Plot:Tomoya Okazaki is a third year student labelled as a delinquent. Everything seems to be unchanging for his school life until he meets Nagisa, and Tomoya finds that his life is about to change. He starts to have dreams of a bleak world and meets a girl who has the ability to fuse junk together in order to create things, and doing so, creates a body out of junk for him. He is then reborn into this empty world and follows around the girl, the only two existences who are "alive".

Well, it was about 12 episodes for the Fuko arc. There's six girls, two are minor. 4x12 = 48 => 52. I can see it happening very easily.

But on topic, this show is seriously one of the best I've seen... It'll probably go down as one of my all time favorites. Although it would be awesome, I doubt there would be 52 episodes to this series, as they're on the last nagisa arc now, and it's only 20.

Any recommendation on Kanon and Air? I've heard that they're very similar to Clannad, and Kanon 2006 in particular I've heard alot of good things about.

Oh ya, and the OP to Clannad is starting to grow on me...

InfinityEX

Kanon and Air is totally different to Clannad. Not entirely though, but the story focuses more on a "glimmer of hope" storyline. Not as much comedy as Clannad but the story makes up for it. I warn you though, Air and Kanon left me crying when Clannad left me crying with laughter x]

M
March 9th, 2008, 02:57 pm
Don't be too harsh on Kanon. While it isn't a funny as Clannad, it does have quite a bit of "cute" humor.

Air TV is an exellent series that flows through three arcs telling one story twice, and a back-backstory once. Even though the plot is full of holes (fecking 13 12 episodes should have been 24), it's something worth the watch.

Similarly with Kanon. It also falls in the same category as Air TV, only with more development. The Kanon series tends to drag on, but it doesn't seem like it is too short. It also didn't fall into the trap its predecessor did -- characters magically disappearing when it's not their turn -- and it also brought about an excellent story.

My honest order of Greatness is as follows:

Kanon 2006
Air TV
Clannad
Kanon 2002

So if you liked Clannad, I'm certain you'll at least find some glimmer in Air and Kanon.

Actually, this is going to sound odd, but I really like Sunohara. He might be pretty pathetic at times, but he's not an idiot when it comes to the whole harem thing. I'd have gotten mad a long time ago if I took this much abuse from Tomoya =)

Nagisa is cool too.

Like the Air movie, it mostly focuses on the two main characters but Sunohara is in there a lot. it is really different from the tv series but i give it about 8 or 9 out of 10 points.
don't expect to see much of Fujibayashi Kyou, Ichinose Kotomi, Sakagami Tomoyo. Yes. I got the manga and all if you want it pm me. It's called Tomoyo After, I played it and....its an EROGE novel, unlike Clannad. It's about Tomyo's relationship with Okazaki after they graduate.

The Visual Novel is quite standard of Key's works...And I won't spoil much but... It gets interesting x]....

Tomoyo After. From what I understand, it was subpar to other KEY VNs. Then again, this was designed as an add on.

Note that, unlike clannad, Tomoyo After is classified Hentai, and not Ecchi.

It covers the entire Nagisa arc, and only the Nagisa arc, so it would be good for you not to watch it until the TV series is over. They took different routes in the story too. The movie rushed and stretched. A lot. There were many times where I wish they didn't focus on the

I've never liked Toei's artstyle, either. It left me wanting more general movement, and less focused movement. Then again, that's a studio war that's been going on for a few years now. As InfinityEX, the art was emphasized a bit too much. I wouldn't say that they relied on special effects, but it was clear they wanted to change up the art style every 10 minutes.

The only thing I really liked about the movie was the fact that it was more pinpoint than the TV arc. Yet that's the writer's job to serialize. The ending to this took on mixed feelings as KEY does so well in its script production -- Well done Maeda! You've caught a leaf that Hisaya painfully obtained; I don't see Tonogawa being able to surpass either of these two writers, then again, he could take up the pen. That would create quite an upstir.

Also as InfinityEX said, I was highly depressed to see that the characters personalities remained quite flat. There was a bit of change at the end of the movie, but overall, they didn't change. The only thing I was amazed about was Tomoya's father was. I think he was the only character that something changing, and he only got 7 minutes in the movie.

Overall, though with much negative feelings to the movie's production and implementation, I found it highly enjoyable. Quite frankly, that's all that matters.

The after story is wayyy too short to be a second season.

