I can think of only one thing when it comes to more mainstream but high quality animation: Studio Ghibli. This brings up a really great point which honestly makes some of the things I try to do unnecessary for what you want to do, because our goals are different.
Commercial art has different goals and needs than fine art, and it's just a fact of life. I'm not here to say one is better than the other, because in society there is a distinctive need, place, and importance for both, but when watching an art cartoon vs a more mainstream cartoon, such as Fox and the Hound vs the 1978 Lord of the Rings cartoon; there is a glaringly different objective in each film's purpose, both story and execution related. Sometimes people don't stop and think, why was it made this way, what is the purpose of using this technology or medium, why does the story focus so much on this or that? Generally in most highly produced works of anything in the world there is an answer for those questions (and I mean well worked on, not made in mass quantities), because the people making things have the knowledge and resources to put that kind of thought into their work.

The only high quality animation studio you can think of is Ghibli? Really? You're not very well versed in mainstream art, are you? =P
I'd like to see some examples of "high quality" animation from you...(I'm assuming your examples will look something like this, but you might surprise me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiUarp9jJNg )
And I don't really understand what you're saying with the rest of your post...commercial art aims to make money while fine art doesn't...? That's not really a huge difference at all; you can make money with basically anything as long as you find the right audience for it. I don't think mainstream art is as tied down as you're insinuating. ;)
Keep doing how you do, Ander. XD

The way I see it... There are some things that I am not able to do, so I limit myself to the things that I am comfortable with, or at least do the things that I know I am capable of. Like... if I had a choice... I would love to make things like Avatar, but I don't have the resources to do that nor will my drawings be as good as those who have the skills to make such things.... so I probably will make a stick figure animation, because I know then that it doesn't have to be as fancy as Avatar. Haha. but I guess that's a given, considering the fact that there are places and time for everything.

See:
mainstream but high quality animation
And I want to rephrase "high quality animation" to mean the film as a whole, including the cartooning and story. Some really great avant garde/art house/non-mainstream/high quality animations I like are Fantastic Planet, films by Mamoru Hosoda, Angel's Egg, Hedgehog in the Fog, Madame Tutli-Putli.
I guess what I mean by my ideas of commercial art versus fine art has to do with your target audience. Sometimes people make things to be accessible and liked by the masses (which there isn't any wrong in that), and others want something a bit different that sometimes only college professors and other professionals will enjoy. They both have their place and merit.
And Ander, keep at it. You're a really great artist and only time and persistance can open doors. Everyone has to start somewhere.

high quality animation
Should not exist in the same post. (video of FP (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ys8AkwMRvgo#t=1m10s)). Never before has there been a more awkward representation of Physics and overall environment interaction.

I'm not sure what kind of deep and complex interpretation you can learn from this short animation clip, or what kind of abstract mentality and personal history you can intuit about the creators, or whether professional art critics or highly acclaimed artists with Ph.D's and extensive academic portfolios will think it's worthy of their eye for fine arts...
But I like this bowling scene.

M, I have no reply to your sentiments because you are so right. Taking inspiration from you, I'm requesting that people stop considering William Faulker, Thomas Pynchon, and Charlotte Gilman great writers because they go out of their way to create something unrealistic and awkward.
Zero, I really liked that clip. I wonder if the animators used rotoscoping technique, because the fluidity of the people's movements are so smooth and realistic.
And before anyone else gets all worked up I want to mention that Lil Kim and Cowboy Bebop/Samurai Champloo have been a major focus of coursework. Now, whether or not you think the basis of those studies are legitimate, apparently professors and college have so to the point that money was actually given to teach about it.

Zero... you've read my mind. I do like those kinds of style. but I want to make that in to NINJA BATTU!!!!! hahaha. Anyway.. I wish I had bought Sky Crawlers dvd set and place it next to Last Exile dvd set. I want to be able to draw like them, but my knowledge of body is just... not up to par. What I like the most about the little clip is... that.... it's quite minimalistic.
I get this impression that these are the same guys who drew Naruto.

Well... I finally got a new one... but... stupid scanner doesn't let me scan the full image. Even though the paper fits perfectly... some parts of the lower drawing didn't scan. -_- So I said "whatever"
But anyway... it's a fan art. I think her name is Mari, and she's from the new evangelion series. Hope you like it.^.^

Nice drawing regardless. And you got her name right, just for future reference, lol.

Nice! The proportions are a bit weird though, maybe it's just me... Her head to neck to torso ratio looks like pubescent proportions, but she is so not...

blame it on the scanner! ^^ Thanks for the input though. I think... now that you mention it.... her arm is a little too skinny.

