Heh, I just started doing 3d modeling again about a week ago...I've only got one picture so far, but I figured I'd share it. :3
From now on, all my 3d work will be put into this thread. Enjoy! ^ ^

It took like 600 pages of reading, and a few headaches, but I think it was worth it. ^_^

Great job, thought it was real the first second I looked at it.

Thanks again! ^ -^

It was a good deal of work making that picture, so I appreciate the kind comments. ^_^

Also, I started doing 3d artwork when I was around 10 or 11. (I'm 18 now.) I thought I'd post a few pictures from when I was 12, just to show the difference, and because I don't have anything new to show you guys just yet. Don't worry though, I plan to have a fully animated, photo-realistic robot in a few days. It should be worth the wait! ^ ^

Anyway, old pictures!
For a book report in 6th grade: (all the girls were so impressed, haha!)

and some slime also made around 6th grade, just for fun, because I was 12 and thought slime was awesome. XD

Actually, out of everything (for me) the washers are the washers are the least realistic. They're too shiny/beveled.

Other than that, it could be a photo.

HopelessComposer

^ Yeah, the washers are way too shiny to be really realistic looking...but when I had them matte, they looked kind of boring. Also, I wanted them to reflect the enviroment around them...that's basically why they were there in the first place. Because of that, I decided to sacrifice a bit of realism for a more visually appealing picture. ^ ^

I'm a painter, so I tend to focus on making things look interesting before realistic. The shaft on the screw driver is also a little too shiny...that was mainly because of laziness on my part though. XD

Thanks for the comment! ^_^

Yeah. The artistic effect is great though.

Wow. Those look really realistic. At first I actually thought they were photographs, but the washers in the first image pretty much gave it away. Either way, they're awesome!

good work, You gonna jump into any big projects soon? or are you just working yourself back in to the whole 3d thing? Also, what software is that if you dont mind me askin.

HopelessComposer
January 17th, 2007, 05:16 pm
@tkd27613: Haha, thanks man! And yeah, the washers do give them away. Real washers aren't beveled (they're just flat discs, unlike like mine) and they're not so shiny. Mine look like they have a thin rubber coating on them in my opinion, which makes no sense obviously, but I loved them anyway, so I kept them. XD

@Siul1313: My next project is going to be a few minute animation featuring a (hopefully) awesome, (hopefully) cute, (hopefully) photo-realistic robot. XD
After that I'm going to make a website, do a few more pieces of art and stick them on there, and then contact Microsoft. I hope to be publishing games on the Xbox 360 through live market place within a few months. Wish me luck everybody! :heh:

Also, the program I'm using is Maya 8.0 unlimited. It costs $7,000 though, so I don't know if you'd want to buy it. Cheaper programs include Lightwave, 3dsmax, and blender. Blender is free I think, and not as good as the other three because of that. Lightwave is the cheapest of the professional programs as far as I know, and it's what I used to use. I'd suggest that, it's very good. Of course, if you're a pirate, you can get any of them for free anyway, in which case, I'd recommend Maya. X3

O_o US Dollars or something else? >_>

HopelessComposer
January 17th, 2007, 08:07 pm
US dollars, hence the dollar sign. XD
Yeah, it's ridiculously expensive. But it's worth it; it's a great program, and the most popular in games and movies (along with 3dsmax.)
I mean, seven grand is a lot of money, but I think Square Enix, Nintendo, Microsoft, and most other developers can afford it, so they can really charge whatever the heck they want for it, and companies will still buy it. XP

I think Lightwave is only around $1,500 now, for a comparison. I'm not sure what 3dsmax goes for. Maya's the most expensive though... :3

I have the feeling you either got it through school or pirated it XD

Maya has a PLE edition (personal learning edition) thats based on maya 7.0 I think its free but watermarks your renders if I remember correctly.

[edit] I forgot to say this one was free

Maya is actually quite cheap for educators and students. I could get it through the university for about 400 USD. Some odd 8150 USD worth of discounts.

Thanks Dream! ^_^

Here's what I'm working on now everyone:
http://www.eterna-soft.com/images/tower.jpg

A tower! Not nearly done obviously, no textures or lighting or anything. It'll soon be part of a whole scene though, hopefully a very pretty one. ^_^
About five hours work to model it, mostly because I was also learning a new program in the process. That, and Maya kept on screwing up my model on me. Bleh.

Edit: My bad, it actually is textured with a procedural bump map. It looks better without it actually; all the stone work and such is actual model detail; the only thing the bump map is doing is making the stone grainy and messy looking. Bleach. That'll be taken off for the final render of course. XD

February 20th, 2007, 05:12 am
First of all, thanks Arashi! Sorry I took so long to reply, I wanted a decent update before bumping my own thread. :heh:
Second of all, I finally got my color map basically finished for my tower. It still needs work in a few areas, but it'll easily be done tomorrow.
Next up is bump and reflection mapping, and then this sucker should pretty much be done. Stick it in a pretty landscape, and make a nice little movie clip out of it! ^_^
Anyway, tower: (!)

