I think conflict is a great thing for us humans, but by itself, its a bad thing. What do you people believe? (And admins/mods, do not lock this; I am making this as a serious discussion, and you haven't heard my reasoning yet, which I will give later.)

Conflict, its anything that can be an obstacle to you...let me use dictionary.com to help me:

To maintain a conflict; to contend; to engage in strife or opposition; to struggle.
To fight; contend; contest; resist; struggle; combat; strive; battle.

Yes, a battle can have conflict, as the conflict occuring is the other side fighting you. All stories have conflict, its the characters that are evil, bad, etc. Its hard for me to explain conflict to you.....

You can't expect everything to get along. Conflict is inevitable, even if you do try to avoid it. It can be good, or bad, depending on what the results are.

I tend to avoid conflicts, but I do realize they are sometimes inevitable. As long as it can be dealt with in a good way, and the issues are resolved such that both parties end up relatively happy, then sure, it works for me.

Conflict is needed for damage, damage is needed for repair, and from repair a greater, stronger person emerges.

If you do not have any conflicts how can you grow as a person?

Some conflics are good while others are bad..
for those who watched Evangelion, remember "Hedgehog's Dilemma" :heh:

What Mies said. Conflict causes you to go through different situations, go through changes, and grow as a stronger person. ^_^

A veteran is much "fuller" than a 'lesser'.
So, I say conflict in general is a good thing, though alot of them can be pretty bad

It is purely our perception of morality, or what we decide is right or wrong.

Human as every other creature needs to fight for survival. I believe wars satisfy our natural need for these things

Are you talking about arguing? because me and my friends like to argue with each other about stuff because it's fun.

Nightmare

Well, there is conflict in arguing also, but conflict itself is not arguing.

An interesting question is whether we need conflict to survive or whether conflict is a byproduct of our survival. I'm probably getting a little too philosiphical here but I'll continue anyway.

It's obvious that conflict arises with any living thing merely because of survival. Everything wants to survive and is usually pretty willing to screw something else over to do so. When viewed in that light it seems obvious that conflict is just a byproduct.

However, it also should be looked at whether we sould survive without the benefits of conflict. As mentioned before conflict leads to bettering ourselves (personally or as a society) and while this isn't necessarily going to ensure our survival or be needed to survive, it's always possible that the skills learned through one conflict may help in another. After adding this piece of information in there definitely isn't a clear solution any more.

Well, that about sums up that idea, does anyone have any ideas on the basic question?

well, from the economic view point, conflicts are good, since the bring about progress (technological). And, "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger", so it also has a positive effect for the people. However, those are the only two benefits - and the negative side of conflict is huge...

I don't know about conflict.. but opposition is necessary, just think of all the major companies in the world. Because of opposition, prices go down, and we (the consumers) get better products.

Well, without conflict, life would be boring. Imagine if nothing went wrong in your life. And I do believe that it makes you stronger because conflict create experiences that "teaches you a lesson." And most people should learn from that. And in a world like this one, conflict is inevitable.

In my opinion, conflict is the meaning of life. Pretty much EVERYTHING is based on conflict if you look at it. Conflicts, contradiction, opposites....Everything has and oppositte. To do or not to do. If you think about it is makes sense. (I discovered this yesterday! ^^)

Sure peace is a nice thing to have but the world needs conflicts. sure I'm not saying go out and get into a war with everybody you disagree with. Really war is inebidable but I don't think war really solves problems with morals and stuff like that. because a war doesn't desside who is right or wrong. if it did we would already have all the answers in the univerese on conflicts a good debate is what is needed not a fight. if I made any sense from my baboling.