So I don't know if you remember, but I'm studying art at SAIC, not promoting or anything, but I'm in this research class and they make us to the things we never thought we'd do.... so this is my latest piece that I did specifically for that class. I don't think we are required to title it, but I'm pretty serious about this.... well... serious enough to title it.
I'm thinking of printing it in... at least 36x60"
Pretty artsy, eh?

Heh heh.... yeah... I guess I always thought there's the easiest way to animate, but it seems like there's a lot of ways to do it. I still think there's an easier way. I used illustrator and final cut pro to make this. I drew a bunch... and I mean a bunch of drawings on Illustrator and then I used Final Cut Pro to edit and time it.

Ander
December 29th, 2011, 07:31 am
you think so? Well... I do wish I can do more animation. (but it's just so time consuming!:ranting:)
But I will try to do more animation. I just gotta figure out when and what I'm gonna be working on next.
Meanwhile I drew this....
It's one of my character with shorter hair. I didn't really think I was gonna draw this, but after I drew the eyes... I was like, 'hey, that's not bad'. And then I drew her nose, her mouth, her cheeks, her chin and her ear... and I was like, 'hey... that's pretty good'. Then I drew her hair, and thought, 'Oh boy.... I guess I gotta draw her shoulders'.... and that's when it got complicated, but I think she turned out quite okay.
I think I'm just rambling now. ^^ I hope you'll like her. She's got an expression on her face that I can only describe it with the word "jaded".... or just "serious"? I'm not sure. Maybe "unsatisfied"?

I had this image of a photo booth picture in my head and how it captures the moment of friendship. I recently had a photo booth experience, but this drawing was prior to that incident. Nevertheless I wanted to share this.
I believe there's always at least one who doesn't really smile or feel a little shy about it. ^^
It wasn't easy drawing more than one character in a picture, but I think this one turned out so much better than I expected. Of course photoshop helped a lot, but I tried to minimize the photoshop effect.
Hope you'll like it.

^^ thanks animefans. I originally just drew the character in the middle. then I drew the guy to the left. then the girl to the left because i knew i would smudge the paper if i had drawn anything to the right... so I left that space open for the end. okay so, i drew the girl to the bottom right... and then the girl on the top. The thing I was most concerned about was the depth. I was hoping that there would be some sense of depth in my drawing, because i don't usually shade, you see. But yeah... it took me about 3 days to finish this. maybe total of 6-7 hours.

This is my pirate captain character named, Deci. I'm thinking going with Captain Deci Mack.... short for Captain Deci Mackenzie. MUhahahaha. ^^ I had to add that laugh. I think it'll be funny if she laughs like that. Well.. not in this picture, but when she's less stressed out.

Honestly... I think I'm getting better at shading. I mean... I still don't really do it, but I'm slowly using it... little by little, to show some volume...
I'm glad you noticed the earring. I wasn't quite sure if people would notice it. Lately the ears are giving me some trouble, so I'm happy how this turned out. I'm having a little trouble finding the right spot for the ear... especially at a 45 degree angle and such.

Thanks for the comments. I think I'll leave animation for awhile.
I've done some coloring. I'm experimenting with how to color my animation. My guess is that easier it is to color... quicker I can make things happen.

D'awww thanks animefans12. you looks so cute with your pink hoodie.
With that said. I have another drawing. I'm on the coloring rampage and this one I think came out pretty good. I wanted to give a strong feeling with this drawing. A sense of justice. I want to make her look like she is very strong willed and possesses experience as well as wisdom. So if this is what you got out of the drawing along with "oh she's pretty" then I think I'll be happy with it. Thanks
FYI She fights like Sakura from Naruto. Massive punch. I named her Mura, the youngest of the Three Sisters.;)

