Hi guys

It has taken my cousin and myself a long time to finally come up the composition for our school house chant song. Of course, I am not a singer type (nor is my cousin) so we only record his piano solo. It is still not complete so I would like to ask you guys for advice and suggestions. (Especially the IB Music population:) )

Hope you enjoy the song!

Ah, this is wonderful! I don't have any comments on it at all, except that I would love to hear it with vocals, if that's how it's meant to be heard. :P

That would be me, I suppose. I think that it's good, but I would put in a modulation, and maybe vary the accompaniment style more. Some of the time signature transitions (edit: is that what it was or just weird tempo variations?) were way weird, though. What other songs are you planning on doing for your internal assessments?

Haha! This most of this piece really reminds me of one of my composition sets that I'm making; "Modern Pieces for the Piano."

I like it, good interlude/prelude you've made here. I would definately re-do your opening around 1:20, and work out some chords because I can hear one note doesn't compliment the bottom very well (and I'm not talking about dissonance). Also, in some places it's good, but keep the tempo 'fairly' straight-forward. And work on the ending flourish.

Good job, I wish to hear more.

lol, I admit that I improvised many parts towards the end because of stage fright. But I will take a proper recording soon (with least mistake...I hope).

I was asked to compose a song for my cousin's game, (I believe its RPG), for a Gothic Church Theme, I'll be posting what I come up with soon.

(IB note: I am using both compositions for 'variation' composition assessment. And then perform it live. Completing two internal assessment in one go! lol)

My first draft , In sanctus (Unholy). This song is composed as a soundtrack for the scene when the main character enters a gothic church. But I think its still miss some "Gothic" element, but I really don't know what is missing.

Wait, do you not have to record your compositions live? I thought you did. That's a relief.

I highly doubt it's possible to be recorded live without at least 2 sets of tubular bells with synchronized robots playing them in tune. This is largely due to the fact that tubular bells or church bells cannot be played like a piano or whatever that you're making it play in that midi. Secondly, your harmony seems a little dull, with the repetition of all those same chords.

Ah, I think there is a misunderstanding. I am using the House chant for internal assessment. In Sanctus is only for the game, not for assessment, lol.

And I guess you must already have more than enough recording of your composition in your forum that there should be no worries. lol

I really agree it sounds repetitive. I'll try to make a variation for some part then. But what is the most commonly used instrument for gothic music? (or church music).

Human voice (if you're being totally authentic).

For the In Sanctus, I would consider replacing the bells with organ. Dense chords and tubular bells don't go together - they have so many overtones that basically any interval but octaves will sound rather messed up. Other than that, I think it makes a really nice background chant.

This is an exceptionally beautiful and well writted piece! Now it's time to add stuff =D. Try adding a cello or upper octave bass undertone around midway through the song. Also, giving the melody to a violin and have the piano support with chords loudly and add in harmony on the right hand piano at the end of the song, would give it a really beautiful and powerful feel I think. Post it on this thread if you add stuff. Otherwise, great work!
