View Full Version : Piano- composing/arranging for 3 or 2 staves?

There are two files attached... one is a PDF and one is a .mus file...

As some may notice, the notation is messy at some spots. What I'm wondering is, do I need to add a 3rd staff at those spots (specifically meas. 14-27)? :\

If I don't, in what case(s) would I need to add a 3rd staff?

I haven't played piano much, so... don't assume anything. But I know it's playable (or, at least, I think so  ).

Thanks to whoever can help...

A third Staff would only be needed if the pianist should be interpreting the staff like another hand is playing it. (See Liszt's Etude, "Mazeppa"). Or if the part is too complicated, and has two stanzas/staffs for each hand (See Rachmaninoff's Prelude "Bells of Moscow").

Those are pretty simple parts for two staves.

Hope this clears it up a sinch.

What he said.

Pianists hardly ever see three or more staves, so I wouldn't worry about it. That piece is simple enough for two.

Two is fine. I've rarely ever seen more than two staves used.

(And yes, it's playable. :P)

Three staves are used for two things (unless otherwise indicated): a) ossia: showing how to play an ornament or a special notation b) a pedal drone on the third staff.
