Hey all. Now, I know we all buy stuff at an impulse or through various research in buying that one item in the store or online. So, I'm curious as in what members here buy themselves everyday or mostly everyday. Food doesn't count because.....well, it's common sense. :heh: So share what you have purchased recently and if you like, why. Are you happy with it or having buyer's remorse? I'll start us off.

I recently bought another DSLR. A Nikon D3100. :shifty: Well, after I bought it, I had major buyer's remorse and almost listed my old SLR on eBay, but after calming down a bit and buying a new camera bag, tripod, and lenses, I'm now happy I got it. :heh: That is, until I found out Nikon just released their new D5100. Eh, doesn't matter much since it doesn't have much differences with mine so I'm happy because it can shoot 1080p HD videos. :D

I LOVE this pedal. Just got it in the mail today and already spent about four hours messing with the settings. Can't wait till I get home from work to wake up all my neighbors. XD

My PSU had a heart attack, I got a new one yesterday. Tomorrow probably I will be buying a Hard Drive to dump a pool of sounds. I am low on money so I will be getting the Western Digital WD1002FAEX Caviar Black Hard Drive - 1TB, 7200RPM, 64MB, SATA 6Gbs. I wish I could afford many SSD!

Actually, the CMOS chip in the D5100 is "supposed" to be better, as the D3100 tends to have a blurry capture and post processed dot-pinch, resulting in really bad micro-quality when compared to the equivalent Pentax, Canon, and Sony models, although you do get the nicer lenses with Nikon.

xpeed
April 6th, 2011, 10:35 pm
^ yup, like I said, minimal differences, not much that I care that is since i don't take a lot of micro shots. I'm starting on a business in photography shooting such as engagements and outside family portraits. :D If my friend wants to buy my D3000 I'll probably go ahead and get the D7000 as well.

I'm waiting on my shipment on items I bought on eBay: a new Nikkor 28-85mm lens, Nikon camera bag, and Nikon tripod.

Now I just need a 50mm 1.8/4.5f lens, and a 105mm lens and I'm set.

@ Nyuu. Nice. Those are great HDs but I wouldn't get the SATA6 one if you don't have a motherboard that supports SATA 6s. I'm also at that WD 1TB SATA 6 HD too. My SSD is basically my backup and emergency-rushing drive since it boots up less than 40 seconds for me, and another 10 seconds to be on the internet to search for something in a hurry. LOL

Do you honestly believe that people give a rats ass about what you think about Apple in a thread on people's recent purchases? Somebody's family is gay because they bought a Macbook? Seriously, wtf? Go beat on a pillow and rate youtube videos down with a vengeful wrath instead.

Y' know... As an admin, I would hope that you'd be one of the people trying to set an example for how to treat other forum members. :\

It's okay to have an opinion, heck everyone does, but it's really not okay to express it in a way that personally attacks or insults other members. When you do that, you're not just being a bully, but more than that, you're setting a bad example for regular members. I'm not singling you out, or ganging up on you, as I don't agree with some of the words Zero chose towards you either, but it seems you are the one who started the fight, not him, so what I hope is that you'll both just stop it now. Especially before other members come in and get involved in the fight.

If you're not really looking into getting the hand gun for self defense, I'd seriously consider buying a .22 caliber pistol. While I realize that's probably the least manly advice to give, as far as target shooting goes you'll save A LOT of money buying .22 rounds versus 9mm or .45 rounds. Also take into account that the fundamentals of shooting a hand gun don't change between weapons. Besides, if you're ever itching to shoot a more heavy gun, I'm sure you have (or will find) a friend who owns one and who won't mind letting you practice with it.

Yeah, have you ever shot a gun before? It's ridiculously fun, hahah. It satisfies a very basic instinct of wanting to break things. Very good stress relief. =D
I mean, I've only shot at ranges, but even so, I couldn't help but be charmed by the ridiculous death-spewing machines I was wielding. When you pick up a good knife, you're like "whoa, this is SO SHARP!" When you shoot a gun, you're like "WHOA IT'S SO LOUD! XD" I'd give it a go if I were you. Everyone I've shot with grows an evil grin on their face after the first shot, even if they were reluctant to go at first. =)

And Whip's right about ammo. .22 rounds are stupidly cheap. And most places will let you rent bigger guns, anyway. Which you'll want to do. Having a magnum almost jump out of your hand and into your face is an awesomely scary and fun experience, hahah!

Actually, I do have a friend that is into guns. He has a AR-15 rifle he recently built, of course semi-automatic. Fully auto is illegal of course. :heh:

Yeah, I actually want to try shooting a desert eagle. Heard the recoil is a beast but so is the sound. haha. My friend said one time when he was at a range, some guy came in with a .50 cal. Barret Sniper Rifle. He said the shockwave is so intense he felt it 10 lanes down. :\

@Zero: I never mentioned PC's now did I? Apple products in general are too expensive design items that are normally popular amongst women and gay dudes. Not that I have anything against women or gay dudes.