This is Sara. She is one of my favorite characters to draw.
This is when I started taking a Life Drawing class, which was back in 2010.
So I scanned the image and brought the image up in illustrator (because I always wanted to color this drawing). live traced it. paint bucketed it. brought it back up in photoshop. used brush to color and got this.B)
I want to animate this, too.XD
I hope everyone enjoys this drawing. Hope you really really lime it. :D thank you everyone.
Nyu001
June 10th, 2012, 04:39 am
I would say the live trace seem a bit lazy, but I like that style of tracing, which shares some similarity with the one used in the illustrations of Wind Waker.
The lime color, I am not being a fan of it. It is making duller the character's colors and is too distracting to me. It is like is stealing the attention that should not steal. A soft green color would make me want to look at your cool girl for a while, and it would help to give a better view that the background is actually behind and not fighting in the foreground. I do like the drawing, though!
Ander
June 10th, 2012, 03:25 pm
Yeah... I'm trying to figure how i can render it through. I'm glad you at least partly liked it.
The lime color was to pop the whole frame because essentially I didn't have anything in the back. i thought might as well just put something bright and poppy.
It's.... a lazy way i know. Now that I think about it...
I must say i got all the fun out the wacom tablet before i had to return it to school. bummer, right.
And you know what's even worse? I forgot to return it one time and it cost me 24 dollars. and that was because it was exactly 24 hours late. i had to ask a security guard for a dollar because when I called to ask how much the fine is... and they said it is 23 dollars. and when i got there... taking my sweet as time. and then they said it is 24 dollars.
But i brought exactly 23 dollars with me.
funnier thing is. It was like 23. something dollars and i think i was like a nickel short or something, and they don't accept cash. that's fine. i went to the machine and put the cash into the school id. but wait... the machine doesn't accept coin. So i had the money to pay, but didn't have the tools. the girl who's been helping me was just watching. didn't seem like she would loan me a dollar. She only had the nickel which I had already borrowed.
So that's why i had to ask the front desk security lady for a dollar. stupid wacom.
But i gave a starburst i had in my pocket. that was random too.

This one is about a year old I suppose.... but it got to be featured in one of the groups in deviantart.XD
It's not perfect, but that's generally the color I want to have for this character. She's a spell caster so I think purple (which is known to be the color of wisdom) fits her quite nicely. I think I've put this drawing before, only it wasn't colored.
I know the coloring can be done better, but I'm not going to recolor this, so don't bother telling me to "clean it up a little more".:nono:

April 12th, 2013, 01:10 am
Thanks animeart. I've been having some fun (yet frustrating) times drawing hair. I think the hardest part of hair is the consistency of the volume. But once you know how and what the hair would look like... it's really fun to let your hands travel along the hair. What also helps is the shape of the characters head. the darker (shaded) part of the hair is where it is closer to the scalp (generally speaking). That's as far as I have realized.
I really like this new one. I'm studying how to draw lips and mouth, sometimes teeth.

I see. I can't tell you how much i appreciate your criticism. I do feel like my pencil drawings have gotten better. As far as the color goes... I'm trying to figure out how I will color my animation.
I figured... it should be easy, but more importantly I'm hoping to find out which way is the quickest way to color. I've been trying to figure that out but it's taking some time. Hopefully I can go back to school and take some serious animation class.

So I redrew valasha.
Strangely I didn't really change the hair while I was redrawing. Instead I only changed her face.
What I found was that even though the hair style is the same... the motion and the feeling of the drawings and the attitude of the character changes.
It's either that or I'm doing something seriously wrong.

Olderst sister of the three. Samera.
She's the wisest of the three. She's is a bit shallow, but no one's perfect. Speaking of which, she's an angel. Her fighting style is that of TaeKwondo. HIYA!

I've been going back to my previous drawings and been coloring them in.
To say something about this character:
Her name is Venene. Pronounced Serene. Just like her venom.

You know, I always considered art to be a form of attacking the audience. Like, "Here. Look. I am attacking your belief with my art." Then lately I realize that's not always the case. Part of me believe it's because all artists have the need to defend their art, and what's a better way to defend than to attack first.
You see, I've been stuck on this mind set of "I won't let you deny my skill".
And I must admit, it was not the easiest thing to admit. KabOOYA! :D
Anywho.
I feel better. Especially with my drawings. I feel like I am developing my own style.
Now this drawing took some time. No longer than 3 days though. As to why I drew a waitress is beyond me. I didn't even go to any restaurants lately. But they deserve more credit. Even more so than my skill. ;)
hope y'all like it.

Hi everyone. This is my new drawing. I tried really hard to portray depth within this piece. It's a story of an overprotective father and a mischievous daughter. There's a handful of hints regarding differences between this two characters. For example, there is a sense of young and old, rugged and soft, and even seriousness and playfulness. Try to see if you can see more. :)
Again thank you guys and hope you'll enjoy it.

Hi guys. I got a new drawing. I've been working on my colors and lights, as you may have noticed.
So.
This new drawing is a portrait of a girl. A French girl to be precise.
I guess my reference to the French girl was, well, Belle from The Beauty and the Beast. I suppose this would be my version of her.
For those of you wondering, the girl is about to take a bath.
I hope you guys like it and thank you for checking out the drawing.
