Um... What do I usually use? :heh:

I just google what I'm looking for and pick whatever's cheapest. (this is how I found Ichigo's, accually, but that's for another topic)

Footi

i don't even know how i found ichigos...lol
but i like DC++ that's nice i think for P2P...or bittorrent since there are a ton of torrents and stuff out there

Footi
March 9th, 2007, 06:12 am
DC++ ive never heard of but u sound like u know what ur talking about :P so many torrents but so many leechers!><

Neko Koneko
March 9th, 2007, 09:12 am
Aren't you a leecher yourself?

And DC++ is a Direct Connect client. I wouldn't recommend it to people who don't know much about filesharing to begin with though. Bittorrent is probably your best bet at the moment.

Did you forward your ports properly?

Footi
March 12th, 2007, 09:21 am
huh? wat ports?

HopelessComposer
March 12th, 2007, 12:48 pm
Lmao. Fscking NAT problems. I put off setting up my router's port fowarding for like six months. I finally got around to it a few weeks ago. XD
Also, Footi, I hear there's a super awesome special secret downloading program. To unlock it, all you have to do is work really hard on something for hours without saving in any application of your choice, and then you press the secret code buttons: alt+F4. Try it, it's the best program ever. Beats Azureus, Limewire and DC++ hands down!

Good luck! :3

Footi
March 13th, 2007, 04:31 am
im sure it duz :P but yeah dunno where the alt button is on the keyboard :)

HopelessComposer
March 13th, 2007, 04:46 am
Hmm, damn. That's a problem. You'll never unlock the super awesome special program without knowing where the alt key is! O:

But yah, I use azureus and get about 100 kbs on average. If you're getting much less than that, you probably have an NAT problem. Check your torrent client's help file for...help I guess. lol

Good luck. :3

Footi
March 15th, 2007, 04:18 am
hmmm ok..what so it duznt matter how many peers u have?

HopelessComposer
March 15th, 2007, 05:04 am
It does, but NAT problems will kill your download speed no matter how many peers you have.

bitTornado - music, anime, movies
ares galaxy - music
used to use getRight for movies, but some sites don't let me use it

but for sheet music and single songs, i just download them thru IE. it's pretty fast already. ^_^

Footi

man NAT problems....?? well....hmm...how do i know whether ive forwarded the ports rite and everything? whats NAT?

M
March 16th, 2007, 05:30 pm
NAT (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_address_translation)=[N]etwork [A]ddress [T]ranslation

And explaining exactly what this is is beyond the scope of this forum.

Forwarding Ports Under Windows
Start -> My Network Places (on the left) -> View Network Connections.
Right click on the computer that is lit up (or is connected to your router) and select Properties.
Select the "Advanced" tab, then properties.
Turn on Windows Firewall (note: this isn't necessary for this task, but it's still a good idea if you don't have a firewall running).
Click on Advanced -> Your Internet Connection -> Settings.
Then select "add". A new window should pop up.
Fill it out like so:

Description of Service:
Bittorrent-TCP
Name of Computer/IP address:
Your computer's assigned IP or name (whichever you know)
External Number: 23456
Internal Number: 23456
{x} TCP
{ } UDP
Then click add again.

Description of Service:
Bittorrent-UDP
Name of Computer/IP address:
Your computer's assigned IP or name (whichever you know)
External Number: 23456
Internal Number: 23456
{ } TCP
{×} UDP

That does it for configuring windows firewall. Most of the time, this does not have to be done, but it's still good to do it.

Now on to configuring your router.

Log into your router (instructions on how to do this are printed the bottom of the router). Usually you go to your browser and type 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1.
Enter in your password (also found on the bottom of the router).
Start going through tabs until you hit one that has numbers like 192.168.x.x listing off (the DHCP lease list, or connected devices).
Find your computer's name and remember that number
If you want, you can change the earlier steps 7 and 8 where it asks for your IP to this number. Computers typically like numbers better than text.
Now continue to click around until you get something called "Port Forwarding" near the top.
You'll see a few options here. Application, Port Start (from), Port End (to), Protocol, IP address, (enable).

Fill them out as following

Appication: Bittorrent
Port Start: 23456
Port End: 23456
Protocol: Both
IP address: the number from step 4
{×}Enable
Now do a "NAT" test on the port. If your torrent program does not have an option to do so in its "tools", "options", or whatever you wanna call menus, Get a new one.

I recommend either uTorrent (http://www.utorrent.com/) or Azureus (http://azureus.sourceforge.net/). uTorrent tends to be a bit easier on the user to set up.

The port number I chose to use in this mini-hell tutorial may not work (depending on the software you have already installed). If it does not, use a higher port (like 57288) or check online for un used port numbers.

I would do a linux tutorial on this (for the five people here that actually do use linux), but I think I'd fry everyone's brain.

I had it; didn't like it; Got Linux; Like it mush better.

Besides, we have our own "Secret Downloading Program"

My distro stays at "Alt-F4"
Mac's is "Command-Q"

So no one really misses out on the "Secret Downloading Program" (*thinks that most people are smart enough to know what it is.

My distro stays at "Alt-F4" That is, unless I'm using the Console, Where there are no windows.
