How does someone play this fast on the piano?
How is it possible for someone to do so many octaves so precisely?

@_@ Wow.. that was really cool... I wish the recording came out better, but other than that, they played that song well...

I hate to burst the bubble but this guy is not playing fast. At least not fast enough to awe over. If you want to hit octaves pricely then just lock your wrist once you hit the first octave. Because the distance between your thumb and your pinky won't change after that, no matter what you press, it will be octaves. This probably should be in the music descussion thread.

Youtube some Yundi Li or any other professional pianist videos and you'll really see speed and accuracy lol.

Simple, try five years of playing piano. Two if you're gifted enough or practice real hard. It's all in muscle memory.

 Indeed! I just watched a guy play on Youtube... it's crazy.. you could just imagine the guy laughing hysterically as he plays it.

Otherwise, this guy plays *pretty* fast, too.

I don't think this topic is really about composition, I suggest this topic to be moved to the Music Discussion section. ._.

Composition: Discuss with fellow composers, ask advise, and share compositions

I was asking for advice on how to play octaves like that person did in the video. Thanks for the help everyone n_n

But this place is for compositions, and composing means writing music, not PERFORMING or PLAYING music.

It also said ask for advice...so thats why I put it in here....but someone can move it to the music section if they want to though.

Locking the wrist can get you some speed on the front end, but it will be bad for your hand in the long run. When practicing octave runs, also practice relaxing the hand after every single stroke. Sure, you'll have to practice more, but you can get up to the same speed, and without the threat of injury several years from now. What's important is that you learn what an octave "feels" like so that you can stretch your hand to that interval automatically when needed, and retract it when you're done.

Besides, if you want voicing, legato, and all of that good stuff in your octave run, you might need to alternate 1-5s with 1-4s ;)

I was actually going to post this after but I forgot to lol. Initially, for me, I used locked wrist and my wrist then became more and more relaxed as I used it more. I still tend to lock it during fast octave passages though. It's still a good way to find the distance. Once you play it often enough, your hand just goes to it without any thought.

However, if you feel your forearm starting to hurt, stop immediately! Give it an hour or so's rest for it to recover or play some slower songs before attempting the octaves again. If you find your wrist hurting again, you should stop the practice for octaves for the day. Do not ignore this advice. If you do, you may never be able to touch another instrument for the rest of your life.

Should I stop if my pinky is starting to hurt or it starts to feel weird?

Minori

I'd say so. The last thing you want to do is hurt yourself either playing the wrong way or straining it. ><

Click on the link on my siggy, then search through the first few pages. (As a side note, I should probably move all of the transcriptions on that thread into the first post...)
