Why are there still people who think you can learn a complete language by sitting behind a computer?

Apperantly...heh yeah I tryed to learn spanish on the computer since I recived it as a gift...seems talking to hispanics helped more- and was more helpful too ^__^ I learned how to ask where the fridge was and cuss someone out-- ALL in the same day! So go out and learn your languages! ^_~

(p.s.- Go to a store and buy some books, get a CD that may help, or just search it up on google....or speak to many Japanese people.)

The only program that I know that actually works is a Katakana and Hiragana trainer, which you can usually learn in a few days without any aid from software.

Also, I will teach you something. There are two ways to learn a language. One is total/instant immersion. This means moving to the country for a while. This method is the only one where books and self-teaching actually works.

If you cannot do this, which is likely, you'll need to take a school course on it.

These are the only two ways to really learn a language. Of course, I you could learn by googling "Japanese Language Help". The first entry is quite useful, but only on a self-taught level (read the above).

If you're still determined, here (http://www.sabotenweb.com/bookmarks/language.html) is a link to many good sites.

The real question is: do you need to know how to speak Japanese?
No. No you don't. I bet you'd think it'd be pretty cool (seeing as we're all Japanese multimedia fans here) but you shouldn't trouble yourself over it, learning a new language is harder than you think.
For example, I have to speak French only because there are a great many French-speaking people in Canada, otherwise I would have ditched the silly course and its infinite irregular verb conjugations ages ago (if it weren't for the fact that it is an easy credit).
And it is a known fact that learning a language is easier when you use it on a day to day basis with people that actually speak the language. This, I know from experience, and I beg you to differ. Thus, my French is not as good as my native tongues because I don't usually talk to people in it. See here, you live in "West Caldwell, New Jersey"; I doubt there are any Japanese speakers there to lend you a helping hand in conversation.
