Alas, I am but a newb, stumbled too late upon a really cool project. :( I would offer my assistance, but it looks like you guys have it all together, so I offer my congradulations instead.
Although, I did happen to see that your violinist says that they play "badly"... if you still happen to need help... well, violin is my major and stuff.

Is it too late for a humble Australian Clarinetist/Bass Clarinetist/Singer to join in the mix? I got 8 years experience on the clarinet if that helps...
EDIT: I'm a fast learner. I know a little basic guitar, and I'm ok at Tenor Sax, if needed :D plus piano and keyboard (please don't hit me, i'm not an over achiever :DD)

What's with all the late replies? Have in mind that Starwind arranged this for a very long time, and it takes up alot of concentration and time to make it good.
@Starwind: Just zip the .mus file. Most hosts accepts .zip files.

Just a note, guys, when you're doing your recordings, please make it easier for me by following this labelling system when saving your files for upload:
YourUsernameYourInstrumentSectionNumber
YourUsername - Your Forum username
YourInstrument - The instrument you play, and whether you're playing the first/second/third part, ie FirstViolin, SecondTrumpet etc.
SectionNumber - If you have a rest in your part that is more than TWO BARS LONG, please stop recording at this point and make a new recording for the next passage. So say you have a passage that you play, and then a three bar rest before you next play, please record the first passage and name that SectionOne, then record the passage after the rest as Section Two etc. It just makes it easier for me to assemble the piece, as some people have problems with timing when they're working without other instruments to lead the time, and so may come in too early or too late if just recording the piece straight off. If you only have one passage in the whole piece, that's fine, just name it SectionOne - it just allows all the files on my computer to order themselves nicely so I don't lose anybody's passages.
So when you save your recording, save it using the name style above (minus the color tags obviously) - so when you upload your piece for me to download for mixing, it'll be something like:
madmazda86FirstViolinSectionOne.mp3
Please upload as mp3 or wav only! Thankyou :D
NOTE: When I'm mixing the piece, I will select the BEST QUALITY recordings - this means the ones with minimum distortion/hiss/mistakes etc. This means your recording may not necessarily be used in the piece, but bear in mind that for every person who contributes a recording it gives me more instrumental samples to select from, and in this way you are helping the final effort! Full credit will be given to all musicians whose performances appear in the final recording :)

I have:
Mystery Editor's bass clarinet sections one and two
The full score of Manoshikan Mist for Finale
The percussion part of Mist for Noteworthy Composer
and am currently doing the bassoon part in Noteworthy as well (sorry for the delay, Sondagger). I'm happy to carry on transferring the rest of the parts into Noteworthy and posting them up in the form of .NWC files or screencaps, though this will take time. If Starwind comes up with an alternative means of getting the files to everyone it'd be a bit less time consuming ^_^

Can I make a small suggestion about amending the piano part a bit? When everything drops out and it's left along in somewhat of a the solo role, it seems to take a quite a few measures before the flute comes in, kind of breaking the moment of the piece. What I suggest is to either cut a few measures, or make it more lyrical by adding a bit of lead-in melody that floats smoothly into the flute (or you can just have the pianist be very expressive with the tempo).
Other than that, it looks pretty good to go. If you want, I can help to do the final mix, since I have a pretty good multi-track editor. I can make minor adjustments in tempo and pitch, filter out some noise, pan and give the instruments some realistic reverb. Also, if no one ends up taking the violin or piano part, I can try to play those, too (I don't have any decent recording gear now, though I plan to get a condenser mike next month or so). And if there are other parts that no one can/will play, I also have some pretty realistic software samples to suppliment the piece. What do you think?

I'm looking at the violin score right now; when the first solo comes in, and it says ad lib trills - does that imply that you can add your own trills wherever you want in that part, sorta in a cadenza-ish manner? Also, I noticed the double stop on 47 (I think, or 48) is impossible to play (A-flat and C) - unless you are implying the violin passages w/o the solo mark are actually supposed to be played by an ensemble of violins, or that alternative tunings were used (ie, all the strings tuned down a whole-tone, or just the d-string).

