Heh, funny this thread just popped up; I was about to make one with the same idea. I just downloaded...er, bought that "learn to cook!" software for the DS...it looks pretty cool. I'm going to try cooking something with it as soon as I can afford some ingredients (flat broke!), so I'll be sure to post here when I do.

And your dishes look great, Furbob. I like how you took the time to arrange them all nicely. When I start cooking, I can tell I'll feel compelled to do the same. The artist in me demands everything I make looks pretty. It looks like you have a bit of artist in you, too, along with a good amount of chef. Your pictures are making me hungry! =D

Don't you mean cooking mama?
lol, no no. It's that other one..."Can't Decide what to Eat? Cooking Guide!"
It's basically an electronic cook book, with about three hundred recipes from a bunch of different countries. It's pretty cool though, because you can sort recipes by calories, cooking time, skill needed, ingredients, etc etc, and because it kind of walks you through everything, complete with videos ("HOW TO PROPERLY PEEL GARLIC!") and substitute ingredients and such (I don't have sake or mirin at my Stop and Shop, sadly).

So yeah, it has me all excited to try out cooking now, hahah!

I love making lasagne. It's easy and yummy
Damn right! I could eat it all day, if it wouldn't kill me of obesity. XD

Edit: Yay, I made rice and yakitori (Japanese for "chicken and leek on a stick") tonight!
I took a picture with my crappy cell phone camera, so I'll try uploading it later on.
It came out edible, lol. =)
Edit edit:
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/jimthegreat1012/yakitori.jpg?t=1231213080
There, yummy! :3
I wanted to take a nice picture of it on a fancy plate like Furbob, but my house doesn't have any fancy plates in it! D:
So I took the rugged approach, and just took the photo in the pan with my cellphone.

I went to walmart to see if they had any cool looking plates I could use, but they didn't, sadly. And I didn't have a car today, so I couldn't travel anywhere else, so my food wasn't very sexy looking. ;__;

NEXT TIME I'LL MAKE SURE WE EAT ON FANCY PLATES! PRESENTATION IS THE MOST FUN PART OF COOKING! XD

Cooking's fun though, so I'll keep doing it from now on. That was the first dish I ever really cooked, besides like eggs and stuff for breakfast, which don't count...

And mirin is like 10% alcohol. I opened it up and I was like "holy shit, it's Japanese vodka." Smells awful. X3

Mix it with soy sauce, BBQ-sauce and some water in a small bowl -- then boil it all together and then apply to the yakitori =) The alcohol makes a it a bit sweeter... oh, and squeeze a small piece of lemon on top! And by the way yakitori simply means "grilled bird/chicken" =)

Now you made crave for yaki-anything x_x Hungry...

Mm, I ended up mixing mirin, white wine, and soy sauce together for the sauce, with chili powder on the side. It came out alright, but I was thinking maybe some honey or BBQ sauce next time to push it more towards the sweet side. =)

Furbob, still one step ahead of me! I wanted to try dumplings next! XD

Coming from a country where we celebrate Christmas exactly the same way we did yesteryear, you have to explain to me what a cake has to do with Christmas. ;) I'm wondering mainly because here in Japan, they seem to be fond of "Christmas cakes" as well... whereas in Sweden, you'd get your head chopped off if you even attempted to create something such as a Christmas cake. :P

Spoonpuppet
January 13th, 2009, 09:45 pm
It's a cake because it's a cake (I think this one had dried fruit in it). And it's a Christmas one because I made it at Christmas time.

It's not a REAL Christmas cake. Those ones are packed full of dried fruit and sugar and syrup and are sickeningly sweet. Actually that's nearly the same as a Christmas pudding, but that one you set on fire.

I have to agree that Hawaiin pizza is great!
And there's this Italian restaurant near where I live that serves this really weird flat pizza with all lettuce and crap on top of it, complete with oils and such. "Salad pizza," as it's commonly called among my friends. It's one of the best tasting things ever, I swear to God. O:

Spoonpuppet

There's an Italian/American restaurant chain in the UK called Frankie & Benny's, and they do this really nice folded-pizza thing. I think they call it a sicillian... or something like that.
Anyway, you can get a meatball kind where the pizza is folded in half, with the cheese and tomato... and these huge bumps in the dough cos of the giant meatballs inside. It's really good, I recommend it to all meat-eaters, lol.

