Practice? Hard Work? Learn to model better? XD

I don't know what to tell you but to use lots of reference and to keep plugging away at it. Also, maybe you could use a general head tutorial as a base and then tweak it afterwards? Good luck. ^_^

Pointers:

Start small, dont jump into such a large project on the first try, big things like a character can overwhelm and demoralize you.

Get some experience, read LOADS of tutorials/opinions/techniques not only on character making but EVERYTHING you can find.

Do a couple simpler models for practice so you get used to the interface and can avoid problems that might show up and kill your model at the end.

THEN start the big project.

Start with any simple object around you. That water bottle? A pen? A wine glass? Your cell phone? A lamp? If you can't even make those things, you'll never manage to make a person.

start with:

A pen
A can
A football (american football)

Move onto:

A lamp, a monitor, a gamepad

Move onto:

A car (simple)
a quadruped

Then do final project.

(note thats just what I think)

^Yeah, what Siul said. Also, doing 3d modeling is like %50 modeling skill and %50 just plain knowing the ins and outs of the program you're using. Because of this, modeling tutorials are also immensely helpful to any beginner. They're also fun to do, and satisfying because you usually end up making some cool stuff. Anyway, good luck, I don't see many 3d modelers around. Welcome to the fold! XD
