Because it's a communistic dictatorship and they only use it as propaganda to make themselves look better.
Pretty much like when the plays were held in Nazi Germany.

*sigh* At that time the Nazi's had not yet started the second world war and whatever. And of course Hitler was alive in 1936, how could he be a dictator between 1940 and 1945 if he'd be 4 years max? D'uh...
@NainamoR: How is it a harsh statement? I'm not saying the Chinese government is killing jews for no reason, but the only reason they want the olympics so badly is so they can make themselves look good. Good thing that because with all the shit going on in Tibet, combined with all the attention generated by the olympics, generates the complete opposite result for China.

Olympics is supposed to be non-political but people(politicians) just like dragging politics into it. Hilter was alive of course.....
China is moving towards a more capitalistic political system. And so what if people boycott olympics, do you think that Tibet will suddenly be independent again? But one good reason why they should boycott it, as in the competitors, is due to the horrible hygiene standards, it is a plot to get all the compeitiors there, feed them contaminated food. Cardboard buns anyone?

And what country isn't trying to make themselves look good with hosting the Olympics?
I mostly agree with Meim on this matter. The propaganda generated against China isn't all as accurate as people would like you to believe, and much of it coming from the Falun Gong, which is a religious cult deeply affiliated with politics.
But hygene standard in China does warrant some consideration, although I hear that's been the focus of the Olympic organizers in China for the past few years now, so it should probably exceed our expectations.

I just think letting china host the olympics is like saying "sure, you can abuse people and ignore human rights, but here's the biggest event of the world, enjoy"
Any country that violates humand rights the way china does shouldn't even be allowed to participate in the olympics (or any even for that matter).

How about freedom of speech and access to information? Internet users in China have blocked access to countless websites. Right now, I believe China is working on modifying the access for athletes who wish to blog about their experiences. I don't know how well it'll be pulled off.

Erm, whether China is capitalistic or not has nothing to do with it. I mean that China's a dictatorship and anyone who criticizes the government risks being put in jail or put to death.
Freedom of speech is something they don't know in China. Access to information, like, try looking up specific wikipedia pages while you're in China. Ones that could make the government look bad. You won't get to them.
Gotank
April 9th, 2008, 09:37 pm
No no no, China is NOT a dictatorship. It was quite a few decades ago, but now it's somewhat like the political system in the US. Same with the whole freedom of speech and criticism of government beliefs. These are outdated beliefs of China that held true like half a century ago, but not anymore. People get jailed if they riot, but not for the typical verbal criticism most people are familiar with. I have not heard of anyone getting put to death for such trivial matters.
Mind you, I'm not saying that the freedoms in China is equivalent to that in western countries, but it's also much better than people's impressions.
I'm unsure about the internet limitations, but as far as I can tell China's internet community is extremely vibrant and for the most part unlimited, and internet Chinese media accessible to everyone constantly bring forth various problems the public perceives in the Chinese society. It would seem odd that English wikipedia pages would be filtered out while criticism in the native language remains untouched.
Regarding freedom of speech, it's not like any country in the world have full freedom of speech. America limits disorderly conduct within vicinity of funeral events, for example. Although views in China are more conservative than elsewhere, it's still a far cry from 0 freedom.
Finally, if China indeed has such a government controlled society, they would not allow so many people to emigrate into other countries, because it would severely threaten their oppression attempts. It would be like North Korea, where influx and outflux of people are scarce.

Lol, you've been brainwashed. Not too long ago someone was put in prison because he critizised the government. China's a dictatorship, it does not have free elections, there is heavy censorship, the Chinese government controls the media and there is only one political party of any meaning: the communist party.
Gotank
April 10th, 2008, 01:20 am
I highly doubt it's a case of brainwashing, having lived in China and North America for almost equal amounts of time, I can conclude quite a bit from comparisons of lifestyles, and as far as I can tell, not much is different. A few more trees over here maybe =)
I think we must define a dictatorship in that case. I don't consider any political system where the chief in command changes on a regular basis to be a dictatorship. Additionally, there are systems of checks and balances in the government as well, much like, although probably inferior, to the system in the west.

