I just purchased (sp?) Doom 3 for the PC and I think now I have a paranoia problem.. The game is extremely realistic, and scared me to death... It was well worth the $54.00. Wait... what was that?
Their's a wall behind me, so I'm safe... what?! OH GOD!!!! *shoots a rocket behind him* How do they keep doing that?!?!?

Nicolas

Heh, I only saw my dad and bro playing and I was scared to death myself. :heh:

I'm quite a paranoiac though... :sweatdrop:

My cousin got it and said it's really freaky, yet he can't stop playing.

Drakoniac
August 6th, 2004, 02:22 am
yea, its not really that scary...its more just a creepy feel. especiall when you get down into hell, all yer guns are taken away, you have to face hell knights, oh and no flashlight =)...so when its dark, its really fucking dark. but, its the best FPS ive played since painkiller and that was a damn good game

M

:offtopic: What was painkiller about again?

you die in a car accident, then you get recruited by heaven to kill some of hells generals, then you kill all these guys and finally make it to hell, where you fight lucifer. after hes dead the gargoyles surround you and tell you that they had planned to kill him anyways and take over, so it sets up fer a nice sequel =)

Nightmare

So is it scary in suspense like Silent Hill, or more in envoirnment and suprises?

Wraith
August 6th, 2004, 03:40 am
Suspense because monsters show up whenever and wherever they want, and environment because it's pitch black, you hear monsters all over the place, and sometimes you hear other people being devoured and stuff

Gand
August 6th, 2004, 05:50 am
haha that game has scared the crap out of me many times... try playing it in the dark with surround sound or headphones... holy shit!

How's the actual gameplay part of it? I know the graphics are great and the atmosphere is extremely creepy but I've heard the gameplay leaves something to be desired and is a little too old-school for its own good. Anyone have thoughts on this?

it's Doom. it's all about the carnage.

I did like how they put more depth into the story and environment though

you are all pussies for 2 reasons:

1) you're getting scared by a video game, which has no real-life connotations

2) you paid for the game

I agree with Gand.. try playing it at night with your headphones on. The one who doesn't react by either shooting around in despair, or push yourself backwards with your chair when a monster suddenly attacks you from nowhere, is unhuman or has no fear at all. =P

Now seriously, it is scary. It's not the game of the year in my opinion though, just a game I'm glad I played.

The game-play is just a basic "kill-everyone-in-site-even-if-they-are-friendly." The controls are that of a typical FPS, Missions seem quite easy at first, until a monster pops up from nowhere and you yell "OH MY GOD" and then use the BFG on them. Yeah, not much in the story though (no FF here)...

Simply put, the game is an awsome thriller that delivers, but if your into intricate storylines, and massive customization, try Deus Ex or Unreal 2. If not, you hit your mark..

@Angelic: I agree...

AHHHHH!!!! FLAMING SKULL. *fires chaingun at it* DIE DIE DIE!!!!

real life scary situations suck, like when you friend gets in a car wreck. I'd much rather be scared (thrilled) by a game or a movie.

and yeah, you might want to reconsider 1) your attitude and 2) your username

i hardly deserve a warning for expressing my opinion and backing it up with sufficient reasons. perhaps my 2nd point was considered poor because i didnt supply reason. i assumed you would all understand what i was trying to communicate. if you care to elaborate on my alleged sucking, i will be willing to listen

I think Angelic's just being childish.

Elite666
August 7th, 2004, 06:55 am
You weren't just expressing an opinion, you were being extremely belligerent. You weren't supporting your opinion at all and you were insinuating that you were playing a downloaded version of the game which, last I checked, was slightly against the rules here. Some people feel supporting the industry instead of leeching off it is important.

Oh, and about the sucking, I'm sure someone will be glad to elaborate as soon as you elaborate on our being "pussies".

donkey
August 7th, 2004, 07:35 am
i have only played the game, i do not own it, and didnt see the need to even "leech" it. you have jumped to a conclusion and assumed i downloaded it, when i am merely suggesting a more efficient resource. supporting the industry is good, but i am yet to see why AUD80+ for a game is reasonably priced.

i use the term "pussy" as i feel it is most suitable to assert my feelings. fear from a video game is simply weak (can you relate that word to my point, or do i need to use less colloquialisms?) as there is no sense of reality- being scared by a monster jumping in front of you is the same as being scared when someone yells "boo!" from behind when you dont expect it. that is not fear. fear is more realistic trauma, something which cant be delivered via a keyboard/gamepad, or even a movie. The Day After Tomorrow is perhaps the closest to fear, but it is a hollywood movie as such, and deriving fear from it is still pussy.

Elite666
August 7th, 2004, 07:47 am
Pussy is still a derogatory term when applied to humans so I still have a problem with it but I don't feel like pursuing it because this would just turn into a flame war.

Anyway, I think a form of media can very much instill a sense of fear in us that doesn't just use shock factor. Have you ever seen "The Ring" that movie creates fear in the viewer and it does so without resorting to cheap methods. The aforementioned cheap methods are perfectly suitable for instilling fear even. Basically, if it can create a congruent biological response in a person as fear, it's fear. If you've never been frightened by a form of media, good on you but that doesn't mean there is anything wrong with being frightened by said media.

donkey
August 7th, 2004, 07:53 am
yes, i intend pussy to be derogatory. for one to find it offensive, they understand my meaning and reason for using it perhaps a little too personally.

shock is the only acceptable form of media-scare. the reason humans have no technology to contact other life forms is simple, we believe the media as truth, and it lowers intelligence. a movie is simply that, pure entertainment, and i cannot see how an educated person can relate pure entertainment to fear. other life forms obviously would have technology to contact us, and thus be smart enough to understand that because something that happens in a game/movie it does not mean it will happen in real life. society seems to ignore that fact, and does not bother to understand that it is almost impossible for those occurances to be instigated

Gand
August 7th, 2004, 07:57 am
I'd say "scary" is more like a thrill, rather than actual fear

so saying something scared the crap out of me didn't mean I was feeling fear, but rather thrilled in some way.

donkey
August 7th, 2004, 08:01 am
that is understandable, and the obvious intention of these companies. geting scary shocking thrills is great, but if you are getting fear then you are obviously not mature enough to be enjoying whatever media is making you fear it

Sounds like a cooling problem. Try getting better cooling, system fans or so, maybe a new cooler for your CPU or video card. Also try cleaning your current ones first, dust creates lots of heat problems.

@noir: It's the same all the time? :( One of the things I loved about the other Doom games was how the levels all had their own looks and feel. The PDA annoys the shit out of me though.

nah, it's not a cooling problem... Even with a huge box fan blowing directly on the card it still locks up. I've tried tons of combinations of drivers and 3 different 9800 pro cards now; same problem. Also when stressing my card in 3DMark 03 or games like Doom 3, I have no problems.

There seems to be a lot of angry Far Cry customers with my card (9800pro) and several other ATi cards on the far cry forums. I think they just forgot to cater to about half of their customers.

Graphics - awesome! 10/10
Sound - good, sets the creepy atmosphere - 9/10
Gameplay - smooth action, scary moments (it'll freak you out) - 9/10
Replay value - Don't know yet, but considering there are more difficulty levels, I'd say 8/10 for now. And there is multiplayer.
