Christmas Composition Contest Competition

Beat that title =)

As requested by a lot of the members, there will be a Christmas contest this year aswell. This contest will continue in ordinary fashion, with a public voting poll after Christmas. The theme is, hold your breath here - Christmas! You are free to compose anything that you relate to this anual event, whether it's something sacred or simply seasonal. The choice of instruments, lenght, and genre is up to you.

The contest's deadline is: December 22nd (GMT+1)

Good luck!

Hysterico: This is my way of depicting x-mass shoping, going from jolly and nice to hecticŽ, hysterical and a general pain in the ass as "D-day" draws nar.

@_@

That was fast...been working on one already, have we? Well, that was very nice, and I like the humor behind it. But gosh...it was pretty short.

*goes to work on submission*

Does making an arrangement and/or variation of a christmas song count?

Al
December 5th, 2006, 01:55 am
I don't think so, because then it wouldn't be an original composition by you.

Noir7

Indeed, no arrangments allowed.

Does it have to be in mp3?

what i mean is cause i can only record the MIDI playback from my FINALE notepad the free version.. :S

Maestrosetti
December 6th, 2006, 12:08 am
In any case, your best bet would be either MIDI or MP3, as pretty much anyone can view those formats. Not everyone has Finale Notepad though, so I wouldn't recommend .MUS. There are plenty of people here who have Finale who can convert your Notepad file to MIDI or even MP3, so don't worry about that.

But there are a few people roaming around with Finale 2007 or similar x_x I'm using Finale NotePad 2007, so... yeah. I refuse to put it in NotePad 2005 because the instruments sound different, and it would affect how my song sounds :\

Milchh
December 6th, 2006, 11:59 am
*If you have a version of Finale NotePad 2007 (or any Finale) send me the .MUS. I can convert it into a .MIDI for you.*

Noir7
December 6th, 2006, 04:19 pm
@ajamesu: MIDI instruments sound different on different computers depending on which MIDI-template/font they have, therefore Mp3 is preferred. Those who submit in *.mus format will simply have to deal with the fact that not all people will listen to it.

@shenzu: What Maestrosetti said.

Thank you, just another quick question..

Does it have to be a song where there's a voice singing? cause I don't know how to do that..

Maestrosetti
December 7th, 2006, 10:41 am
No, you're not restricted to anything like that.

ajamesu
December 8th, 2006, 12:47 am
Um, I have no idea whatsoever how to convert midi to mp3, much less .MUS to mp3, unless I use my keyboard to record an mp3, but I've never done that before, and I don't have the necessary equipment. Plus, theres the possibility of a mistake (sixteenth note runs in the harp x_x)...It would sound nicer if I used the instruments on my keyboard, though... And, no one would notice my mistakes on notation xD I'll try to get the equipment...

Maestrosetti
December 8th, 2006, 10:23 am
You don't need to do that yourself.

Refer to Mazeppa's post:

*If you have a version of Finale NotePad 2007 (or any Finale) send me the .MUS. I can convert it into a .MIDI for you.*

If you make a MUS and send it to him, he can make a MIDI out of it.

Might it be a stretch to ask if somebody is willing to make MP3's for all of us? i.e. those people with audio mixers?

Noir7
December 9th, 2006, 01:06 am
Lol, do you have any idea how time consuming that would be? Audio mixing, as you put it, is not just about converting a MIDI > Mp3. It actually takes (me) muuuuch more time to mix the song, than to actually compose/notate it. So no-no, noo noo!

Perhaps I should throw my hat into this competition  Although I don't think I have time to meet the deadline =P *does music math and will get back to this decision later*

Well, I might be able to RECORD a .mp3 file with my Finale for people who are willing to PM me--but don't alloy me to mix it and make it prettyfull.

Hmm... If it is allowed by Noir7, I can run a few MIDI's and any .MUS file up to 2006 through GPO if the instumentation is what I have in my sound library, but thats all I would do is record whatever GPO spat out. No audio editing. If allowed, you know whwre to find me.

Noir7
December 9th, 2006, 11:18 am
Of course it's allowed, but I don't want anyone to be *responsible* to make audio for everyone else. If someone really wants their MIDI > Mp3, then feel free to ask the ones who volunteer.

And Marty-kun, this is a thread for submitting and asking questions, no comments/critique allowed.