And this got me thinking, is that what you call a "pizza pie"? What IS a pizza pie anyway? Has anybody made one before?

PorscheGTIII
March 1st, 2009, 11:27 pm
A Pizza pie is just another way of saying pizza.

Also pineapple is awesome on pizza. I wouldn't think to add mushrooms with it though.

And your folded pizza... would you mean a calzone?

Spoonpuppet
March 1st, 2009, 11:30 pm
Ah, yeah, that's it! I think cos on the menu there's a type of "calzone" called .... "Sicciliane"... gah, I don't know. Calzone sounds right then. I'm no pizza expert.

And you can't call normal pizza "pie", because it's not.

This thread is too awesome to fall off the front page! Emergency revival go!
On my quest to not be a fat American, I've recently purchased and received my brand new rice cooker! Behold it in all its glory!
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/jimthegreat1012/RiceCooker.png?t=1237088757
Nice! I made rice with chicken scattered in it today with it. It came out surprisingly well, actually. I thought it would be bland/inedible, since it was just plain chicken and long-grain rice sprinkled with salt and pepper, but it came out pretty good!
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/jimthegreat1012/RiceAndChicken.png?t=1237088757
I can tell I'm going to like this rice cooker. It's very convenient! Just drop stuff into it and press cook! It cooks the rice until it's ready, and then goes into "keep-warm" mode; it's pretty much impossible to screw it up, unless you put way too much (or way too little) water into it. It has a fifteen hour delay timer, settings for white and brown rice, and a "steam cook" mode/steaming basket. Anyway, I'm loving this thing, hahah!

Any rice-cooker owners have any advice/recipes/fun facts they'd like to share?

How much it set you back, I've been thinking of purchasing one.
This one was around $65, I think. They have ones for much cheaper and much more, though. I read a bunch of reviews online, however, and this model seemed to be the best deal; the cheaper ones weren't very good, and the more expensive ones weren't worth the extra money. After using my rice cooker twice, I can safely tell you that it works great. Definitely worth buying. :3

Why wouldn't you just cook rice in an ordinary pot?
1.)Convenience:
With a pot, I have to sit there and make sure the rice is cooking properly, not burning, etc. With a rice cooker, you just press the button and go. You can cook a whole meal just by dumping it into the rice cooker and letting it do it's thing if you so choose; when the food is finished cooking, it goes into warming-mode automatically, keeping the food from becoming over-cooked, while letting you eat it whenever you feel like it. I made the chicken and rice for lunch today, ate some of it, and left the rest of it in the rice cooker in keep-warm mode for five hours. Then I ate the rest of it for dinner, as hot and tasty as when it had finished cooking five hours earlier. Beats the crap out of a pot, in my opinion. XD
2.)Taste!
Whenever I cook rice in a pot, it comes out either too mushy or too dry. The rice cooker has cooked perfectly fluffy rice both times I've used it so far, with no effort on my part. My sister and her boyfriend ate the rice I made last night, and said it was the best rice they'd ever had. They were happy to hear that I was firing it up today, and waited around to eat out of it again. I have to agree with them that it's some of the best rice I've had - I can't think of when I've had better rice, actually. It comes out with the perfect amount of moisture and it's so fluffy! X3

Basically, it cooks food well and with little to no effort. You can cook meat and rice together and steam vegetables at the same time, just by pressing a button, and it comes out better than I'd manage with a pot, hahah. You can cook yourself a full meal without even watching the thing!

Or, if you actually feel like cooking, it's also simply a good help in the kitchen, because like I said, it cooks great rice, vegetables, and meats and keeps them warm indefinitely without burning them. One less thing to worry about if you're cooking a larger meal, you know? =D
Anyway, I need to eat healthier, but sometimes cooking can be a pain in the ass. With this, cooking healthy foods is as easy as cooking bad foods (eg, frozen french-fries), which are generally easier to cook than real meals. Now I have no excuse not to stop eating frozen pizzas and corn-dogs for every meal of the day, lol. :3

So....yeah! Everyone go buy yourselves rice cookers! They're great! X3

I'm reading about herbs and spices right now, so I can start adding a little something to the food I make. We have a giant spice rack in the kitchen with like forty herbs and spices tucked into it, but I have no idea what any of them do. I'm having fun reading about them though; it feels like a real life RPG.

