I have read the Masque of the Red Death. I think it's the only short story of his I've ever read... It was in my ninth grade english textbook, lol.

The one that I most like is "Three Sundays in a Week". Very cute and funny for a Poe story XD

The Tell-Tale Heart isn't a classic for nothing.

I like "To Helen," as well as these. And there's one, I forgot the title, it's like a dream land. Really cool stuff. This guy rocks. :)

Yeah, Ive like read "The Masque of the red death" just like last week. Its sort of weird, but it gives a central meaning to it like I does not matter who you are or where you go, death will come upon you. I've read Eldorado. I know what the raven and the tale-tale heart are about, but I have not read them. I read another story by Poe, but I can't remember the name, It had something to do with a golden scarab and codes to finding treasure. Ohh whats that name? Can anybody help me out here? It is a story by Poe I know that because I read it last year.

The Golden Bug maybe?

Yes, thats the one! At least someone knew of it. When Poe wrote that book, do you think he was on drugs at the time, because I saw that one to be less frightening or weird from his others. But maybe he was I don't know for sure. They say he wrote like everything while he was on drugs or something another.

That was a rumor started from a rival of his.

It was? I did not know that. Do you happen to know who his rival was perhaps? I'm just curious.

I don't think his work was drug-induced. Now, Alice In Wonderland...now THAT'S another story. The giant mushrooms and opium-addicted caterpillars might got me wondering.

OT: *glomps pianocrazy* OMG where have you been?

Lol, haven't checked this thread in a while...

Well, its just that all my teachers in the past have said he was on drugs. But besides the drug part (or rumor or whatever), his works are really good. Not that I'm saying that his works were not good or anything, I was just saying what my teachers have said to me. Now come on, if read some select stories that he made, you can tell he was on something now. Just look at "The Raven", "The Tell-Tale Heart, and "The Masque of the Red Death". All of them not really the best stories with happy endings. But yeah you guys are probably right about him not taking drugs, I just wish for proof is all. Because when you have been reading great literature with college, qualified teachers , its a little hard to believe people from people I don't know (well I mean Physically, in real life, I just don't know your character). But Im sorry if I have offended you guys in any way, its just that I really want to know who was his rival that had spread rumors about Poe ,that he had taken drugs to improve his writing abiltity, which as Septermagick has told me.

Now what I am not saying is that he was a bad writer for doing drugs, I am not saying that. But that he might have been under the influence while he was writing, ok. Now if you want to prove me wrong, then do some research and prove that he was not taking the drugs, alright. Or you can just find out who his rival was and I'll believe you even if someone else says he wasn't. And last Im not trying to hurt your thread, Im just looking for the truth from his life.

I wish you had asked me earlier. My teacher has the book and I'm on Winter Break as of today. *droops head* I just remember it was the guy he left in charge of all his works in his will.

Ok, good. Now I just need the name. Also I just got out for break as well. My english teacher has audio tapes of his works and we listened to "The Masque of the Red Death", it was pretty cool. Oh and just for the dramatic effect she even turned of the lights, and she also has this Dr. Pepper neon light clock. So when she turned of the lights, the red light that came from the clock went on the ceiling, so it looked like the red death. Yeah, that was cool.

I've liked all the works i've seen so far, but Annabel Lee has to be my favorite.

(I'm not quite sure if it's off topic, but has anyone seen Lenore by Roman Dirge? It's a comic/ flash video series that i'm pretty sure was based of Edgar Allan Poe's poem.)

This is just a smidge off topic but I once had a dream where I was Edgar Allan Poe and wrote a poem about this ghost dog... I do love his work though.

He is the only writer/poet that i am a fan of lol. Rememorized Annabel Lee 2 years ago(7th grade) and fell in love with it, probably cause of the devotion of the man in the poem. Then during 8th grade, read all his poems and read around 20 of his short stories.

Btw, eap's death... its really weird. Do u guys think he might have planned it?

His death is rather strange, but no I don't think he planned it. I'm kinda suspicious of Rufus Wilmot Griswold, but I guess we will never know for sure. It would be so awesome to visit his grave, wouldn't it?

It's really funny, because I'm not really a fan of Poe, but I have a lot of respect for him. He was a brilliant writer. I liked The Tell-Tale Heart best because it was such an apt portrait of insanity. Sort of creepily accurate. 'I'm going to kill you and your freaky eye!'

XD Okay; it wasn't phrased like that, but I'm not the literary genius here. I've read bits and pieces of his other works, like The Raven (one of his most renowned works obviously) but they just didn't jump out at me. I suppose I'd like to read some of his 'Detective Stories' - but they're at the end of a long list of other novels I'd prefer to read.
