I want to be able to sit down and play a mood, say if I'm mad, i'll play something in a minor or something. I don't think there are any real melodies that go on, it's just something that can go on and on that just fits the mood.. does anybody know what i'm talking about? Well if not, i'll try to explain it better, but if you do, then can you lead me to some books or help me a bit on how to just sit down and play? My piano teacher doesn't know too much about composing and I don't know where else to turn to..

As for where I'm at, I know quite a bit of music theory and i can sight read very well, but can't compose or anything if my life depended on it lol.

Mood music, sounds 20th century contemporary to me...yewwwwww. My opinion, those music has no melody, no harmony, just noise. Although some 'noise' they make sounds awkwardly interesting.

Also...

You're playing mood music man, you don't need to know anything to do that. Just pull up a chair and hit the keys as you wish. I started doing that shit when I was 3years old and I didn't know theory or how to compose or even the word 'compose'. The music had "dosomiso," and "tisoreso" as chords and that was about it.

What were you expecting people to tell you? Play A-B-C-E with an Aminor chord accompaniment and move on to Dminor? If that is what you were looking for, have you ever tried the library under Piano Music?

lol maybe you should find somebody that actually has a solid professional music education ;)

sometimes, you don't even need to focus on trying to play a melody...i know from personal experience it's quite easy to sit at a piano and play something, but it dissapears once i try and get it on paper.

also, you don't have to worry about composing to a standard. i think a large 'block' for composers is trying to hard to "stick to the rules"...

You could always just learn a huge amount of music...eventually, you'll be able to call up a piece for every occasion :P

Mood music is also common in some Debussy music.

Sure he has melody, but some of the time it's just an atmosphereic piece.