Synthesize: Black Pepper, Salt, Paprika, Turmeric!
Gained spicy rice seasoning!

Or something like that! XD

Edit: The rice came out much better today. Reading about herbs helped!

Ah, crap. I think my bread might have failed. ;__;
It doesn't look like it's rising... :(

I'm going to cook it either way though, so I'll post pictures when it's done. I hope it comes out okay...

Edit: Yup, completely inedible, lol. Also, the bread ripped out of its crunchy crust shell when I cooked it, expanding in a really weird way. I wanted to make a rabbread, but I ended up getting a ribbread. D:
I think I screwed up with the yeast. All the breadtorials said "make sure the water you add is around 110 degrees," but I decided to just put my tap on hot and try that out instead. I didn't think it was hot enough to kill the yeast, but maybe it was. Or maybe it wasn't hot enough? I mixed the yeast and flour together before adding the water, so maybe I needed hotter water... I'm going to buy a thermometer for next time...

Anyway, pictures of my failed bread:

Hey there, HC - saw your bread! Got a yeast tip for you.

Yeast dies at 138 degrees F. It's happiest at about 90 degrees F. You don't need to buy a thermometer, just heat a little water in a pot on the stove top on low. With the back of your hand, test it until it's slightly warmer than you. That is the perfect temperature.

What kind of yeast are you using? Is it fresh? Active dry? Instant?

Also, as far as proofing your bread before baking, here's an easy way to get it to rise quick. It's gonna sound kinda weird, but trust me lol...

Run your shower in the bathroom on HOT so it gets nice and foggy. Then put your bread dough in a bowl, cover with wrap (or a damp towel), and leave it on the bathroom counter. Yeast needs humidity to rise and a hot shower will do the trick :)

Let me know how it goes and if that was helpful.

Thanks for the tips, LS. I'll make sure I put them all to use next time I bake (which will be tomorrow, hahah). For the yeast, I'm using little packets of Active Dry...I hope it rises this time. I think I might've killed it last time...I just ran the tap on hot, so it might've been too much for the little guys. The water's supposed to be just luke-warm then?

...We'll see how it goes tomorrow, I guess. Thanks again for the help, Lovely! XD

Lovely_Spirit
March 29th, 2009, 05:08 am
Not lukewarm, just warmer than you, which means around 100 - 110 degrees. Just remember not to get to 138 degrees! That'll kill it!!

What recipe are you using? And would you happen to know what method it is? I could help you out more if I knew.

I don't know what method that would be, though.

Lovely_Spirit
March 29th, 2009, 07:34 pm
That would be the sponge method. I'm going to re-write the instructions for you. Let me know if my version helps at all :)

1. In a bowl, mix your dry ingredients - flour, sugar, salt. Make sure you mix it up. Salt kills yeast so if it comes in direct contact, your bread won't rise as well.

2. Stir the yeast into the water and oil until it's dissolved. Then add this to your dry ingredients and mix. Let it sit and wait for it to bubble. This is the sponge.

3. When the sponge is ready, add the rest of the flour and knead together. There's something called the "window test" that you should use to make sure you've developed enough gluten into the dough. Just pinch off a piece of dough and stretch it out slowly with your fingers. If it breaks immediately, keep kneading. If not, point it into the light and look for strands in the dough. That's the gluten! If it holds, it's ready.

4. Shape the dough into a bowl and place it in a greased bowl and cover. Time to proof. You'll know it's done proofing when it has doubled in size.

5. The next step is called "punching". This is just to deflate the dough. Please don't actually beat it! This will damage it. Just take it out of the bowl, push down on it to deflate, and then start to knead it onto itself.

6. Divide your dough and place it in greased pans. At this time you'll want to eggwash the top. Then let it proof somewhere warm. No covering this time.

7. Ready to bake! Every oven is different, so your bread may be ready before or after 25 minutes. Just keep an eye on it and look for a golden brown color. To keep the color even, rotate your bread halfway through the baking time.