August 10th, 2005, 09:45 pm
Well, the clarinet part is combined... so i'd assume that its two instruments or more to play it.
In that case, it might be a good idea to have a couple of seperate recordings for those parts (preferrably with different players/instruments). Though mixing them together to create an ensemble effect might be kind of tricky, because of the overtone interactions (or lack of, in this case).
So anyways, how's the progress? Are there parts still needed to be filled, or everything is taken, but not all the recordings are done?
Starwind

Well I know there were more than one violinists working on the project, so I figured that you would just be splitting the part when you get to "D". And as far as the solos, yes, i just meant you could through in any extra little trills or runs or other little tricks to add a little flare. But also, i think It would be a good idea to talk to the other violinists about who will be playing the solos.
I know that Maz will be playing the violin part as well so maybe contact her. And since there are two solos, you can maybe each do one. You can figure something out. And note that ad libbing trills etc. also applies to the second solo too ^.^;
Edit: And no, parts aren't filled, So if you think you're too late your not. Parts were filled when this project was started, but that was so long ago most have forgetten about it.

just as a reminder, since your having winds and drums, one wind can play signifigantly louder than a few violinists put together so unless your having a dj or someone who understands how to do that kinda thing put together the music files, the winds need to be recorded a bit softer than the strings or else it would be unbalanced

from what i saw of the score, there didn't seem to be any parts for vocals. I don't know if I just missed them somehow, but does anyone have any thoughts for four part harmony or solos? Lyrics too?

Well I know there were more than one violinists working on the project, so I figured that you would just be splitting the part when you get to "D". And as far as the solos, yes, i just meant you could through in any extra little trills or runs or other little tricks to add a little flare. But also, i think It would be a good idea to talk to the other violinists about who will be playing the solos.
I know that Maz will be playing the violin part as well so maybe contact her. And since there are two solos, you can maybe each do one. You can figure something out. And note that ad libbing trills etc. also applies to the second solo too ^.^;

The alternating solo is a pretty good idea, though I don't know when I can contact Maz, seeing how she'll be gone for a while. And is she the only one who has all of the recordings so far? I wonder how well they are synced together - as long as the relative tempo between the notes are pretty close, it shouldn't be hard to sync, though - how is everyone working on that, by the way?
Anyways, here are some tips for recording for those who are interest:
-It's probably not a bad idea to play along with the MIDI with headphones on while recording - just make sure that you are specifying that you are recording from the microphone!
-Also, if it's too difficult to do in one run, don't hesistate to do it by parts, as long as they are temporally consistent (actually, since there might be humanized playing for the solos, the parts might have to be split up anyways).
-When you record, try to do so at the highest bit-rate (kps) and sampling rate (hz) at the highest resolution possible (16-bit at least, 24-bit preffered, 32-bit might be too large space-wise). Try to save in a lossless compression (ie, .au, maybe .snd, not microsoft .wav or .mp3) if possible, too. It's also preferrable to record in mono, since in the end the tracks are all probably going to be converted into mono and manually panned, and stereo tracks take up more space.
I just bought a decent dynamic mike, so I could try to record the violin or piano part now. If I get a good recording, I'll send it to you soon.

Gaah! I can't view any of these things at all. Perhaps it would be best for me to pull out altogether, since there are two violin solos and I seem to be a tad superfluous anyway.
Edit: Nevermind... I got it to where I can see it now. Not too hard... I was worried for a minute about the mention of trills and vibrato. Does this song even really need trills? *goes to try and wrestle the midi into compliance*
I actually don't have a microphone... I have something where I record myself onto a tape, record that onto the computer and upload it to this site. While that might provide alright sound quality, depending on the tape/recorder used, I do not have the option of saving the file as other than .wav / .mp3 I'm afraid.
Edit 2: Um... could someone give me a tempo marking? I can't hear the MIDI. When I try to play it, no matter how or in what player, all I can here is a few little staticky noises... I've tried the one that Mystery Editor put up too.

Sorry about the static... I don't actually have a microphone for my computer; I have to use my two dollar tape recorder, play the tape through a recording device and save it to the computer for it to work. :\ Which bugs me... but it's all I can do.
I did not use a metronome, but I'm good at counting; I'm not allowed to get lost in my orchestra, because I'm the leader. So I can stay on time really well. ^_^

You have to have a microphone or a tape recorder + the software that I have, which does cost money. If you have one of those, then you should be able to join in. We definitely need bassoon, and probably another violinist too.

Starwind
November 18th, 2005, 01:40 am
Oh, sorry, I meant page 19.

It's probably too late for this, but I play tuba... unfortunately that's all since I got my braces on... If there's any bass-ish part you have, I can read it, since I do treble clef as well. Edit: I just found the Bassoon part, which I can read... This song looks as easy as pie... but the question is, how fast does it go?
