Yes, it is, but I figure that Clair de Lune has inspired countless pianists. It's just that incredibly beautiful. Claude Debussy is my hero!
Some good stuff there. I need to get me the entire Bach Inventions book - I've only done 13 and 11...
Yes, you should. They have really helped me technically as well as with my memorization skills (which are a little lacking, unfortunately) and my voicing, especially in my left hand. A lot of people think they are mechanical and not musical, but you can make them musical. There is a lot of phrasing and voicing that you can do with them, it just takes a strong musical sense and ear. My favorites are 4, 5, and 6...but those also happen to be the ones I'm working on now...:P And of course, 13 is a classic.
Three cheers for mallet players that play piano!!

Oh yes, if all the piano/mallet players joined together, they would be capable of taking over the world because of their sheer brilliance.

I've got a bit of a dilemma going on there - I could probably be pic captain next year if I wanted to (our pit sucks hardcore), but I could also probably be quad captain. Not to brag, but I'm good at both. What to do? Augh...
Sorry for the tangent.
I usually practice about an hour a day on percussive stuff, and now that things are quieting down around here, I hope to get another hour in for piano.

Hmm...well which do you enjoy more? Quads or mallets? Being a pitt section leader is a lot of work (I should know) and most of it is irritating... like trying to get people to stop talking during sectionals when really you'd rather be talking too and so on. But I bet that a lot of the work is not really associated with pitt as much as it would be with any other section. Since being a section leader is a lot of work (especially if the section sucks), I would choose quads or mallets based on whichever instrument you get the most pleasure out of playing and the people you get along with the best. Maybe if you have some close friends in your section they will forgive you for making them do exercises over and over again.
Oh yes, and by all means practice the piano!

Hey Jumpoff, it's cool to hear from another percussionist/pianist. Good luck with all your music endeavors. I don't think you have any problems with holding yourself to a high standard! Hehe. Oh, and don't give up on piano. I've found that percussion is a lot of fun but it never gives me as much personal satisfaction as playing the piano does. But that's just my opinion of course.

Teaching piano is not that hard but having the kids to understand the importance of practicing is right up there with rocket science. The older kids I teach is very easy and quite rewarding to watch them grow but the 5-6year old kids...they are brutal! Is 10min a day of practice that much to ask?

Haha! Yeah, I kinda can base with you there, man. I kinda got myself ahead in the couple of months of my playing around on keyboard a couple years ago, but since I progressed about 7 years in 1 year, It'd be hard to teach someone from the beginning and all that, so an intermediate would be good.
All "early-teaching" is: give them an easy exercise book, assign so many exercises/etudes and check on them weekly and make like $10-$20 in the process. Lol??

Instrument: Main focus is on clarinet.
Songs I'm working on:
Mozart Clarinet Concerto: K. 622; Rondo and Allegro movements.
-I can play this quite well with little practice, but there are some little things that I need to fix, such as rushing on runs.
Solo De Concours; Andre Messager. (If you want to see a video of someone playing it (not me): http://youtube.com/watch?v=mkTxH9iCix0).
-Very fun to play. There's only one 'scale' in the song I need to fix. But still, a bit easy  .
Ultimate goal: Master the Mozart Clarinet Concerto (soooo close :0 ). I am considering becoming a clarinet virtuoso, since I am doing very well on clarinet, considering that I've only played for about 4-5 years. + improve my tone (which I know will change in the next few months :shifty: ).
Influences:
To be able to master playing: I once (actually, twice :heh: ) practiced for 6 hours straight, due to boredom, which greatly improved my technique and sightreading skills :0 . I've enjoyed playing ever since.

Instrument: Piano. uh, keyboard as well you could say...synthesizers...and goddamn i love cowbells. i studied percussion only for about two years or so ages ago but man...the cowbell is hands down the funkiest instrument ever created.
Songs im working on: Erm...anything. depends on my mood.
-Grade 7 stuff. i don't know when i'm going to do the exam (i'm oriented around jazz so i haven't really done any technical musical exams!) but i have to work on the repertoire just in case its soon, haha! i freaking hate scales! i love chopin though!
-random Chopin Nocturnes.
-Rhapsody in Blue, for 2 pianos. my piano teacher challenged me to a 'duel' over this piece, she's playing the accompanying piano orchestration and i'm doing the solo piano part. i love it! so fresh! difficult though in some parts.
-a fair few Final Fantasy Piano Collection pieces. FFX's piano collections are my favourites so far...stuff like Attack (which i've mastered!), Besaid Island, Song of Prayer, and Yuna's Determination. I've played through FF7's Those Who Fight but i havent mastered it, i don't think i'll get around to it...much as i'd like to...

Instruments. piano, violin
Current Songs. Anna Magdalena Notebook by J.S. Bach (Compilation - Piano); Sicilienne and Rigaudon by Fritz Kreisler (Violin); Eine Kleine Nachtmusik by Johann Mozart (Violin);
Influence. My mother signed me up for piano lessons when I was five years old because she had always wanted to play the piano herself, but was never able to. I started playing the violin on my own because I was the only one who didn't get to try an instrument when they brought them by to try to interest us in joining the school's band and orchestra in the third grade.
Playing Experience. twelve years (piano); eight (violin)
Ultimate Goal. Become a professional musician.
Genre. I'll play anything, but I particularly like classical (especially baroque) and movie/television music.

What I've Done
Reasons for Playing:
Flute:
This was my first instrument, I wanted to play it for it's soft mellow sound(especially the Jazz Flute). I also wanted to see what was so hard about it, as people constantly said the flute embouchure was difficult... which it turned out not to be. It's glory faded when I heard the rich sounds of the Soprano Sax, which is my ultimate goal.
Alto:
Well, I wanted to play in the Jazz Band so badly, and while the flute was amazing, it was always drowned out by the upper brass instruments. So, when they needed a new Saxophonist, I took up the job. The embouchure for reed instruments turned to be harder, I COMPLETELY mastered it in three months. And even then, the Alto has an awesome tone, especially when mastered.
Piano:
Well, when summer came along, and I realized in hadn't an Alto nor Flute to play during the summer, I dusted off my sister's Piano. Since all my music was compatible with it, I could play all music, and even mixed the sounds around in differents Keys. Then, I really started to practiced, taking my Piano music I transcribed for the flute and used both hands. LASTLY, I found Ichigos, in which I found Hikari, being I loved the song, I decided to learn to play it.
Lastly, my ultimated goal is to obtain and master a Soprano Sax. Being the second highest pitch of Saxophone, it reminded of the flute, which is why I love it.