8. Enjoy!

I hope this is helpful! Good luck!

Well, presentation is one thing...but it's all about how it tastes. My cooking presentation is horrible XD

In fact, too horrible that people often mistake it for something inedible...I call it the "WTF Factor" in my cooking. ie. Something I make looks almost too horrible to even eat but when they do get over the fear of putting it in their mouths, it's like finding a diamond in the rough...or so they say. It's the "WTF Factor" mainly because whenever people see it, they go "WTF?!" and when they taste it, they go "WTF! (in a good way, of course)"

It was a little bit salty (has 30% sodium per serving), and one serving is about the amount in the picture since I had eaten a bit more than half of it by that point (2.5 servings per box). But other than the saltiness, it was alright.

Ooh, I went to a dumpling party not long ago, lol. We had hundreds. The fried ones are much better than the boiled ones, especially if they're nice and crispy on the outside.

I'm going to try to make some cupcakes!! Will report on my progress when I actually get round to it.

I'm cooking tomorrow. Probably just going to be yakitori again though, since I have nothing but chicken in my house. = =;;
Nice dumplings, Furbob. I still need to make some of those!

Edit: Made it, came out a lot better than last time! But I didn't take any pictures. I saved the sauce in the fridge though, so maybe sometime soon. Does anyone know how long the sauce will keep in the fridge? I'm guessing a pretty long time, since the stuff it's made out of lasts pretty much forever:
-soy sauce
-sake
-mirin
-sugar
-honey

That should last....forever, right? It's sealed in a tupaware thing. XD

Oh, and the rice came out a little chewy. Is that because I didn't clean it at all before cooking it? It seems like all the starch on it would be the cause, but I can't be sure.

so hacked up some mushroom, tomato and cos lettuce and shredded some carrot, dumped a can of tuna on top and mix in some balsamic vinegar and huzzah~! LUNCH.

problem was that I opened my pantry and went "WHERE THE FK ARE MY CROUTONS1?1?!/!/!1?!?/!1one!?1/"

Ladies and Gentlemangz~!

My small tutorial on making Chinese Radish/Turnip Cake (Lo Bak Go)
Well, photo quality might not be good since I was cooking and having to stop to grab my phone to take a pic and continue.. plus it was night time so lighting wasnt good

Anyway HERE WE GO. (actually starts when you open the spoiler ^_^)

http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/7149/raddish.jpg

first I hacked up the radish

http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/2080/p2301101957.jpg

then hacked garlic because when frying the shrimp later on, you, your house and your dog will reek of shrimp so the scent from the garlic will cover it up

http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/9550/ingredients.jpg

then hack up some chinese sausage and spring onion.
While doing so, throw dried shrimp in water to hydrate it
and yuss... Miku is in the way >_> while chopping everything I wanted to look at it LOL

http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/2839/p23011019311.jpg

chuck the radish in a pot with water + chicken stock for flavour
then add pepper to spice up the radish

http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/5164/p23011019561.jpg

chuck the sausage in a pan and try to fry out and drain all the fat, or keep the fat and add it in if you want the flavor, but personally I wanted to try to make this as savory as possible

http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/7915/p2301102007.jpg

FRY DEM SHRIMPZ!!@!11!1!/!1// *clears throat* along with the garlic~

http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/1065/p23011020091.jpg

Then add the light green/stalk parts from the spring onion for the scent, dont add the dark green parts yet

http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/7007/p2301102011.jpg

http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/5983/p23011020111.jpg

okay after the radish has been boiled enough for it to be soft and edible, throw all the ingredients in the pot~!

http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/863/p2301102014.jpg

Add rice flour while stirring, do it bit-by-bit so you don't get glutenous lumps!

