last winter I spent $170 on an xbox and used the software hack method to hack the xbox. Best $170 I ever spent. I use it to watch any non-dvd movies, play mp3s on my stereo, play NES/SNES games via emulators, and oh yeah, it cam play xbox games too :P

Recently the software hacks were wigging out, so I bought a modchip (Aladdin Pro) and soldered it in... rock-solid now

Anyone else have a hacked xbox? If you know how to solder I definatly recommend picking one up and throwing in a modchip.

Umm... aren't we supposed to avoid talking about emulated software.

Yes, I recall you poking fun at me when I did that

Anyways, I'm still learning about mine, but I'm sure I"ll be checking out some of that stuff when I get more games. I only have 2 right now, so.....I've barely touched my Xbox. You can run XP off it, right?

So sad that I don't know much about my own Xbox

it's perfectly legal if you own the game

I have a huge box of nes/snes games in my closet somewhere, but it's much easier to play them emulated on the xbox than to hook up the ol' (S)NES XD

while technically you could run xp with x86 emulation, it probably wouldn't work... the most popular shell out there is Evolution, but since I use my xbox primarily as a media player I have XBMC as my shell.

Modding is illegal in anyway that you obtain it (sorry, but it is true), and the only reason for buying an x-box today is to either:
A) Play halo
B) Play Full Spectrum Warrior
C) Play Socom (sp)
D) Mod it into a miniture computer
So I am confused, why can making something better be illegal if it does no harm... Maybe Microsoft should unlock the x-box like the people of Evo-x did?... My questions shall remain unanswered...

But as for Emulators they are as gand said; legal only if you own the game.

you just contradicted yourself in your own post... to turn it into a minicomputer you have to mod it somehow.

And no, it is not illegal. Once you own the hardware you can do anything you want with it. The only notable exception is reverse-engineering, which violates the DMCA.

because it's not illegal. Microsoft doesn't support it because they want you to spend money on games, and it is possible to play non-signed code (read: pirated) xbox games on a hacked xbox.

someone (with a LOT of free time) hacked it, in a way you could say gained unauthorized access and figured out how run their own stuff on it

abouit xbox linux... meh, it's pretty pointless unless you just want to be cool and say "lol I run linux on my xbox!"

Did the soft mod ages ago, fantastic stuff, now to wait for the next surreal 64 release to hope the Eva game works properly in it (gfx messed up in magma diver atm making it impossible to finish)

I'm not an xbox fan myself, purely cos it dont have any good RPGs (*cough* FF , Grandia 2 etc... *cough*) and no anime games (GUUUU NARRUTOO + FMAAA :P) so whoever owns an xbox and doesnt have a PS2, go bury urself, or even better.. go ditch the xbox, and get urself a PS2 ^^

Trunkz, this isn't really the place for that. If you want to argue about which console is best just make a thread for it.

Hmm... I was pretty sure that even became illegal when Nintendo also copyrighted NES emulators a few months ago. It doesn't stop anyone though and I agree that if you own the game you should be able to play it on a computer.

I knew this would happen... Let me clarify:

The only reason for buying an x-box today is to mod it; but from my sources modding is illegal (which I guess it could be legal *checks into it :4eyes:*). It's sad, but true.
