LAtely, I've heard that youtube is getting rid of all anime/manga related videos. What are your thoughts on this? IF I'm wrong, someone please correct me.

I think it's fine. Youtube is a free network and they don't want to deal with any legal issues. So, I don't see any problem. Don't complain...

Youtube's for personal movies anyhow.

Well YouTube tried to get rid of it earlier by adding a 10-minute rule making all videos 10min.+ to be deleted and most of these were anime episodes and movies. YouTube users found another way to bypass the rule by cutting the episodes in parts. SO what I'm trying to say is, I don't really mind that YouTube is deleting episodes cause sooner or later, someone will find a way to keep uploading videos without the risk of deletion. (Sorry for long paragraph) :)

Well, it is illegal after all to view licensed anime without holding a license (TV network contract or Region Specific DVD). I see nothing wrong with them removing it, though I would like to see them do more of what Google Video is doing with anime related videos (a pay per month service with professional uploads) rather than to completely remove them.

I mean, what's two dollars a day for previewing unlimited anime videos quickly? It beats going out to the store and buying a 30 USD dvd that you may not like.

That explains alot... As much as I wish it wasn't true, I understand why.

My brother is so sure that the license only affects thing that are licensed spacificly in the country of veiwing. In other words if you post up the Japanese version its okay.

true?

Yeah I understand, but the thing is that many people don't have paypal so they can't pay for a service. Some people *cough*me*cough* don't have paypal. The only other way that I know is to use a bittorrent to download them but it is so frustrating. Sure, I watched anime all the time on youtube, but I don't see a reason to delete them all. Also, if the anime companies wanted to spread their episodes, then they could post them on their own site where people have to signup or something like that. All I know is that I'm going to miss the anime.

To establish my credit, I've read both US and Japan copyright laws in terms of digital media.

The term Licensing is used to denote if it has publishing rights in your region. An anime when it first comes out is called "Unlicensed" in the US, because companies over here have yet to determine if they want to produce it for the mass public. But over in Japan it is licensed; it's illegal to redistribute the anime. It's still illegal for people in the US to download the anime by Japanese law, but I doubt you'll ever see a Japanese company come over to the states to sue an American for downloading a 9000 Yen series that already wasn't available to them yet. In fact, most companies like fan-subs, because the fan-subs advertise the series for producers and fans alike.

When an anime becomes licensed in the US, it's produced to the public, and is then considered illegal. There's a clause stating that any and all forms of the anime, once licensed in your region, is illegal to possess, unless you have a license. Therefore, fan-subbed anime, that has a licensed version out for your region, is illegal to have in possession. The only way to make it legal is to purchase the actual DVDs.

HERE'S THE KICKER! Let's say that you downloaded an entire series before it was licensed (like Full Moon wo Sagashite). Suddenly it becomes licensed. Does this mean that you have to destroy all copies you have of that in your possession? Or, if I want to keep the fan-sub, am I forced to purchase the series?

They don't define that very clearly in either of the two countries. All they say is that you have to cease all distribution after it has a license in your region.

That's the general outlook on anime licensing.

Simple Version:

You're safe until it has licensing announced in your region. Once that happens, all forms of the medium is technically "illegal" and you can be pursued by Federal Police for copyright infringement, theft, along with several other infractions.

Yay. I hope that's the case so I don't have to delete all of my anime. One question though, is the licensing announced state by state or is it a one-country sort of thing?

Per region. They are as follows:

0 No Region Coding
1 USA, Canada
2 Europe, with France, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Arabia, Japan and South Africa
3 Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Borneo and Indonesia
4 Australia and New Zealand, Mexico, the Caribbean, and South America
5 India, Africa, Russia and former USSR countries
6 Peoples Republic of China

You typically won't see any other versions (there's airway and 9 which is typically used by archival backup software for region free)

You can check if an anime is licensed through www.animenewsnetwork.com or by going to the Grand High Licensing List (http://www.animeondvd.com/licenselist/).

well i don't think the part about not having it licensed in the country you are in really is a factor they consider...since they've been taking out japanese stuff anyway cuz some jap companies apparently complained to youtube...so it got purged taht one time...personally i don't care since...i get my anime via legal methods (sometimes), but once something is licensed...i usually am like "ok i'll just wait for it to be sold" since i'm that kind of person...

I'm impatient and always would rather just watch it. I mean youtube advertises for the anime companies. If one person sees it (like me), I tell others and they go watch it and start buying merchandise from the companies. Other than that, I don't see much harm done to the companies.

pocky.

one thing tho is companies don't want to take teh chance, think of how many people download it without having to pay and translate that into lost revenue for the company. these are people trying to make the most money they can, and having illegal downlaods like that where people can jsut resort to that and have it for viewing for free as opposed to having to pay for a DVD of it, and that can actually add up to a sizeable amount of money, that's one reason why this is taken seriously.

Protip: You don't need to use every smilie the forum has in your posts. Also, spell out your words. It's kind of annoying when people can't bother to spell out full words. Welcome to the forum, though!

Youtube isn't the only site to host illegal anime. They are just channeling the crowd to other video hosting sites then. Hohohoho.