Christmas Twilight (http://two.xthost.info/mazeppa/Aldric%20Ulep-Christmas%20Twlight.mid)

Above is the midi version, and below, for those of you who want it, is the .MUS version. I think I might want it in mp3, because everybody's computer has different midi sounds (I had no idea  ), but I don't want to bother anyone :heh: So, if you can, could you (talking to noone in particular :heh: ) turn my midi into an mp3? im sorry for asking, don't hit me x_x lolz, j/k xD

EDIT: Wow, I just listened to the midi version, and I heard how much of a difference the sound makes :o Never mind, don't turn it into an mp3

EDIT2: For those of you who can't open the file, here's the background info to the song:

"As Christmas approaches, everyone rejoices as families are brought closer together, and joy fills the air. When the Twilight is reached, Christmas is over and everyone is filled with the post-holiday blues. Not for long, as New Year's is just around the corner..."

Is there a possibility to extend the deadline to Christmas? For both time's sake and it's nifty...or were to planning to compile the results and have it ready by the 25th?

Noir7
December 11th, 2006, 08:47 am
I'm not home by Christmas, and I want to create the voting poll a day or so before Christmas, and then have it running until New Years. So no, December 22nd is still the deadline.

I MIGHT be able to mix one or two midis into mp3... but as noir7 said, its very time consuming... anyway if you have a midi youŽd like me to mix pm me, no promises though.

I don't mind making one or two MIDIs into MP3 either, but bear in mind that I don't have the best sequencers and whatnot to make it sound fanciful, and furthermore, I only have orchestral and ethnic samples, so if you're a synth person, I can't promise you that I can do it. But I ditto One_Winged's comment as an overall: "no promises though".

ooo, I just started a requiem (at the end, funnily enough...), and the movement I started with, the optional Lux Aeterna would make a pretty cool Christmas song. I doubt it will be fully functional in time, but I'll do what I can.

After much fine adjustment, I've decided to post my entry.

The cheersfulness of a small town as it prepares for christmas. The childrens running, the last minute shoppers. Though it's a small place, people's hearts are all the same and smiles decorates the streets. Enjoy:P

And you would be correct! So...this is the first contest I've participated in since...Spring, I believe.

Submission: Yuletide Waltz (http://www.crumble-onuts.com/music/Yuletide_Waltz.mp3)

I actually didn't get to finish the whole thing in time for the deadline, but I've got the first section done at least. And bear in mind that it's sort of an "easy-listening" piece, so try not to fall asleep! :)

Sir_Dotdotdot
December 21st, 2006, 11:58 pm
Well, since I don't really have time to fix this piece up, I guess I'm entering it as it is. ._. It's not perfect, I know, and the sampling has some rough edges here and there. Furthermore, some parts are untweaked, so forgive me. Oh, and it's quite short for a symphonic orchestral piece. Not to mention it has a lot of fun percussions in it. One more thing, the oboe/flute octave doubling at the melody somewhere in the middle is a major orchestration flaw, I don't have time to fix it, so bare with me.

Note: It's an atmospheric piece, so there won't be any 'memorable' themes or whatever. But there are themes, motives and melodies.

Here you go! Lux Aeterna, or at least what I've had time to make of it. VERY different mood than the other pieces. I wanted to get more to the spirit of Christmas rather than the happenings of christmas. (BTW, the midi has kinda screwed-up dynamics. The MP3 sounds smoother, but it uses strings instead of voices, and the voices are what the song was meant to have)

sadly i didn't have enough time to submit mine due to end-of-the-year school commitments..dang..

had a perfect title for it too lol

December 22nd, 2006, 05:25 pm
finally done! In the nick of time, lol :heh:
Well, for me christmas is a fun and happy thing, sometimes it's hectic though and sometimes just nice and relaxing, sitting together with your family, candles on the table... so yeah, I tried to include those things in this song.
Hope you enjoy it!

PS: amazed by the title of the song? yes? well, it was the most fitting I could come up with...

"A Breath of Snow"
A gloomy winter holiday...if you've seen the anime Kanon you might understand this a little more.

Just recently discovered that an MP3 mixer was lying on my Sibelius disc. Thought I'd give it a try. The MP3 sounds are pretty cool, except the sax (actually, they only had 20 instruments, so it's "tenor sax" technically) sounds like crap. I could only use 8 instruments at the same time with Kontakt Player Silver.

So tired of this damn mp3 now...

On a side note...I also have Kontakt Player 2...so if anybody knows how I can use that with Sibelius, PM me, ya? Cuz I don't...
