertia equal to his body weight per meter upwards, his inertial force driving him against the wall would be depleted after 5 meters. he would still be going 5 m/s at that point, but he would have no contact with the wall. although he would probably get another good meter or two out of that, ITS STILL NOT POSSIBLE TO DO THE STUFF THAT THEY DO.

ALSO. the skaters seem to be able to jump unnaturally high/far. although the speed given by the skates would make them go farther is the were to jump, it would not give them any more hight then they can produce with their legs. lets say our skater is able to jump 1.7 meters high (thats f***king high) without the use of skates, i dont think they would be able to fly 37something meters. (there are many instances of the skater leaping ninja style without any speed or running start, and the heigh that they obtain makes no sence at all whatsoever.)

ALSO. with all the power in the skates, and seeing as how the skate weels are not much diffrent from our own, it would be almost impossible for them to retain enough friction with the road at those speeds. its like fitting road bike tires on a motorcycle. you wont get enough grip to do much.

now as a final note, physics was a long time ago, so im pretty sure i made mistakes, but im pretty sure i got the ROUGH idea of whats possible or not. also, i want to say that even if it wasnt possible, The anime was still cool and awesome. (exept for those cheezy parts, but meh)

those are my two cents.

hahaha! I didn't look that deep, but you gave me a good insight never to try that XD

Yeah, I was thinking about how skateboarders manage to go up the vertical bit from a half pipe quite far with not that much speed. I didn't think about the jumping bits though.

Do you reckon they'll ever make skates like that in the future though, or would it be considered too dangerous (if somehow there's enough grip)? Could it become an extreme sport?

i do think some people will have powered skates in the future, however they probably will look different then normal skates, because they must have a housing for a powersupply, motors, a microchip to coordinate the mortors, the weels will have to be larger to be able to keep grip during acceleration/deceleration. im thinking of something akin to small mortocycles on each feet, but the chassis would be an aerodynamic boot not unlike a skiing boot.

im pretty sure in the next 10-20 or so years well go on youtube and look at what happens when a bag of meat hits the pavement and/or obstacles at speed rivaling sport cars.

i dont think they will give super-jumping abilities or stick to walls spiderman style.

however for the jumps, a hydrolic or pneumatic suspention system might be able to add a couple feet to the tricks in a dirt byke-like course, and there will probably be skates desinged specifically for different purposes. like the aforementionned motorcycles on feet would be used for speed, like a sport/racecar, and the other one would brobably look like a monstertruck that marrieed a dirt bike.

if they do create a all rounder model, it probably wont go faster then 30km/h, since its about as fast as you can safely go without risk of losing grip when doing maneuvers. those will prolly look more like normal skates, but the wells will prolly have to be a bit wider.

thats just my view of what could happen.

Air gear is righteous and the first volume can be ordered uncut so you can get rid of the pesky crows

yeah there is more in the manga but they will never put it in video. Too bad. Partly because it gets way more henai-ish. they have more roads though including the jade, bubble and... the new Whirlwind road!!!!

that'd be a real shame, since the actual action was good in anime form. Can't they just put more crows on?

no, i wish they could but they decided not to. the bubble road starts out with a move called the "censored pose" and ikki becomes even more perverted.
