View Full Version : Composition of the Month Awards

Last month we got to a rough start, but we made a foundation for future CMA contests. Last month's theme was a good one, but it may have started a little too late for some people. So this month's theme will be right from the beginning. I took a look at the list and decided to take the next highest theme, which was the Beginning/Ending Theme (if you look back, you can predict what will be next month's theme).

To be simple, the Beginning/Ending Theme would be a main theme you would hear throughout an RPG, or the theme you would hear at (obviously) the beginning or ending of the game. Beginning and Ending Themes in Anime are also good examples. This is a very versatile theme, which leaves room for creativity.

Again, your compositions should be submitted in this format:

The deadline will be August 25th. Good luck!
Remember, keep conversations out of this as much as possible.

Deadline is the 25th, but today is the 20th . . . *sigh* I guess that's another contest down the drain =(

Have you started composing for the contest yet, Alphonse and other members who are interested?
I would actually want to join, only if Michael would extend the deadline a bit, say, the 27th, so that we still have a week to work on it. I don't expect to win anything though, (Noir's composition last month is amazing). I just want to get some motivations to compose new songs.

Me? My song will be done sometime in September. I don't go by the dates of the competition. If I happen to finish in time, then maybe I'll submit (depending on the theme's criteria). Other than that . . . :heh:

Another extention... Ya know, this is getting really hard be making these contests "themed." Fine... You have until August 31st. -_-

And to get things started, since I don't plan to compose anything new:

Title: Stacy's Theme - Everyday (Orchestral Reprise)
Composer: Michael R. Yago
Link: http://www2.hawaii.edu/~yagomich/compositi...tralreprise.mid (http://www2.hawaii.edu/~yagomich/compositions/stacystheme-everyday_orchestralreprise.mid)
Best Heard Using: Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth (since I'm still having trouble finding good soundfonts...)

The "Best Heard" is referring to your sound card and what is set for MIDI music playback. You can go to your Control Panel to change it. I'm only saying this because it sounds REALLY BAD in Creative SB Live! series, which is the default for most new computers...

Alright, I'm going to try hard to finish before the 31st, but I don't like being rushed even though I'm used to it, heh . . . so what do we have here? 1 confirmed entry, 1 possible entry . . . and is that it? No, can't be!

Composer: Christian Erhamo

You soundcard won't matter, mp3s sound exactly the same on all computers.

wow, so many participants now! Cool, I will do my best on it also. I've got the theme written down yesterday, now it's the accompaniment part.

I'm thinking of a "Solo Piano" theme to be really simple for next month. Anyone against that?

I refuse to participate in these contests anymore... :(

I quite dislike the "themed" idea...

From what I gathered, there won't be a theme this CMA, so you could just join with any composition.

michael

This month's CMA is "Beginning/Ending" Theme (look at first post). Next month is still in the air since less people have been getting involved. There might ne no theme for next month, so don't feel discrouaged.

 But you submitted a character's theme, and not a opening/ending theme.

Title: Moments
Composer: Selinity

I've been having problems with my compositions latly, so if anyone would like to make a suggestion on what is missing or what is wrong with this piece, "Moments"
please DO! Well here's my new song, that still neesd to be fixed, if anyone does THINK so.

Darren

Selinity, I THINK,
1. the intro is a bit too slow, SUGGESTION: a. use a different melody for intro (personally I prefer melody start from the 7th measure). b. accelerate it by changing the tempo.

2. measure 4 ~ 6: the chords sounds a bit hollow; I realized that you left out the 3rd in each chord. IE, I assume the first chord is A minor (ACE), but you left out the note C. and the second chord G major (GBD), which again, I can't find the B... etc. SUGGESTION: add a 3rd on them. If it sounds odd, then do some chord inversions. I also had this trouble when I am composing for this month's CMA, but I admit that even if you don't change it, it'll still sound OK- for casual audience.

3. measure 7 ~ 11: There's nothing wrong with it, but somehow my Finale plays it really fast, and it sounds great! So you might want to experiment with the tempo a bit.

4. measure 8: the second chord (B diminished) sounds odd in my first hearing. SUGGESTION: change it to D minor 7, the fourth inversion (with C at the bass).

5. the ending is abrupt, I THINK. I am not good at making endings also :heh: , so no suggestion.

Hope that helps. need to go back to my composition now--

hey, thanks for the comments, :sweatdrop:

problem is, i never took piano lessons and so i'm not really that advance like you, with the musical terms. But I understand some, which I hope i do...

O wells, well here's my new and improve one of Moments. You're right, playing this song in a faster tempo DOES sound good! Hey thanks for the advice. Maybe I'll compose better songs next time, ehehe. ^__^ There's just a problem to it, but i don't know, tell me please if it is too fast r some notes are not in thier proper place...turth is i don't know my scales! :heh:

Hey guys... umm... comments are for the thread I'll create later (please read the first post about conversations!). Selinity, which one do you want to enter?

Noir7, there are a lot of games which have a character's theme as the main beginning/ending theme. For example, FFIII/VI's ending theme was all the character's themes put together. ^_^

Title: Naku ending theme
Composer: Darren Li
Link: see attachment

thanks to ichigo forum and Michael for providing me the motivation to compose this piece. :P it is a really nice experience ----though frustrating (got stuck in lots of places, and wasted lots of time simply listenning to it mindlessly)

Elite,: I increased the volume slightly for the viola of the 1st measure as well as the cello in the second piano solo part, hope that will bring down a bit of the shock.