This is a major spoiler, click to read at your own risk!

If you had seen the movie, it is OK to read.
You have been warned The OVA follows the story of Nagisa's death and Ushio's birth...That type of story can easily fit into a single 30 minute episode, After that it goes onto Tomoyo After and that is basically the 2nd season of Clannad.
If Key decides to go into making a Tomoyo After anime, instead of shitty Planetarian (the visual was OK, but for it to be an anime...no fanservice...), Then we'll have a second season.

Gotank

Aww, I for one don't mind watching anime that don't contain fanservice.... To be honest, Clannad and Kanon each only had like 2 or 3 fanservice scenes at most. Guess it depends on what you classify as fanservice.

From what I've heard and from reading the synopsis, Planetarian seems to deal with much deeper themes, and take on a pessimistic view of the world, which can potentially be made into a very ground breaking series.

I too agree that there doesn't seem to be enough of Nagisa material to make a full second season out of. And switching to Tomoyo After would put it at odds with the first season. But I don't think KyoAni's given us any reason to doubt their competence yet.

There DEFINITELY is going to be a second season of Clannad though. It was officially announced on the end of episode 23, much like how Clannad was announced at the end of Kanon's last episode.

This spoils the ENTIRE story, as it encompasses all of the after story's events:
You'd be surprised how long the after story is. I mean... There's Graduation, everyone moving away, Ushio's birth, Nagisa's death, Tomoya's break down causing Ushio to go with Nagisa's parents, the trick to get Ushio and Tomoya together, Ushio's death, Tomoya's suicide, then the vision's story, and everyone's rebirth. All while going through time lapses with everyone's distant pasts. I could see all of that being around 12 episodes.

Conclusion:
If Naruto had a baseball match it'll last 2(6) eps. - Unenjoyable
If Clannad expanded the baseball match in 2 episodes. - I don't care, still good. But this 1 ep was too fast paced and many cuts... too much if compared to 1st season Clannad. Then again it only has 13 episodes... *sigh*

The last episode of the main story wasn't as emotional as some of the others in the series so it disappointed me a bit in that way (I had tissues ready and everything!), and the little epilogue part as a bit too long I thought.

However, overall I have loved this series, as even though sometimes it was really emotional other times it was just really funny too. It's not like one of those over-the-top comedy series, but it's funny because you learn to like each of the characters and get used to them.

One of my favourite series :) Only wished that Tomoyo had more of a part in the main story!

Yeah, now that I look back into it, I agree with Spoony. Tomoyo wasn't even a part of After Story that much (if not at all) and she only shows up in the ending montage of "Chiisana Tenohira"

I do have to say that the second season was a major letdown. The first half of the second season felt like filler, and after the first turn of depression, the story picked up the reins again. Sadly too many different things were done rather than being focused, and when they came back into focus, it was too late to establish the plot again as they did before.

Overall the anime is great, but I think that Kyoto Animation is losing their touch, and are starting to destroy epics.

Episode 24 of the first season. It was an OVA episode that was central to the Tomoyo arc.

And it sucked major cut myself emo stuff. :sigh:

The Tomoyo After episode didn't do it for me really. Tomoya should always have gone with Nagisa, I just wanted to see more of Tomoyo that's all. Not in the romantic kinda way like in that episode, with the "oh, we shouldn't go out, but we're actually madly in love" stuff.

Don't you mean Tomoya? Tomoyo is the girl who beats up Sunihara(don't think i spelled it right) all the time.

Nope, she said it right. Tomoyo After is an extra episode based off of the spinoff of Clannad game with the same title. The story is focused on Tomoyo as the primary heroine instead of Nagisa; where Tomoya and Tomoyo had a child called Tomo (god damn it, stop with the name puns already Jun! Then again, nothing's worse than Baria Ago's Shuffle). Anyways, it's an entire game to itself. A lot of fans liked Tomoyo After better than the original Clannad (myself being one of them), not to discredit the original story.

I actually liked After Story a lot, I thought it was a very good follow up to to the original series. Sure it's different because it's mostly not in high school but most of life isn't in high school either.

I frikkin loved it much better! Nagisa just didn't sit right with Tomoya...

You are right... Now that you mention about it. There has to be someone that's a better pair with Nagisa. :\

I really did wish Tomoyo and Tomoya got together in the show, but thinking about it, Tomoya and Kyou would probably make the best match.
