Violin:Strad "Faciebat Anno 17-The Betts"
Years:17
Age:20
Started Playing:3
Current Song: Tchaikovsky Violin Concertos
Orchestra:Fomer Iwakuni Orchestra Concert Master-Right now I'm not it one.
Education:Bachelor's and Master's

Well, Hello fellow violinists. I absolutely love the violin. Dr.Suzuki and Yehudi Menuhin are the people that inspired me the most. I was in the Iwakuni Orchestra since i was 18 but I moved to Berlin two days ago. I hope for a spot in the Berlin Philharmonic or the College orchestra next season. My favorite composers are, Beethoven,Vivaldi,Paginini, and Tartini. I also know how to play the Piano,Viola, and Cello. I plan to get a Degree in Musical performance and a Minor in Music Education. i'm hoping for a Doctorates. I wish I could play the Bass but my fingers are long enough to reach all the fingerings of the Full Size Bass. My most prized posession is my violin and in Osaka(where my parents are) I have Yehudi Menuhin's autograph framed on my old room...I got to see him in concert in America when we went there for vacation when I was 12 and he passed away 2 years later...I just love music and don't plan on giving up.

Violin: It's a Rudolph Doetsh (did I spell it right, I doubt it...) that I've had for a little over two years
Years: 8
Age: 16
Started Playing: 8
Current Song: Corelli's La Folia, Handel's Sonata No. 2 (in Suzuki book 6)
Orchestra: 7th first violin in my school string orchestra
Education: Sophomore in high school
Private Lessons: Once a week, 45 minutes, $45.00
School: High School...but it's got a good music program with 3 orchestras...and a lot of asians XD I'm the best(chair-wise) non-asian violinist in my orchestra...and the only white first violin...

I want to be a professional violinist, and major in music (and maybe get a doctorate...) my current conductor inspires me, and he also inspired me to play professionally.

What do you mean only white first violin??? You have a white-painted violin? I thought that you couldn't have a colored violin in an orchestra.O__o

P.S.I am asian and I'm not a progidy or anything...just...really passionate about music...I can play fairly well but I didn't become virtuoso when i was like...8 or anything...Europeans are much better.

Oh yeah forgot to introduce myself. :heh:

violin: Guarneri del Gesu
years: 10
started: 4
current: Goldmark's concerto in E minor (i think) and Sevcek books (is that right?)

Orchestra: assistant concertmaster of YOR (Youth Orchestra of the Rockies)
Education: 9th grade
Private lessons: once a week $60 an hour with Mr. Alvaro DeGrande
School orchestra: would be concertmaster if I joined. The program at my school is really for

I can play violin, bass, cello, and piano. I want to learn chinese violin but there is no one in my area who can play one. My violin teacher, conductor, and old violin teacher were my inspiration to play violin professionally. I want to double major in violin and law. I want to minor in theater. (busy career). My teacher says that if i practice hard, i can probably start the Tchaikovsky concerto in about 2 or 3 years. Yeah i love the violin. When i practice, i sometimes loose track of the time and my mom has to tell me to stop playing the violin and to start my homework. During the summer, i once stayed up until like 3 am playing the violin.

It is...Yehudi Menuhin was but he was never noticed as one until age 11...

-The chinese violin didn't really orginiate in China...It orginated in Vietnam. And it's call the Dan Co or Erhu. It needs lots of shifting since it's just 2 strings and they use their feet as a mute...My grandpa knew how to play that.

*gulp* sounds like me lol. :heh: minus the Hollister. Yeah i am an asian and i am a freshman in high school. If i wanted to join my school orchestra i would be concertmaster. In my Youth orchestra i am assistant concertmaster. I was really happy though when i made it into the Western States Honor Orchestra and got third chair in my section. Next year i want to do All-State Honor Orchestra as well.

I was never in my High School Orchestra. What's Hollister???
When I was in high school I was in the Sakura Quartet but I quit when I got into college because I tried out for the Iwakuni Orchestra and i made 2nd First Violin. When the Concertmaster passed away I was appointed 1st Concert Mistress but I still don't think I deserved it because I think it was because nobody tried out for violin that season.I;m trying out for the Berlin Phil next season. Aggghhh my life is so crazy!

My school's pretty competitive... I'm about average when compared to everyone else at school...

Actually, in my school district, it's required to be in instrumental or vocal music in 4-6 grade...I started playing in second grade, so I've been playing longer than a lot of violinists at my school...but there are those people who started at 3 *coughamecough*

First of all, would you consider assistant concertmaster close enough to concertmaster? The only music i listen to is either from anime, classical music, or some Gregorian chants lol. Yeah all of my classmates laugh at me because i don't listen to any popular music. In the car, i listen to a radio station that plays classical music only!:) Second, XwindX, I really like the Accolay concerto it is really fun! Finally, Red violin? do you mean color or some maker or something else?

I meant the legend. You know of the red violin. I forgot what his name was but a maker of a violin made the brush from a lady's hair while she was dying and took her blood and made paint from it and it is told to give the player incredible skill and fame but in doing that, exchanging your soul.

It gets frustrating at times but you really have to love the instrument and feel that your life would be incomplete about it. I remember when I broke my arm when I was 18 and I felt like I had lost my best friend. The violin is really fun and it feels good to be able to play good music!

Yeah I know what you mean. I got really sick once and my parents said I couldn't practice my violin or piano yet I still had to go to school. I got really bored so all I would listen to was tapes I had recorded from my lessons. It really drove my parents crazy because I would be listening to it all night and day.

chestnutviolin, there are some tricks for ledger lines. You know that the top line of the treble clef is f right? Like how the spaces are labled FACE, the lines for ledger lines then go F (starting at the top line of the clef) FACE and then (starting on the same note) EGBDF ("every good boy does fine) See what i mean? Its similar with spaces. Starting on the top space of the clef, it goes EGBDF and then with that same ledger line, FACE. Sorry if its a bit confusing but that is how I learned it. I would suggest getting a private teacher but that decision is up to you and your parents. Just try practicing in third position as much as possible.