oh and dont laugh at my apron pl0x. <_<

http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/8471/p2301102018.jpg

You should have a mix looking like this, dont make it too thin but not too thick, well you can have it thick but your choice if you like chewy hard food

http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/7862/p2301102021.jpg

Dump mixture in a tin like this, or in some steaming concoction of a thing you may own

http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/7566/p2301102022.jpg

I was boiling water in a wok before, so dump the tin on top and treat it like a steamer

oh and if you're curious, I was boiling pork bones in that other large pot over there to make watercress soup ^.^

http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/923/p23011020222.jpg

Shut the lid or cover the mix up and leave steaming for 1.5~2 hrs

http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/4425/p2301102033.jpg

While the mixture was steaming I was toasting some sesame seeds to dump on top

http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/548/p2301102126.jpg

After the cake was finished I sprinkled the sesame seeds and leftover spring onion on top~! You can now eat it or keep reading for suggestion~

I forgot to take a fancy plate pic of it mainly because I was uhh, eating it lolol.

but I googled one if you wanted to see

http://static.px.yelp.com/bphoto/oIaOx3jRHP_rrpMazvp78Q/l

you can achieve that fried look from cutting a rectangular chunk and frying it with oil in a fry pan until it looks crunchy enough

THE END <3

Japanese Garlic Fried Rice
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y108/Kaji100/Photos/1214091850.jpg

Basically, in Kamen Rider Den-O, the Owner of the Den-Line, named...Owner often eats fried rice in the most inopportune moments while trying to keep the flag (in my case, toothpick) up without it falling. So I tried the same thing.

The result...

So, my parents went to some airforce party thing tonight, and I saw HCs video, so I decided to try and make it!

I didn't deep fry the pork, I just fried it in a pan, so, it's not all golden looking, though it was still crispy. I didn't have any red peppers or anything else like that, just green peppers and onions.

I wasn't too hot on the sweet and sour sauce. Perhaps its because I didn't put any sake/white wine in it. I dunno, but I think if I make it again I won't put as much soy sauce in it.

lol, nice try whip. Of course you need the sake though. That's what makes it sweat and sour sauce instead of soy sauce. =P
Anyway, I followed the recipe correctly (deep frying and all), and it turned out fucking DELICIOUS. Served it with white rice. I'm gonna start cooking a lot more often. =)

It looked much healthier in real life. This camera has some pretty terrible contrast going on, hahah. So yeah, I'll be trying out this guy's other recipes soon. This one tasted like it came from a chinese restaurant. Nomnomnomnom. =D

Gave me a good excuse to use my new knife, too. Prepping the peppers and onions was extremely satisfying, hahahahah. X3

Edit: Actually, oops. Didn't exactly follow the recipe. I used chicken instead of pork, and added a bit of honey to the sauce for extra sweetness. So I can't technically vouch for the pork recipe I guess, even though I'm sure it's also delicious. The sauce is great!

Also delicious! Next up is caramel chicken! It's a carnival of cooking and everyone is invited!
Still need a better camera though. This one isn't doing any justice to the tasty food.

I forgot to take pictures of it but this is what I made as a snack.

My Spanish style Octopus dish:

Ingredients
1 lbs. of baby octopus
1 cup of red wine (use cheap cooking red wine)
clove of garlic
1 tsp. of salt
1 tsp. of fresh ground pepper
2 tsp. of paprika
1 bay leaf
1 Tblsp of olive oil (doesn't matter if it's extra virgin or regular)
Half a lemon

Braise the baby octopus for 30 minutes with red wine, sprinkle of salt and pepper and 1 bay leaf. Prepare the garlic sauce with 1 tsp. salt and pepper, a clove of garlic (mince it), and 2 tsp. of paprika. Murder it (grind it) in a mortar with a pestle with 2 tblspoon of olive oil. After the octopus has been braised, toss the octopus in a bowl with the sauce and squeeze half a lemon with a pinch of salt while tossing it. Serve on a dish with french bread if desired. Add a parsley leaf if you like on top.

Heheh, maybe. Seafood just creeps me out because you're always eating FULL DEAD BODIES. With beef and poultry and stuff, everything's cut up into neat little strips for you, which are totally unrecognizable as the animal they came from. XD

I dunno!

Imitation crab meat is cut into strips, and they don't look like crab at all, so I guess you could eat that...

^but they usually discard the head of the chicken before putting it out on display?
Unlike in Asian cultures where they hang the whole bird on a hook (http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2008/07/19/article-1036578-0201ADC500000578-276_233x429.jpg) and show the whole world
