It doesn't matter who you were talking to - this is a forum. You know, open board? It's public so I have a right to respond :bleh:

So certain people are acting like others in the IRC? If you think this is happening, try to contact a mod about it. We gots ban powers.

There's also the cool yellow square that appears in front of somebody's name if they are who they say they are. So if somebody you know usually has the cool yellow square (well, it's more of a rectangle really) but suddenly doesn't even though the name is the same, think twice! Er... I don't know much about IRC really, lol.

For everyone's information, this is a problem already known by IRC Operators. We've been looking into nickserv and chanserv modules (I know I've talked to Gand about it a couple of occasions) for the room.

Problem is, if Jaso signs into IRC with his name, he'll get voiced (the yellow square/+). If he then changes his name to Para,the voice remains active even if he isn't Para. So he'll have the name, the yellow square, but is NOT para. THAT is the problem I think.

Changing names is half the fun as Nekokun Hakoden and Firebird should know. but yeah, stop using other members names.

That is true, but not really prevailing as not many people would go to that length to impersonate?
Do you think you could have a private IRC page with preset usernames, that you can only get on using a certain name with a password?
That's nickserv and chanserv. If someone joins and are using your name, you can only join after logging in with nickserv. Not much different from signing into the forums.

Maybe Gand can make the script that compares your login to your IP on the forums so that it also looks at the name you are logged in with on the forums. I don't like nickserv, it's annoying.

That's actually how it's currently being invoked for voicing. Building on the idea, though, he might be able to do a consistency check with the bot every n minutes to verify the person's name is still the one they logged in with.
I like nickserv because it grants the user the right to kick off their lagouts with the ghost command...

I could make it recheck anytime someone changes names if people keep abusing it. I've found the few times it's happened it's been someone who signs in as the person.
Honestly I don't think it's that big of a deal, and nickserv is too confusing for most people. Prod a mod if someone's posing on there. They'll be banned quickly.

I did it once, as everyone else was doing it - and I immediately told them it was me and it was abvious it was me all along (except for DS (?)).
I wasn't sneaky or maliscious (or however you spel it)
And this is why I have yet to take any action on this. If you give me the dialog used, then I'll be happy to deem it a okay or banishè.

I think I was online at the time. Everyone was changing names to do things such as spell words in the user list and then a few of us changed name to the other online members. Long story short; no harm was done unless these are dirrerent occasions.

As it stands, you have to already be logged into the forums to get any action from the script. So if your IP is dynamic or static, it should not matter, as your IP is logged as soon as you hit the forum.

I must be special. I use mIRC and always log into chat first, then the forums. Must be because i mainy login from home.

You guys should stop guessing and read the chat faq :P
When someone enters the chat room, Ichibot checks the nick and IP against the forum database. If the joining person is either logged in or has posted from the IP, they will recieve a @ or + symbol in front of their name.
So if someone has posted from that IP then they don't need to be logged in

I just tried it again, and it seemed just fine, with a total of 1.97 second lag (which is higher than the usual 5 second lag). It is, more than likely, your own internet connection.

why is it that a have to turn on Dail up in order to use the IRC? it wont wont connect with Satellite... which is kinda pesty, becuase dail up is s-l-o-wwww

Perhaps a flood autoban can be set on the ichibot so that if one spams 12 messages over a span of 3 seconds (for example), ichibot sets a ban automatically (over a time duration or not is debatable).
Now the question is: will ichibot be programmed?

Ichibot is open to code, but it needs to be in PHP. I'm currently learning it --- thus, the antispam, and other modal solutions, is on its way.
And I only said that I want to ban the 4 series because I have repetitively found that the most annoying personas exist there.

1) Not many people use the chat.
2) Most of the people are lurkers so wont speak for days at a time
3) Look at the time of day. It's after lunch for UK and early morning for America.

Blitzwing brought up some interesting log program today in IRC and I thought, "Hey, why not do that on all of my logs?" thus, I did (using pisg). Here are the results of all 26 megs of chatlogs, roughly 535759 lines of chat, and roughly 283 days worth of content:

Not really channels, but moreso different IRC servers: Freenode (programming related) and Rizon (anime related). Ichigos only has 1 channel that is active, #Ichigos.

Is there really a reason to keep it open when it's consistently dead like this? I for one, have always liked IRC. This is why I've always offered my support for that section of the forums, even when I determined I couldn't handle both the forum and IRC about a year ago, I chose to oversee IRC instead of the forums. The problem is that I can no longer justify to the rest of the staff keeping it running. Even if we added more to the Ichigos staff, it wouldn't help, as I've done this in private with several choice people, and there were only 11 cases out of the 1022 when they actually acted with this responsibility addendum.
Rather than managing an open / live chat system which has always had mixed feelings from the community, we decided that reviving old niches that Ichigos used to have, and allocating the staff appropriately. With that reallocation, and under the above consideration, IRC is a resource hog to this community. It is better to focus everyone onto one feature of the community rather than divert its focus.
In retrospect, IRC was originally implemented as a way to relieve sever stress from the abnormally hight activity in the General Chat thread. The staff here implemented the final part of the plan about six months ago and completely rid ichigos from the thread and switched rapid communication to IRC. As everyone here is aware, this plan failed and caused the community to stagnate. Given our current activity, IRC lost its raison d'être.

But M, you see the problem with IRC is that its always active so people go on and off whenever. Out of the lets say 6 times I've been on IRC only once have people been active and talking.
If you really wanted to make IRC work I would suggest times and topics. So make a thread for example notifying other users that the IRC has a "meeting" planned for ((date/time)) and the topic will be ((topic)).
This way people will know that other users will be on and talking about something, rather than saying join in whenever. It will just work better, in my opinion.

I used to be in the skype room all the time because that's what I mainly used to chat. Now I use msn as my main tool, resulting in my not logging on skype at all anymore.

I wanna get rid of IRC. Why have the same thing (a randomness chatbox) twice?
It was actually one of my conditions to get General Chat back. If IRC isn't going to go, I'll close down GC again. It's that simple.

Just my two cents, but IRC has no place at Ichigos if it's going to be a choice between that and GC. Many members discussed that there is a loss of interconnectivity amongst each other, and it's obvious that GC helps harbor just that.
With GC, topics are at least slightly less random, and posts are achieved for everyone to see without having to keep something open 24/7 [like IRC]. It's also very difficult to even find someone to talk on IRC, because people are all over the world in different situations so conversations are next to never unless explicitly planned out. If there is still a question on what to keep and what to get rid of, I think the answer is obvious.

IRC is mostly just a method to communicate outside the forums, in real-time, if people so desire. I don't see it as redundant.

Perhaps as backup if the forums go down. I know it happened a few times before.
Besides, I doubt IRC will draw that much activity away from GC.

IRC won't detract from the forums or GC, it's just another medium. Technically, chat is for the site anyway, not the forums. Besdies, only a small handful of people use it. so I really don't think it's going to affect the forums in any way.

It's not about IRC drawing people from GC, I just consider them both the same thing (chatbox for random bullshit). But that's just my opinion, and I guess I'm alone on this one.

I have a suggestion, though.
Perhaps you should organize some sub-topics according to instrument(or instrument group), to have people talk about the certain instrument or request music for that instrument on that section. :)

IRC hates me, I just know it does :(
And yes, that's my IP address but it always seems to happen lately that my first attempt to join fails and the thing automatically defaults to my second username.