@Hopeless: I shot an air rifle once or twice but that's about it. Weapon laws are very strict here (though somehow we've been having shootings every day of the week for the past week, even near where I live)

@Xpeed: Actually, to be honest, in the past I've thought about joining a shooting range... club thing for a while but I never got it over with and then forgot they exists.

IT was meant to be a joke. But for most people, they don't look back at college because their life turns out better in the future. I think when you look back to the past and think those were the best years, it means you really haven't done much for your future.

^ hey, I have that guitar at home. It's a pretty decent guitar for its price. Just change your strings to either higher or deeper tone and you're gold.

Ooh, nice tip! I'll remember to get ones with a deeper tone when I buy the guitar, thanks =)

I like to be extra cozy and warm. Also, my fiance is always really, really hot so he keeps the fan on high AND we have a stand up fan so I get freezing!

I don't mind sharing! The dress is from Forever 21- $12.50. The necklace is also from Forever 21- $4.00. The cardigan is from Old Navy and I don't remember how much it was but I know I didn't pay over $10.00 for it. The wedges are also from Old Navy and they were $20.00.

^It's not bad at all. The touch screen is nice change of pace and I love how it's so easy to listen to songs. The only thing I have that's a problem with this is the freakin' battery life. Maybe it's just me using the pedometer on the iPod, but it sucked 50% of the battery life in less than half the day.

Other than that, I love it and you should definately get it for music, radio, and if you want a small iPod. Though my best bet is that since it's 155 bucks now, just save another 50 bucks and get yourself an iPod Touch. :P

I would have to agree with this. I don't know how people can manage to have an iPod with such little space... however, if you say that it can receive [internet] radio (?) then even I'm interested in this. My iPod is an old beast; the first gen 30 gb iPod video. I've been meaning to upgrade to accommodate more size. I know this isn't much of a "recommend" thread, however, how is the picking up of internet radio (or "podcasts?") on new just plain old iPods. I say "plain old" because I honestly wouldn't want to have an iPod Touch or something which isn't for the primary use of music. xD

Heh, I kind of like both...I think location is more important to me than anything, though. My friend's family owns a beach house...it's tiny, but the area is beautiful. I think I'd rather live in a place like that than in a big "luxary" house in the noisy suburbs, surrounded by rich assholes and their obnoxious kids...

I would love to design my own house, but there is so much that goes into a house other then day dreaming, realistically speaking. It's like saying if I had all the time and money to design and sew my own clothes, I would... Yeah, no, I would be wearing crap.

And the difference is the weight of the design and designer. Many if not most people don't really care about what historical style their house falls into and why that is significant though, so it doesn't really matter I guess, I was just speaking out loud for no reason. I would just like a house that more of a history and a bit more to say for itself other then the fact that it's functioning as a place where I eat and have sex.

Anyway, I'm excited. Everyone there is ridiculously friendly and helpful. I'm going to learn really fast I think. And I can already tell judo is going to be ridiculously good for my physique. My whole body hurts like a bastard after every class, hahah. You really use all of your muscles while you're sparring.

Gonna practice dive rolls and front tucks sometime this week too. Front tucks aren't part of the training, but I figure I might as well, since they have the mats for it...

^Ah... Haven't seen those games and the gaming console in quite a while when I was young. Good to know that they're still having some popularity. :3

Judo sounds like a lot of fun for you! Nice to take some self-defense class so you won't be helpless when a serious situation arises. When I use to take Ta Kwon Do, people were especially rough during the sparring and apparently had lots of injured students. :/ And for Karate... It's just not too serious. The only time I enjoyed was the sparring days when we get to beat up others. There are some students who are a little too... fragile, but others are just ready to murder someone with just their aura. But what's up with the "no punching face" rule? I got punched in the face multiple of times by my rival and yet when she angered me and I gave her the same treatment only one time (she made my little sister cry), I was made to do 50 push-ups. -.-"

Oh well... I'm currently studying Mixed Martial Arts on my own anyway. Would love to test my new skills on somebody though...