Vibrato takes practice. But now it's second nature to me...I use it almost all the time now. Otherwise I think it sounds flat...anyone ever tried vibrato-ing on pizzicato notes? It makes a weird sound...

I like shifting...it's fun!

<--- violin nerd

I'm the only one in my orchestra comfortable playing higher than 5th position...I'm thinking of trying out for orchestras out of school...

Edit: For songs I'm working on now, I'm playing Handel's Sonata No. 3 and Fiocco's Allegro(I don't know what piece this is from), both from Suzuki book 6. I might take a little break from the books soon to work on harder stuff. In my free time, I'm self-teaching myself Vivaldi's Four Seasons...yes, a little beyond my level, and I can't play the fast parts at full speed...but I love the pieces to death, especially Winter and Summer, and Spring mvt. 1.

8 years. I can shift to all postions. It takes practice. I don't usually have to shift higher than 6th except for scales...(I practice 3 octave scales...I HATE playing scales >_< but it helps with finger speed)

ohhh
sounds hard. I think the higher the note the harder it is to tune. Sometimes i just go blank and have no clue if the note is in tune or not... pretty sad, but brain fars happen to everyone. right?

Chestnut violin,

Yeah I used to be like that to. always wanting to just quit especially after a frustrating lesson wher you do everything wrong! lol. I have been playing for 5 years now and I am SOOO glad I didn't give up. I improved alot once I took it more seriously and started practicing everyday.

Pianoboy9,

I am still trying to get the vibrato down packed (such a pain but it sounds so nice!) but 1 of the main keys is to have an extremly loose wrist. So before you start loosen your wrist up until it is all floppy like. then do what chestnut violin said.

How long did it take everyone else to learn vibrato?

Tip: I don't play Violin, but I suggest, to make things easier (since I KNOW that violinists are more used to sharps than flats) put it into the ENHARMONIC SHARP KEY ;) . If you don't get what I mean, for example, A Flat Major is the same as G# Major. Bb Major is the same as A# Major (but it's only two flats :bleh: ).

Vibrato is when you vibrate the string. It gives it a very heavenly sound. You just have to kinf of feel the music and when you first start just wiggle your wrist a little. There are many different types of vibrato though. Each one is right for that kind of player.

You can never do Vibrato wrong becasue there's no 'real' way to do it. some players move their wrist, some their fingers, some their arm, or some all. There's all kinds!^_^

I have been playing 3 years and almost quit every year. I need the dedication that you have . I am lazy and slack alot. I know ths is cheesy but you motivated me to keep playing and start practicing more.

How long did it take everyone else to learn vibrato?

oh and....

lol. I love scales! Once you can do scales, you can play a lot of things a lot more easily. I can do 3 octave scales, scales in triads, and octaves. It took me a few days to get a decent vibrato.

Yes, some scales seem easy(some are hard) but they really help your sight reading, intonation, and your overall skill. PRACTICE SCALES!

Yeah. get a book of scales. I use the Carl Flesch (not sure how to spell his name) scale book but that might be too hard. Another good one is essential for strings or scales for advanced violinists. I think they both have 3 octave scales. Which scales do u need to do?

I've taken violin for 5 years, since I was 9 years old. I used to take private lessons, then I was in junior orchestra, and now I take private lessons as a trio with my brothers who play cello and viola.

Hahha, I play both the violin and piano.
I've played the piano for a longer period
of time rather that the violin and find
myself playing the piano every single night.
My school classes [orchestra] are very
advanced. So the songs are very enjoyable
to play with all the rest of the class.
I was also in the San Diego Honor's Orchestra
for this year. I can't seem to get enough
of "La Rejouissance" and "Tango Trocadero." :)

*waves* Violinist here! It was my first instrument, and I've been playing for about ten years, though I just stick with private lessons. It's beyond fun to play video game music with my perfect pitch too - that's why this forum appealed to me because of the sheet music.

Which Strad? I have a Jean-Baptiste Vuillamme copy of "The Betts". Were you in school orchestra or something or another??

It's says "A. R. Seidel" on the first line and "mittenwald obb" on the second line. The third line says it's a hand made copy of a Antonious Stratevarius, west germany. It was made in 1984.. wow, my violin is 23 years old! @_@

Yup, I was in the school orchestra during all the years for junior high and high school. During high school I also joined the Lubbock Youth Symphony Orchestra which played awsome and hard music. Even had a concert with the 'real' symphony orchestra once which was pretty awesome. I was also in the All Region orchestra (fun music here). I didn't have time/wasn't good enough to do the All State orchestra, had to compete with all of Texas. Being in orchestra in my city is tough, most of the players are childern of doctors and get really expensive but really good private lessons and they are all really really good! I took a few month worth and the rest is self taught. I just didn't have the time back then to devote a lot time since I also had tons of math and science competitions.

My BS is in Computer Science and Computer Engineering.

Now I have much more time, and I am thinking about private lessons. Ha, I can even afford the expensive teacher now! Although, http://www.violinmasterclass.com is pretty awesome. I wish I knew all that stuff back then! Or may be I just wasn't paying attention. :heh: The videos are so helpful, holding up the violin doesn't hurt as much after following some of their recommendation on adjustments. I also realized my left hand position is sucky so I am having to relearn that. :( Their videos are really good.

Sorry for the long post. :P

Yeah. As you begin to play them better, do two then three octave scales. Eventually, you will get to scales in octaves, thirds, fifths, tenths, and triple stop scales lol. They really help with intonation.
