Again, I was chatting with good ol' Al on MSN about music and whatnot until we came across a very interesting topic that kind of intrigued my sense of curiosity.

I keep things seemingly simple, but in reality, it's more complicated beneath the surface. -Al

That's Al's music philosophy. So basically: what does your music depict? What's the true meaning of your music? Why is your music like what it is? What thoughts do you have behind your music? Do you think all music is based on the composer's musical philosophy?

My music is not about expressing emotions, or telling a story. In fact, I want the audience to create their own emotions and their own stories about my music. - Me

I think this will make some interesting discussions relating life to music. I guess music serves more than just humans' entertainment and knowledge fulfillment purposes. So what are your musical philosophies?

Good topic.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
What does your music depict?
About 98% of the songs I made are trying to express emotions.
What's the true meaning of your music?
Sadness...
Why is your music like what it is?
This is something I do not want to reveal too much of. I'll say that a year ago, I went through such tough times, and I was very sad during this time.
What thoughts do you have behind your music?
It varies most of the time; usually, I don't think that my songs aren't good enough.
Do you think all music is based on the composer's musical philosophy?
Most, but to me, not all of the time.
Music is an entertainment. It can be romantic, conveying the feeling of love (frustration and excitement). Or it can simply be a dance or a barcarolle. Composers wrote music based on their experiences and imaginations, Mozart wrote most of his piano duets for himself and his older sister to perform. Being able to enjoy listening is very important. However performers must take music seriously and be able to play it very well, even if they do not like the music they are playing.
Music is an entertainment.
Well, the thing that I'm trying to bring up in this thread is the point that other than entertainment, what is music and what is the purpose of your music? So I guess you read my post wrong or something.
what does your music depict?
Most of the time power. The struggles of man through war, peace, and everyday life...at least this is where I hope to be one day.
What's the true meaning of your music?
Power and Majesty
Why is your music like what it is?
I have had a very supportive family in my entire music career. It all started on my first day when my parents took me home from the hospital, my father played Hallelujah Chorus the entire way home. Most of the time my father and I enjoy listening to classical music together when riding in the car. He would always play these pieces that just seemed to make you proud to be a human and alive. Recently, I feel motivated by the works of Michael Giacchino.
What thoughts do you have behind your music?
My thoughts are damn you better sound good to someone else besides me! XD but seriously, I like to think of the unsung heroes when I compose. There stories will never be told to a soul. The least I can do is pay tribute to them with my talents.
Do you think all music is based on the composer's musical philosophy?
Of course! It would not be their work if they didn't! Everyone needs to leave some kind of mark on their music to let the world know that this is "how they roll." The composer is always trying to convey their ideas on some subject, it could be a suspenseful scene from a movie or it could just even be for the simple reason of how they feel about music themselves.
But music it is an entertainment to me.
What music depict to me. An art.
True meaning? Entertainment, relaxation.
Why is your music like what it is? I had been exposed to classical music since young, and i love solo works, becos they are just simply impressive.
Do you think all music is based on the composer's musical philosophy? Not neccessary, but to romantic composers, yes.
Ooh some very interesting philosophies here :)
"What does your music depict? What's the true meaning of your music? Why is your music like what it is? What thoughts do you have behind your music? Do you think all music is based on the composer's musical philosophy?"
Well, I'm pretty moody, so it depends on what mood I'm in.
My music has a meaning, it's just that I don't find out until after I make it. For example, the second to the last piece I posted up, I found out it was influenced by my band's two Parade of Bands pieces, and another one was influenced by the limerence I was experiencing at the time (and still am :wub: ).
I think it's because of the music I listen to. We're all influenced that way whether we know it or not. A musical idea from a song could be stored by our brain and suddenly wash up a few years later as an "idea."
I don't know, I just try to put myself in the audience's view and am constantly asking some friends to listen to my pieces to get their input as to whether it's enjoyable or not.
Definitely. Some people just don't have one or don't know it, haha.
What does your music depict?
Generally, my music depicts emotions that I cannot express using words or other ways of communication. I like to also depict a style that reflects influences such as the virtuosic masters of the likeness of Rachmaninoff, Liszt, Chopin and Scriabin. Being another one of the few composers; The ones that have found the hidden chest that holds the heart of the piano--and then try to master its powers.
What's the true meaning of your music?
The true meaning of my music is (as said before) is me expressing a story or picture being presented in music notes. Each melody and harmony will somehow contribute to what I am saying in the piece. The other meaning is for the performer/s to express themselves to what it says to them as well (how the interpret it).
Why is your music like what it is?
Because I have a dream to master not only a career, but to also master the capabilities of sound itself.
What thoughts do you have behind your music?
Most of the time it’s expression in the notes, but even expression takes a lot of criticism. I tend to make many drafts of pieces, but I just don’t have the time to finish them and present them to people. So I guess another big part of it is lament, since I can’t finish ’writing down my emotions, stories, poems and interpretations.’
Do you think all music is based on the composer's musical philosophy?
That’s sort of a loaded question. I think most of it is since it’s their own creations, but also composer’s have that tiny, tiny, tiny thing in the back of their head to see from another person’s view on how his own created can be interpreted. Only few didn’t have that ‘social’ acceptance like Beethoven, Debussy, Mozart--just to name a few.
~~
I might re-answer the questions later. Mainly because they are sort of loaded.
What does your music depict?
Most of my music depicts fear, solace, excitement, and anger
What's the true meaning of your music?
I like to tell scary stories through my music
Why is your music like what it is?
I've always loved the sound of a scary dissonance, or a majestic soaring feel. I also can get very paranoid about things, so expressing fear and solace through music is a fun way to fight it. I'm a really fun outgoing person so depicting excitement helps share it with others.
What thoughts do you have behind your music?
Sometimes I hate how I can't find the right harmony so I think the song just doesn't sound right, and sometimes I'm very proud of a particular composition and then somebody will say "That sucked"
Do you think all music is based on the composer's musical philosophy?
Well, no duh, do I even need an explanation?
"Music is the one incorporeal entrance into the higher world of knowledge which comprehends mankind but which mankind cannot comprehend" ~Ludwig van Beethoven~
That sums up my musical philosophy in a box music is not mean to be understood it is meant to invoke power and feeling that the composer will convey to the others who hear it. Thoose who claim to understand music truly may on a technical level but no-one truly comprehends what the composer was thinking when they put their pen (or mouse) to the paper (or screen). Music (depending on the music that you like) is meant to speak to us on a level that we cannot understand but all at the same time we know it.
My musical philosphy: "do it right, and perfect it,but remeber that the rules are only a guideline" ~Me~