Traditional martial arts with long history such as Karate, Tae-Kwon-Do, and Aikido have been shown to be useless in real-life situations.
Anybody with a few years practice in any of those (maybe barring Aikido, lol) would put you on your ass without breaking a sweat. My coworker boxed for about a year, and I couldn't even hit his face once in more than an hour of sparring. A girl in my judo class put me down repeatedly with barely any effort despite me having an almost seventy pound weight advantage on her and about five inches of height. If people fall apart during real life attacks, that's because of their lack of nerves, not because of faulty fighting systems. All of these martial arts have been around so long BECAUSE they've been proven effective. Besides that, Krav Maga is basically just boxing mixed with a few throws and submission techniques, with a bit of "how to dodge a knife!" thrown in for good measure. An "okay at everything, great at nothing" martial art. =P

Go spar at a few different gyms before deciding what works and what doesn't. I think you'll find that almost any martial artist will be more than a match for you! ;)
Personally, I'm cross-training in wrestling, boxing, and judo now. I'll gladly fight any Krav Maga practitioner when decent in all of them, hahah. Break his nose with boxing. Throw him on his head with judo. Then, if he's still got some fight in him despite being blinded by his shattered nose and almost completely paralyzed because of his broken neck, make him submit on the ground with wrestling. XD

Then again, it's best not to fight at all. A lot of people fight mostly just to improve their mental and physical health. If it helps us kick some scumbag's ass down the road, then all the better. =)

Yeah, I took Kempo Karate for a few years when I was a kid. Think I got to...blue belt? Whatever belt I ended up at, they told me I couldn't get any higher without sparring, and that to spar, I needed to be like three years older. So I ended up quitting. It was pretty fun, though. I agree that karate's lack of face punching during sparring is a little silly. One of the main reasons I don't plan on taking it again, at least in the immediate future. I don't know much about Tae Kwan Do, but I've been wanting to get into Muay Thai, so that'd probably be next for me, lol. Pushups suck!

And like Luis said, I don't know how much martial arts training you can really do alone. I was trying to practice judo and boxing for awhile just from youtube videos, but as soon as I started sparring with people who actually knew what they were doing, they told me how completely wrong I was doing everything...plus, like you said, you need to be able to test out your new skills to know whether or not they actually work, heheh.

Traditional martial arts with long history such as Karate, Tae-Kwon-Do, and Aikido have been shown to be useless in real-life situations.

That's laymen speak, based on opinion and not grounded in reality or research. That's on the same level as saying religions have been around so long because they've been proven to be correct. And I know you're smarter than that. Usually.

Herp a derp. Stop talking to yourself out loud, Zero. People are going to think you're crazy.

Also:

During World War I these bayonet techniques were supplemented with unarmed combat techniques, which often proved useful in trench warfare. Between the world wars, Colonel Anthony J. Biddle began the creation of standardized bayonet and close combat techniques based on boxing, wrestling, and fencing. Also during this period, Captains Wallace M. Greene and Samuel B. Griffith learned martial arts techniques from Chinese American Marines and brought this knowledge to other Marines throughout the Marine Corps.

In 1956, at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, Lieutenant Colonel Ralph Hayward (captain of the judo team at MCRD) made Gunnery Sergeant Bill Miller the new Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of Hand-To-Hand Combat. Miller was ordered to develop a new curriculum that a 110- or a 210-pound Marine could use to quickly kill the enemy. Miller created the program from various martial arts styles such as Okinawan karate, judo, and jujutsu. Every Marine recruit that went through MCRD was instructed in Miller's Combat Curriculum. This also included Special Operations Forces from all branches of the military and civilian entities. Later in 2001, retired Gunnery Sergeant Bill Miller was awarded the Black Belt Emeritus "for pioneering Martial Arts in the United States Marine Corps.
Hmmmm...I'm not completely sure, but last I checked, the Marine Corps were pretty highly regarded fighters. Probably more famous than the Isreali troops, actually...
But I'm done with this discussion. Arguing with an armchair martial artist (or an armchair-anything else) is a complete waste of time. There's no completely sure way to see who'd win in a fight besides having the two people in question duke it out, hahah. =)

And really Zero, the outcome of a fight has a lot to do with the fighter, not the art itself. The top comment of this video sums up this point nicely, I think:

And sorry for being off-topic, guys. This is my last post in this thread about this subject, promise. :heh:

Huh? We were arguing?

I don't put truth values on anything I say. I assign utility values: Language is a way for me to transmit energy and direct attention.

By the way, I don't believe in anything I just said.

Now I need to buy some decent gloves, and a Giro helmet....*sigh* another money-zapping hobby.

Oh, I'm also contemplating whether I should buy a new sunglasses since the frame on my old one snapped. =(

Quite true. Though right now in my situation, I'm not doing much martial arts anymore thanks to school being in the way of my life once again a month ago. Pretty much have give up hope with studying martial arts. >_> I really wanted to take another martial art class just one more time with my instructor since learning by yourself actually SUCKS. (As in nobody to teach you, learning by yourself with videos, and pretty much the point of what Luis has said.) Talk about having another one of my hobbies be thrown back into the closet (not to mention that my family is now broke. Can't afford the lessons on anything anymore). >.>

Back on the subject of the thread though, I'm planning to pre-ordering Fate/Extra Limited Edition for 39.99. Good deal since the PSP is going to be overtaken by the PSVita anyway. Well, the PSP had a good life for the most part at least. >.>