Sorry the pic is so huge, heheh. PrintScreen tends to do that. XD

Hopeless, mind posting render times and computer specs?

HopelessComposer
February 21st, 2007, 12:48 am
No problem Luis. ^_^
As of yet, I haven't actually rendered anything - zbush renders in real time. As soon as I bring it into maya and start doing finished renderings, I'll post the information for you though. :3
My lazy self is taking the day off and lounging around, so I'll probably have some stuff for you tomorrow. ;)\
And my system is pretty crappy...some old ati card with 128mb ram. (My newer card burnt out; I desperately need another video card. This one just isn't cutting it. XD)
1.8GHz sempron processor...512 Mb RAM...andddd that's about it I guess. I'm running on XP, not that that matters too much for rendering times. I'm going to guess and say that when I have all the maps put on the tower, it'll take about a minute to render without global lighting and all that. Of course, I have like OCD, so I NEED global lighting and everything turned up. So it'll probably end up taking something ridiculous, like 20 minutes per frame. I'll let you know how it renders with different settings. X3

Also, I'm assuming you're a 3d artist too, since you're asking these questions. So could I just ask you...do you know whether or not faster video cards will speed up rendering in maya? I was kind of under the assumption that the answer was "no," but I'm not really sure. I'm assuming a nicer video card would only help out with maya's real time rendering. I'm pretty sure the final renders are all CPU, right?
(Doesn't want to buy a new video card just yet.) :heh:

Edit: lmao, thanks for putting my last pic into a spoiler tab. A mighty solution! X3

lol, im not a graphic artist, I'd love to be tho.

I asked for no reason, just curiosity. AFAIK your GPU wont help in the actual rendering process only the "in work" phase, ofcourse this could soon change since people are folding with Ati GPUs now.

You might want to google for maya optimizing guides your ram is lacking and your proc isnt the best. if you really want to upgrade for this kind of work, id tone down the "reality" of the interface (IDK how to explain this, lets say you have a ball thats made up of 200 subdivisions, make it normaly show 50 or 100 to speed up GUI rendering) and put the money towards a new CPU or more ram.

Honestly unless you're doing something very hardcore the GPU you have now should cut it.

You might want to look into slight OCs, even if you dont, manage your cables and increaser airflow as much as possible to reduce chances of your system throttling down.

Blah!
I imported my model into Maya, and the texture got all muddy on me, so apparently my tower isn't even close to being finished yet. ughhh.
Anyway Luis, I rendered the tower in Maya (about 500,000 polys) without any lighting or anything, and it took two minutes. I really need to update my computer. But yeah...I need to fix my texture somehow now too. Oh well > <

And yeah, I didn't think GPU really helped with rendering time. XD

im not uptodate on render times ><
As I said, google around abit, get your motherboard specs. you could double your ram for like 40 bucks (add another 512 stick) and triple it for 75. (add a 1gb stick)

Then find out your socket, shop around and you might be able to find a great deal, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819112207 thats higher clockspeed and dualcore for only 50 bucks

Im not sure, but I think ram would help in rendering more than proc, proc would be more usefull in the actual work. (dont quote me on that)

with 100 bucks you could greatly improve it, (not just for maya work, for everything ecxept gaming.)
^_^

Is this going to be an animation? or a single frame? will some of the backround be 3d as well or will you lay an image behind the tower?

No worries, neither am I. XD

Yeah, I'm going to get more RAM soon; I can't even run photoshop and Maya at the same time right now. Bleh!

It'll be an animation, just because 3d animations take about the same amount of work as 3d pictures do, except 3d animations give you more bang for your...work. XD
The background will be 3d also, the only image I'll be using is an HDRI sky image. So the sky will be a photo, but everything else will be modeled in 3d. Actually, the sky will be mapped to a giant globe, so I guess that'll technically be 3d too. X3

Uhmmmm, a short animation for y'all.
http://www.eterna-soft.com/images/shadertest3_1.mov
I think that's probably the coolest looking fluid I've ever invented. Just exploring Maya's shading/node system a bit...XD
Of course, that isn't a full animation...I'm working on a more complete movie using that fluid shader. :3

As for my tower, well...I spent like 10 hours on it, and then realized I did everything wrong and would have to start all over again...so screw that. I'll probably restart that little project sometime, but not for a bit...

Haha, thanks. I was supposed to have more work done like a week ago. Sadly, I'm totally ADHD, so I can never keep on working on one thing for long. I'm doing web design now...then probably some composing, and then maybe back to 3d work again...unless I decide to do some drawing first. We'll see I guess. Oo
