"Based on the awarded shoujo manga by Tomoko Ninomiya.

Shinichi Chiaki is the top piano student at his university and an excellent violinist, but Chiaki doesn`t care about playing these instruments as much as he dreams of someday being a conductor. Chiaki, however, has several deeply rooted fears about traveling, and so finds himself "trapped" in Japan. Because he`s trapped, Chiaki starts to question exactly how far he can possibly go in music, especially when he`s passed over again and again for others he thinks are less worthy of musical scholarship and fame.

Recently dumped by his girlfriend for a "sausage" looking fellow, passed over for a chance to go overseas, removed from his star spot in the piano competition because he walked out on his piano instructor, Chiaki is at his limit. This is when he meets Nodame, or Megumi Noda. Nodame is a free — if filthy — spirit who reminds Chiaki that music can be fun. She reminds him what drew him to be a conductor in the first place and, in learning how to deal with Nodame, Chiaki learns how to deal with others. Chiaki begins to realize what is possible for him, even on the tiny island of Japan.

For Nodame, Chiaki is everything she isn`t. Clean, neat, dedicated, studious and inherently arrogant about his accomplishments and capabilities, Chiaki constantly bullies her into being more serious about life. He sees potential in her and her abilities as a pianist that she doesn`t care about. Nodame loves Chiaki and wants to be with him, but, because she`s not serious about her piano studies nor her personal hygiene, Chiaki denies her affections again and again.

But Chiaki and Nodame complete each other in ways no other can, a musical compliment that neither of them can completely escape entirely. Watching them grow as people and musicians, and even as a couple, is an interesting ride." -- Anidb.net

Most fellow forumites should find it appealing. Watch it.
By the way I've listened to the Pathetique 2nd movement countless times and this one . . . gets my first thumbs up.

Chiaki thought to himself as he listened: "Cantabile . . . she's playing it like a song." -_-

Heh, this is one of my favourites. I've seen the live action as well, which is equally as good as the anime.

A little sidestory on the Pathetique, the way Nodame plays it in the anime version was notable unique from my point of view, as it's definitely different then how I learned to play it, so one day I started playing it similar to the way she does while waiting for my teacher to arrive and she heard it, had a very odd reaction to it, she thought it was very strange. But she took a liking for it a bit later...

Good series....but the live action is worth it because of the orchestra shots alone (the anime uses still images whenever the orchestra plays).

I've actually seen the drama version of it with japanese actors. The girl looks totally doshed but the guy is very good looking~

And I agree the orchestra in live action is cute~ Specially when they were in black t-shirts~

Ah, I was looking for Rachmaninov videos on Youtube and I came across episode 11 when they play the Rach Concerto No. 2. I feel in love with it at that second.

I'm gonna start watching it when I get the chance. And maybe order the Manga as well. ^_^

The same day the fansubs for the first episode was out I checked it out. I love music-related anime and manga so obviously I had to check it out. I had fallen in love with the series by the end of the opening.

I would like to see the live action and as soon as I'm not in a money debt to my mother, I'll buy the manga.

live action is great, the manga has horrible art work, the story is still good though~

Especially on these forums. I'm not sure why this isn't the most popular on this board ^_^

I just watched the opening song, and I freaking loved it. It's so happy and pro-music! XD

I'm gonna check out the show tomorrow.

Edit: I love this show so much. O:
It makes me want to play piano all day long! So great!

(I'm right now at Lesson 11)

This show has really inspired me to practice to my fullest extent, and get all the troubled areas in my playing; mainly, practice for 3-5 hours straight. :heh:

Anyway, this show also makes me laugh hysterically at times, and also has a great message/theme at the end of each episode.

I just finished the J-Drama of this, sine the last episodes of the anime aren't subbed yet.

Great ending, look forward to the Anime's 'real' version if it's any different from the Real Life depection

The last episode is subbed. Guess it depends on where you see it from. Reading online manga now.

I just finished the anime, and, as I expected, it was pretty good. =D I absolutely love the voice actors for Nodame and Chiaki! Also, this series really did inspire me to start playing more classical pieces. (Heck, I'm playing more than ever now! 'Sup, Pathetique, Movement 2!) The musical interpretation of many of the pieces played in this series were also very nice.

I'm currently at episode 7 of the live action. While I did find this one to be much funnier than the anime, I felt that the anime handled Chiaki's Rachmaninov performance much better. The anime version was much more moving, although it was nice to see an actual performance of the piece. Also, Stresemann reminded me a lot of Jack Sparrow....XD

So all in all, this was a pretty enjoyable series. While it wasn't enough to make my top three list, it was still good.

I so Love Chickis Voice Actor... That might be because I'm a huge fan of his, but that's another story. However, I think Tomokazu Seki (the voice actor of Chiaki) was a good choice for Chiaki, not only because I'm a fan of his, but for oher reasons too.

I so need to watch the Live Action now while I still have time.

Personally, I liked the Live Action J-Dorama better than the Anime. Although the Real Life portration of the Anime leaves out some events, it gives you the feeling that this is reality, even though I think getting thrown into a boulder would [basically] kill you. XD

the anime is actually quite interesting i seem to have found out
although seeing live people play instruments is nice and i really loved sakura from the live and her insanely high pitched voice, i must say the anime isn't half bad

the anime isn't bad, not bad at all.
I saw the raw of Nodame Cantabile Live Action the day before yesterday. (I had my problems understand some things, because my Jpanese is still quite low leveled) It was so funny! Some things was wierd though... I started to see it again yesterday with a friend ^_^ She thinks the same things are wierd (and we understand more together and actually we pause the episode to discuss music, japanese, or the actors and actresses or just try to figure out what they just did say.)

I absolutely loved Nodame Cantibile in all its forms! The Live Action was good (But why the pseudo-foreigners?) and I think the casting was brilliant for everyone but possibly Mine-kun and although Chiaki-senpai looked the part (well he is a model) the acting wasn't great.

The Anime is gorgeous. I fell in love with the opening and ending scene; especially the song! Koi ga setsunai to sugu soba de anata to ano yoru!
If my Japanese isn't as rusty as I think it is - then I like the English meaning too.

The manga...hmmm. I love the Manga but it's a bit slow. I keep buying them because I like her style of drawing; not overly shojo-esque, and because I want to know what's happening!! But other than that - they're slow and by themselves no particular volume stands out.

Anyway 'Mukya' is the best sound effect in the Japanese vocabulary.