olympics and politics don't go together, if you wanna boycott China do it some other time. Yeah the world knows Chinese civil treatment sucks balls but it's not just Tibet that's poor or anything, there's way too many people to give welfare like those in Europe.
In addition why don't people boycott Olympics in America? Didn't they take Hawaii against their will and over populate it with Westerns? The only reason why Hawaii didn't break out into revolution is cos they all frikin died off. At least the Tibetans are still alive. Annnnd it's not like Tibet is fully seperate from Chinese, what defines a nation can be like their culture and religion and Tibet's Buddhist temples/ practices are paramount to Chinese culture.
It is also unfair and hypocritical of European nations to criticize China because who went out and imperialized/colonized the world? The Europeans. China is one of the largest most populated regions of the world, there are lots of people represented by the country so it is also unfair how like the US had the Olympics twice, Korea had it, Germany, and Russia and China hasnt, so is it fair to go and point fingers and take away the pride of such a large population?
Frankly I think people have too much time on their hand, Tibet wants freedom because the Chinese mistreats them? Give the Chinese time to change their civil laws. If Tibet wants to be free for the nationalism think how their economy will collapse, they arn't very productive agriculturally nor industrially nor technologically NOR militarily. So what? European nations will all of the sudden donate all of their money to Tibet? Cos the US sure as hella can't.
And what about other global events? Yeah? Main point. Olympics in China has nothing to do with Politics. It's a sign of peace between nations yes, if that counts as political, and the spirit of competition.
Asher
April 15th, 2008, 07:34 am
*claps for Eternal* Very well said. It's kinda like saying, before asking China to free Tibet, ask all the Europeans who colonises all over the world to bugger off first. China is made up of more than 50 provinces, each with it's own distinct cultures and practices, one of which is Tibet. True, China could deal with it better and stop trying to save place, but it's all overrated, seriously. I swear, most of the protestors don't even know what they're protesting about.
Oh, and I like to watch the diving and gymnastic events.

By not attending the opening ceremony you appease the people who think that their opinion actually matters (despite it not [stfu, Richard Gere!]) and you don't force the athletes to give up four years of their life. People think athletes are these grossly overpaid people like base/foot/basketball players. They're NOT. They struggle and fight for a living, and for someone who honestly has no idea what the deal is to say "I think we should boycott..." is just horrible. If you want athletes to boycott, give up your job for four years. No, more than that, because if I decided now that I wanna go to the 2012 Olympics, I couldn't.
It's disgustingly greedy to want the athletes to have to give up their hopes, dreams and livelihood, to prove a point that wouldn't even be properly proven!
That said, my favorite events are swimming (yum, men in speedos) and Javelin (my dad's sport).
Eternal
April 19th, 2008, 10:47 pm

then does it give them the right to criticize or is hypocricy not in the vocabulary.
Im not saying China has the best civil structures but its also not like they're trying to specifically attack the Tibetian. And think about why Tibet wants to be free and it's pros and cons, freeing Tibet has been a long hard subject for China but in the Tibeteans favor really, if they detach themselves from the Chinese there goes their economic and even agricultural necessities, cos gosh knows the US wont help if they do it'll be pretty dumb since the war in iraq drained the living hecks out of the economy and really, how much help could European nations be.
And it's not even the subject of the Tibetian could support themselves like the turks did or something. The actual land cant really be cultivated, plus all the economic buildings belong to the Chinese, they arn't industrialized, and they are a part of China culturally being that they highly represent the Chinese Buddists which a large portion of han Chinese is.

I went to the torch relay today. Loooots of Chinese people, completely outnumbered any protestors (it's funny because most of the pro-Tibet supporters weren't actually Tibetan and I seriously doubt they knew exactly what they were protesting about). There weren't large scale disruptions like overseas, and went pretty smoothly. The final route wasn't changed and it was a generally pretty good overall feeling. I had a good time. It felt like the Olympic spirit is camoing back, if a little bit battered.

This song brings tears to my eyes, Chinese people are really really amped for the Olympics and they are awfully nice, what they want to achieve is a warm feeling that will make people want to stay in China. During Mao's reign China was fully closed doors but after Deng Xiao Ping it was open cept not everyone thought it was okay to come.
I mean the main lyrics to the song is my home is always open to you, I welcome you.

^ Most anime music are actually modified from an original piece.
Not really, just some anime *cough*evangelion*cough* tend to use classical music throughout the series a lot. Most series have original music except for the OP/ED which is usually some J-POP song.

Yes, though it did bring us so much joy making fun of it.
It's just Chinese pride. Who cares about their appearances? Just look at some big opera singers. That's called humility.

I lol'd.
On another note, I watched women's synchronized diving the other day and China is a bunch of cheaters. Germany had an awesome dive and got 6 and 7's while China VERY clearly screwed up BADLY and got 8 and 9's.
This displeases me.

yeah some of the judging in the olympics is bizarre. I was watching some of the gymnastics and the judges were giving out some pretty unfair scores.

^ Yeah I saw that too and the president of the judging committee told them to correct some scores they gave to the US and China teams. Anyone remember seeing that one Swiss wrestler talk off the podium when he got the bronze and dropped it at the ground while he walked away? Now that was one poor sport.

Hehe, there's always a degree of bias when it's judging rather than simply comparing times or something. That's why there are judges from different countries in the first place.
Anyways, I stopped caring about the scores after a while and just decided to enjoy watching people screw up.
And lol at super phelps =D
I was actually thinking of doing one of those for Yuichi from Kanon 2006 in episode 1.

one chinese gymnast didn't plant on the vault cleanly, which is a deduction, then as a result couldn't quite finish her rotatons and flips and thus landed on her KNEES, (emphasis on knees), and still got over a 9, i think she got a bronze medal, yeah she got a bronze...
now i very much believe china dominated the gymnastics, they clearly were the better team, but some of the scores were questionable
