There has been a recent interest in an Ichigo's Chat, so it was suggested to me to run an IRC server. For anyone who doesn't know, IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is a way to easily talk with multiple people in a chat room. It's like a giant group chat in MSN, except without MSN! It's a great way to relax or kill time while at work.

Please leave comments, suggestions, etc in this thread if you have any suggestions. We are just beta-testing this, so it seems to be killing the forums then we'll shut it down. I'll be idling almost all the time, so feel free to poke me if I'm around! I'm working on getting some simple services (such as !seen and !next), so stay tuned.

IRC doesn't really have emoticons. Maybe some clients do but not this webbased one.

Yes it does. Just go to options and change it so that : ) actually becomes smilies. You can change fonts and sounds in there too. Thats probably why my apostrophe's were coming out a bit funky.

I have another idea we could use instead of IRC, A chatbox. I saw one at a diffrent site and it was pritty cool. We could use one of those instead of IRC because it can go right on the fourm page...

Just go there, and wait a while for people to talk. After a while, a flooding of people will talk. BTW, if you dont know, you type at the bottom of the screen.

I don't like chatboxes, it makes the forums messy and ASF has one :P

And yep, you can turn on emoticons for cgi-irc in the options, I just have them off by default.

since some people are confused on IRC, here will be some commands that may help.
(NOTE - I am not good in explaining things so if you feel confused, please ask me.)

/me (put something here)

the /me is an action where it is used to express emotion or etc.
ex. (/me kills you. It will come out to (name) kills you. It can be used to express feelings or actions. So this could replace smileys in IRC.)

/nick (desiered name here)

the /nick is where you can change your nickname into another name if your name is already taken in IRC.

cgi-irc isn't really ment for slow connections... try using mIRC or another IRC client instead.

It loads fine for me on dial-up, a few seconds and the login appears

Anyway, the point of IRC isn't to just be able to hop on and chat. The idea is that you idle until a topic you wish to discuss comes up. Or maybe you start one. Whatever. But a lot of people don't understand this, goes on for 5 minutes, finds the channel dead, then leaves. Of course nothing will ever come up this way.

On another note, Gand, how come /ns doesn't work on your server?

Because its the middle of the night for a lot of people when I'm mostly on, I don't bother much, especially when like now I'm busy with school ^^ The times I pop on are AT school, and then I leave pretty hastily generally because the teacher's decided to come see what we're up to.. hopefully in the holidays it might pick up a little

Well... after a while I realized that it goes idle for about 4 days, and then a topic jumps up, then back to idle... It just seems kinda pointless to be on if you only get 1/96 hours of talk time.

Maybe if people don't quit within a minute of joining because nobody seems to be talking during that minute...

Upon typing /join [CHANNEL] you have made covenant with the server and agree to merge into the thread. The user that complies/joins a channel must remain inside the Channel until covenant is completed.

That law cannot be accepted because

1) Ircs are made for people to chat and go as they please.
2) No one has been prosecuted when they break that law. Then that means that the law doesnt count

wow... I can't connect with a 3mbps connection line without anything running in background or using the internet line for anything else.... I'm on the right port and everything was working fine last night. And I know the server is online because the CGI:IRC works.... Even tried it with and without any scripts.

With CGI IRC that can be possible, however with irc clients that cannot be done.

However, adding nickserv and the like would be a nice addition and possibly attract users so they can register and secure their nick.

I would use my own nickname but it wouldn't fit...it would just be Christoph instead of ChristopherArmalite

regardless of whether #trivia existed or not, I dont think many people would be really active in Ichigos all the time. I supply the trivia as well as leonheart, but we did not pursuade them to play it. If they don't want it, then they can tell me and I and Leonheart can disband the channel. However, dont say that it is unessecary just because it adds entertainment value and saying that it drags people away from #ichigos. The people on IRC know that chatting can be in #ichigos while playing trivia can be on #trivia, and I've seen people multi-task like that in IRC.

I don't mind Trivia, just make it stop taking my points when I'm not even using the !hint command... x_x

I assume people don't mind that I leave my IRC logged on all the time? I have a lappy that is always on, for MSN and IRC, and it only ever turns off when I'm travelling...

I didn't have any complaints when I left my client Idle for a month or so, and it's not like we are hitting a user limit anytime soon. I think it's safe to assume that it is fine.

Idling around is something else than having bots there. Nothing wrong with it.

Usually the IRC picks up at about 19:00-20:00 EST and says that way for two hours, then it dies.

Though the trivia channel appears to pull a lot of people away from the main channel.

No, but there used to be tabs above showing channels and nopw there isnt so I don't know ho to navigate. It tels you in the help channel but there isnt a buton for that either...

There's just a new enter page. Nothing's different in the IRC that I've seen. (Except a few minor differences, and I don't think even those make any sort of difference.)

Every now and then, I get an urge to do some programming, so I cooked up a bot last night that will do simple authentication against our forum database. It's far from perfect, but at least it will let people know who is a forum member. Here's how it works:

When someone joins the chat room, it does a lookup on their IP (this works for both CGI-IRC and normal clients) and checks it against the forum database. If it finds that the IP matches the username, then it will display a welcome message and add a + to the user. This + lets people know that they are really who they say they are. If the user is a mod or admin, it will add a @ and give them operator rights to the channel.

In addition, if someone logs in using a forum member's name and their IP doesn't match, Ichibot will let everyone know that this could be a spoof. However, since this bot is very beta, chances are that it's just broken (check the bugs list below). Once we get these things ironed out, we could even use it to boot out the imposters! :torch:

If the user is a guest (not using their forum name and not stealing someone else's), Ichibot won't do anything.

So basically anyone with a + or @ is an authenticated forum member. Anyone without these symbols might be a member.

Bugs:

Special characters in forum names might not register correctly in IRC. Possibly add a custom profile field in the user

Update: Ichibot will now check the IPs of currently logged in users. So if you log into the forums, then join chat, it will authenticate you without having to post first.

It seems like the bot is giving everyone voice through the CGI (Suntao being an example).

It didn't +v Gand w3rk. so it must me doing somthing correct. Altough it does need the upgrade to realise who is/isn't a member.

im having problems logging onto the irc server. i get on then get booted, this takes a while and while logged on i can not send message

Anyone here have Trillian? There's an IRC option on it, but I'm not sure which server to pick when it shows a list of like 200.

Um, you'd need to add a new server, Pantalaimon, lol. I use mIRC, not trillian, so can't tell you how to add it, but it's ichigos.com on port 6667 for me.

ok on trillian just create a new connection
and in the server
for the server alias put whatever like say "ichigos"
then underneath type ichigos.com::6667
then put in whatever name you wanna be called, user info...etc
then close it, so you've made a connection
then there should be a white tab...right click that and then there should be something you can select called "join a channel", just click that, type in #ichigos, there you go

OR! You could download mIRC (http://www.mirc.com/), XChat (http://www.silverex.org/), or hydraIRC (http://www.hydrairc.com/) for you external apps and use IRC like it was meant to be, much unlike how these multi-chat clients GAIM (which now crashes all the time with MSN Live) and Trillian (Dirt slow on a lot of machines).

We need a way to protect our names when we aren't on, there have been several incidents with someone who shall remain nameless posing as other people who shall also remain nameless.

Thats quite rare paradoox, and they would have to sign on with normal name first do it is easily detectable.
